Disheartening news on Split Oak Forest today. 😔 Despite widespread concerns and advocacy efforts, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) made a disappointing decision, putting Split Oak's delicate ecosystem at risk. The FWC voted to approve staff’s recommendation for a deal that would release a portion of the perpetual conservation easement that protects the Split Oak Forest Wildlife and Environmental Area. Thank you to every person and organization who worked hard to prevent FWC from paving the way for the toll road to move one step closer to construction. We will continue to advocate for the protection of Florida's conservation lands, for our wildlife and future generations. #SaveSplitOak #FloridaWildlifeFederation #FWF #KeepFLWild #WildFlorida #Conservation

Here are a few saltwater fish species native to Florida! 🐟 Hogfish (Lachnolaimus maximus): Hogfish are primarily found in coral reefs and rocky bottoms, where they can camouflage among the diverse substrate. Much like their nickname counterparts on land, hogfish have elongated snouts that earned them their namesake. This lengthy nose is specifically designed to help them forage for their favorite food; such as mollusks and crustaceans, and one of the best places to find them is buried in the sand at the seafloor. Common Snook (Centropomus undecimalis): Snook inhabit coastal and estuarine areas, having the ability to tolerate both fresh and saltwater mixtures. They rely on intercoastal areas for both foraging and breeding habitats, which makes them vulnerable to habitat degradation caused by urbanization, dredging, and habitat loss from coastal development. Red Drum (Sciaenops ocellatus): Red drum are large fish that inhabit estuarine and nearshore environments, and are recognizable by their red to bronze coloration across the dorsal of the body and at least one black spot located at the beginning of the tail fin. Similar to the Snook, they also are facing pressures from urbanization and exacerbated red tides. It's that time of the year! Myakka's adorable next generation of white-tailed deer are out and about, happily exploring their new home. And they're not always keeping up with mama... . Even in protected lands such as Myakka River State Park, roads and trails fragment wildlife habitats. Vehicular traffic can be extremely dangerous to them, and especially their young, who most definitely don't know to look both ways! . So while we should always be mindful of wildlife on or near the edges of roads, now more than ever, PLEASE SLOW DOWN for wildlife, in the park, and beyond! . And, when you spot wildlife crossing, please be sure EVERYONE has made it to the other side before continuing on your way. . Happy Wildlife Wednesday! . Let’s explore the natural communities along the Florida Trail in the Panhandle!🌾 The Florida Trail in Gulf Islands National Seashore offers some of the most spectacular views in all of Florida. With its turquoise waters and broad, sugar-sand beaches, the western Panhandle coast is famous for its exquisite beauty. @gulfislandsnps In addition to pristine beaches this region has beach dunes up to 30 feet tall. Sea oats and other native vegetation hold the dunes in place. An ever-changing back dune system of grassland, swale, and coastal scrub are so important to many species of plants, small mammals, and birds. Have you visited Gulf Islands National Seashore yet? It’s the best place along the Florida Trail to see coastal dunes and beaches! It's also the site of the Northern Terminus 😎 To take a closer look, check out our interactive map! (Link in bio)

Did you know that Florida burns more area with prescribed fire each year than any other region of North America? Today marks the start of National Wildfire Awareness Month. The risk of wildfires is expected to increase with climate change. However, a recent study conducted by @archboldstation, @floridaatlantic and numerous other partners highlights how the Florida Wildlife Corridor, if fully conserved, can help shape a more resilient future for our state, including its impact on fire management. To reduce the long-term fire risk to human development, fuel loads on conserved lands must be actively managed through prescribed burns. The more scattered new housing and infrastructure are, the more challenging it becomes to manage fire risk. Large blocks of connected conserved lands make prescribed burns and wildfire control easier. Learn more in the full study at the link in our bio. 📸: @alexofthewild #floridawildlifecorridor #KeepFLWild#climatechange #wildlife #biodiversity #environment #wildlifephotography#wilderness #forest #fire

“On Wednesdays we wear pink.”💖 Ever wondered how the Rosette Spoonbills get their fabulous pink coloring? 🎨 It's all about their diet! These vibrant pink birds indulge in a feast of crustaceans rich in carotenoids, found in shrimp and crabs.🦐 As they digest these carotenoids, their bodies metabolize and deposit them into their growing feathers, resulting in the stunning pink coloration. How cool is that? 📸 Roseate Spoonbill #FloridaWildlifeFederation #FWF #KeepFLWild #WildFlorida #FloridaWildlife

