Tom Thumb (Half Pint) pea, a heirloom from the 1800’s, of small stature but big heart as it sports full-size, delicious pea pods on small 20-30cm tall plants. Reportedly very cold-tolerant due to its small size, we’re growing it out to bulk up our seed stock this year. But it’s also very easy to protect from pests with a small hoop of netting. -

Drunken Woman is a big blousy lettuce with a light green heart and crinkled leaves, blushing to red at their tips, like flushed cheeks after a tipple? This one has always done well for us. Mass sowing continues. Some sweetcorn in (is it too early to sow this?) I re-sowed a couple of varieties of beetroot, as the last batch I sowed I left on the kitchen table and they, unsurprisingly, went leggy and failed. These are currently by the back door ready for putting in the greenhouse tomorrow. It’s definitely time to sow these directly, but between cats and children, my seedlings tend to get dug up before they get anywhere! 🫘 Heritage Seed Library 🫘 Last year I entered a competition on Insta and won a year’s membership to the Heritage Seed Library through Garden Organic. 🍅 I save a lot of my seeds especially from heritage Tomato plants like the Costoluto di Parma and Red Pear that are difficult to find seeds for. 🫘 Sometimes I end up with seeds because I miss picking some crops and they end up drying on the stalk. The amazing little House tomato, sown at the end of February, now potted on & is beginning to really get going! They’ll grow to about 12” tall & will be eventually potted into a 6” pot. We’d like to highlight the great work done by @holbrookscommunity, which has two sites - one at 115 Holbrook Lane & one at John Shelton Drive, both are just down the road from where we hold our annual seed swap at the main hall, St Giles Church every February. They support over 2000 local residents through a range of activities, this small charity offers social and financial advice, workshops, a library, and much, much more. It was great to meet Rachel, Janet, Graham, Ian, Mike & Dan in their small garden area, where they plan to develop & grow more food from Holbrook Lane this year to keep a recently acquired fridge full of fresh produce, making it available for the local community. We had a lovely time at the @theearlylearningcamp Pre-School, in Exhall, meeting all of the enthusiastic children who get to enjoy the amazing facilities there. As well as a fabulous outdoor ‘mud kitchen’, and meeting circle (with fire pit), the children have their ‘Mud & Bloom’ mini allotment - and it gave us great pleasure to hand over another 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 seed donation to help these keen growers get started this year! What seeds are you growing/saving? These are capsicum, Cape gooseberry(fermented and drying), Gila Indian Bean, Poatoes, Navajo Black Corn, Cherokee Cornplanter beans (only 2 of multiple varieties that make up this type, that we have harvested so far), Aunt Ruby's German Green tomato seeds (fermenting), and San Marzano tomato seeds (fermented and drying). *Did you know?* Fermenting tomatoes and cucurbit seeds, in particular, not only cleans them but helps them store and stay viable for longer? It only takes adding the seeds, water and a wee bit of juice from the fruit to a jar and leaving a day or two, until it smells fermenty, they rinsing in a tea strainer and drying. What seeds are you saving in your spiritual life? Are there things you know you shouldn't have in your collection? What are you growing, what is your tongue speaking, is it life and encouragement? I read something in the notes of my Bible I felt quite convicted by this morning in relation to Proverbs and all of the ones relating to raising a son(child). It was "In your upbringing which had the greater effect: punishment and discipline, or verbal instruction and encouragement?". To be quite honest, I don't have memories of verbal encouragement from within my family until I left home. So this is my conviction, to do better at encouragement for my own children, to tend and grow that seed.

We obtained 1 of my Father’s old cream cans this year & found it full of pumpkin seeds. These seeds are from when he farmed & are the traditional Qld Blue Pumpkin & have been stored in the cream can at least 30 years old. We have tried a variety of ways to germinate & have finally succeeded in the compost pile of all spots. Things I’ve done today and it’s not even noon yet. Some days are just this productive. Other days, not so much! Chilli jam, grated celery into the dehydrator, boys have played with play dough, bottled some kombucha for a second ferment and made some banana bread with a little help from the small ones. Just been to the corner shop cos Seeley insisted. It’s nice to have an extra day off work. Over time humans have eaten 6,000 plant species, we now mostly eat three: rice, wheat and maize which provide 50% of all calories . Thanks to the Heritage Seed library at @gardenorganicuk hundreds of species of vegetables are preserved and shared. . Loss of biodiversity includes loss of many cultivated species that developed over time, plus landraces which evolved to thrive in particular locations. Our globalised industrial farming system has changed all this ensuring many species have been lost and the same seeds are grown all over the World regardless of local conditions, and all relying on artificial pesticides and fertilisers. . We needs resilience in the face of climate change, we need diversity and happily there are people who worry about these things. The first of the donation packs under 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 2024 have been delivered to the wonderful volunteer gardening team at the Life Church Community Grocery Gardens. They all work hard to grow fresh produce for the Bedworth Community Grocery at The Harbour Centre, Bedworth CV12 8LY. My overwintering broad beans haven’t all survived the frosty conditions. I sowed some more today.