Ever felt a sudden chill in the air as you ventured down Ranch House Road? Or perhaps something invisible brushed against your cheek as you turned onto All Weather Road? You might have just stumbled upon one of Myakka River State Park's many ghosts! . Thanks to everyone who joined us on April 19th for our Experiencing Myakka's Magic: Full Moon Ghost Ride when our Executive Director Miri Hardy led a fun and thought provoking ride into Myakka's backcountry. And together, we learned more about about phantoms from Myakka River State Park's past that haunt the park to the day! . We appreciated the opportunity to discuss how these ghosts came to be, and which ones we might be able to exorcise. We left feeling inspired that together, there are indeed many ways in which we can help, rather than haunt, Myakka's delicate ecosystems! . Our new "Experiencing Myakka's Magic" will return in the Fall. It’s Sea Turtle nesting season here on the Atlantic Coast of South Florida — the time of year when mama turts come ashore to dig a nest and lay their eggs. 🐢 One morning while I was out on the beach shooting the sunrise, very much to my surprise, this Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta caretta) crawled out of the surf about 50 yards north of where I was standing. She proceeded to do what the experts call a “false crawl” — she did not dig a nest nor deposit any eggs; she just scoped out the beach, firmly decided “Not today!” and crawled back into the ocean. (See last image for false crawl pattern in the sand) Friendly reminder that sea turtles are federally protected and should be observed from a distance (binoculars and/or a zoom lens can help you to observe without disturbing the turtles). Protecting these creatures is a shared responsibility. A few ways humans can help are to properly dispose of debris on the beach, fill in any holes you dig on the beach, and reduce coastal light pollution. Swipe 👈 through to see more of this lady making her crawl on the beach and then back to sea. In the background of some images, you can even see other marked nest sites and sea turtle specialists actively working on their nest monitoring project. 🌳 Happy Arbor Day! 🌳 Today, let's celebrate the importance of trees in our life. Trees provide habitat for wildlife, clean our air, and offer countless benefits to our communities. Here are a few ways you can celebrate Arbor Day: Plant a Tree: Gather friends, family, or community members and plant a tree in your yard, local park, or school. Choose native species to support local ecosystems. Volunteer for Tree Planting Events: Join local organizations or government initiatives hosting tree planting events in your area. It's a great way to give back to the community and the environment. Go on a Nature Walk: Explore nearby forests, parks, or nature reserves and appreciate the beauty of trees and their role in supporting biodiversity. No matter how you choose to celebrate Arbor Day, remember that every action counts in promoting tree conservation and environmental stewardship. Together, let's ensure a greener, healthier future for generations to come! 🌴🌳🌲 📸 by Federico Acevedo #ArborDay #FloridaWildlifeFederation #FWF #KeepFLWild #WildFlorida

Late last year, the Florida Wildlife Federation and almost 1000 of our dedicated advocates delivered strong opposition to releasing the perpetual conservation easement that protects the environmentally sensitive land of Split Oak Forest. During their meeting last December, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) asked staff to provide a report and a ‘mitigation package’ to be presented at a future meeting. The issue of Split Oak has been added to the agenda for the May 1st meeting in Daytona Beach, where FWC is tasked with making a decision that will shape the future of the Split Oak Forest Wildlife and Environmental Area. On behalf of our many advocates and aligned with our mission to conserve Florida’s wildlife, habitats, and natural resources, we will be at the forefront of the May 1st public meeting to ask FWC, once again, to protect Split Oak Forest and stay true to the meaning of a perpetual conservation easement. The Amazing Give is TOMORROW! During this online giving day, your support will further the work of nonprofits across North Central Florida, including ACT as we continue our campaign to protect additional acres, springs, and wildlife habitat along the Santa Fe River! During last year’s Amazing Give campaign your generous gifts helped to secure the protection of over 400 acres along this wondrous waterway, ensuring that its wetlands continue to filter and reduce pollutants, and the freshwater flowing to its hundreds of springs grows stronger. These lands will forever provide excellent plant diversity and habitat for several endemic and listed species, as well as passive recreation for the public. This year, we have several new projects where acquisition funding is needed to permanently protect critical lands along the Santa Fe River, safeguarding these invaluable ecological and recreational resources for present and future generations to enjoy forever. Your help is needed to meet our $40,000 goal! Learn more and donate TOMORROW from 8 AM to 8 PM at the link in our bio. In this month's Wild Florida feature, we discuss the crucial role raptors play in maintaining the health and balance of Florida's ecosystems. And, we review growing threats to birds of prey, including widespread use of anticoagulants for pest control in our communities. . We can help protect animals in the wild, including raptors, by always giving them plenty of space. And at home, we can carefully research pest-control solutions to avoid using hazardous poisons. . Opting for preventative practices, such as rodent-proofing human structures, trimming foliage and tree limbs away from houses and reducing rodent attractants (such as trash, pet food, spilled birdseed and fallen fruit) can effectively protect both our homes and our environment. . Thanks to our friends at @observergroup for helping us share important environmental content such as this with our community! . You can read the article in print this week or online.
