Strength. Charisma. Loyalty. These are all common traits of some of the most successful heroes in literature. Their differences lie in their flaws, ranging from foolhardiness to stubbornness, greed, indecisiveness, and everything in between. My favorite heroes are often the ones who are misunderstood, even by themselves. When a character in a fantasy or cozy mystery believes themselves incapable of defeating the villain or discovering whodunnit, but chooses to push forward anyway, I get excited! I have to fight not to let my eyes skip paragraphs as the story unfolds, so ready am I to follow the hero as they and the people around them learn just what they’re capable of, despite (and sometimes because of) their flaws. The MISSING PIECE that's preventing your story from feeling engaging enough? 🫠 🧩CONFLICT Conflict is the central STRUGGLE or OBSTACLE that your character needs to OVERCOME by the end of your novel. It's the thing that keeps your reader wanting to know what happens next. ⏩ Conflict is a great place to start when laying out your story's PLOT because these two elements are so closely tied together. 🪢 Start by exploring the different TYPES of conflict below (there's an example for each!) and brainstorm how each could be used as the catalyst for your story's plot 👇 ✨INTERNAL CONFLICT 1️⃣ Character vs self ➡️ protagonist struggling with self-doubt that is crippling them in every part of their life ✨EXTERNAL CONFLICT 1️⃣ Character vs character ➡️ rivals or hero vs villain (think Harry Potter vs Voldemort) 2️⃣ Character vs society ➡️ protagonist vs an oppressive society (think Katniss vs the Capitol in The Hunger Games) 3️⃣ Character vs nature ➡️ a survivor story like protagonist vs wild animal or protagonist vs a tsunami 4️⃣ Character vs fate ➡️ protagonist given a deadly prophecy (think the Final Destination movies) 5️⃣ Character vs supernatural ➡️ humans vs vampires or humans vs a malevolent entity (think scary movies like Paranormal Activity) 6️⃣ Character vs technology ➡️ humans vs robots (think of the movie I, Robot) To keep your reader engaged while reading, you'll want to include both a MAJOR conflict and MINOR story conflicts throughout the narrative. Come raccontare un matrimonio che funziona, in una storia ambientata nel passato? Non è così semplice. Anche senza immaginare violenze o umiliazioni, comportamenti che un tempo erano normali oggi non sono tollerati così serenamente. Ci pensavo qualche giorno fa, mentre guardavo un film che rappresenta un matrimonio tutto sommato felice in modo coerente con il contesto storico e sociale dell'epoca. 🎨 “Maudie – Una vita a colori” racconta la storia di Maud Lewis, una pittrice canadese di metà ‘900: emarginata perché piegata dall’artrite, riprende il controllo della sua vita grazie all’arte e all’incontro con il futuro marito, Everett, un uomo burbero che sembra detestare chiunque. Il loro rapporto è delineato in modo efficace attraverso alcuni episodi in cui i due seguono un copione imposto dalle regole non scritte della società del tempo. Ad esempio: 🔸 In una scena Maud è seduta tutta curva a dipingere e con una mano continua a scacciare le mosche. Chiede al marito di mettere una zanzariera e lui sbotta che non ci pensa nemmeno a buttare soldi per una cosa così inutile. Nella scena dopo Everett arriva reggendo una zanzariera e senza dire nulla la monta sulla porta. Maud non commenta, ma sorride fra sé. 🔸 In un’altra scena Maud dipinge un quadro che le hanno commissionato. Seduto sulla soglia di casa a perdere tempo, Everett ricorda a Maud che non deve trascurare le faccende di casa. Lei dice che lo sa bene, ma continua a dipingere. Everett allora prende in mano una scopa dicendo “A spazzare ci penso io, ma faccio solo questo.” E intanto, visto che spazzando si alza la polvere che rischia di finire sui colori freschi, Maud lo chiude fuori. Everett deve mostrare di essere l’uomo di casa e ci tiene a ribadirlo con le parole. Non può mostrare di “farsi mettere i piedi in testa” assecondando le richieste della moglie, o addirittura mettendo le esigenze di Maud sullo stesso piano delle sue. I suoi gesti però raccontano un’altra storia e si mostra molto più attento e aperto di quanto vorrebbe far credere. E questa storia silenziosa è quella che interessa a chi scrive.

📚 Book Review 📚 (A non-indie read for this month) I've done things a bit out of order by reading Autumn Krause's second YA book, 𝐵𝑒𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐷𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑙 𝐾𝑛𝑜𝑤𝑠 𝑌𝑜𝑢'𝑟𝑒 𝐻𝑒𝑟𝑒 before her first: 𝐴 𝐷𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑊𝑖𝑐𝑘𝑒𝑑. To be fair, ADFTW was on my TBR list for so long. It just kept getting pushed down because . . . I don't know. Maybe it was because it was a debut book, and I really wasn't sure how good it might be (despite rave reviews). Who knows? Regardless, I read it! And just like BTDKYH, I loved it! Autumn is a natural at creating lush and believable worlds—this time an alternative history Victorian England centered around fashion. In a twist on the classic country girl goes to the big city trope, main character Emmaline strives to make a name for herself in fashion through a Project Runway-style competition at the Fashion House (despite forces that attempt to thwart her efforts at every turn). Krause is fantastic at capturing the emotions of her protagonists. More so than in BTDKYH, I really felt for Emmaline and her struggles. The end of Emmaline's tale came a bit unexpectedly, and in a way, her adventure was just beginning, but it was a fun romp of a story with a unique premise. I'm watching Autumn Krause closely from now on and won't underestimate her again! There are different stages in the editing process, and while there can be overlap in what editors call them or what gets done in each step, in general they include the same areas of focus. But like any other job, it can get really hard sometimes. For the last six months, I've been pulling 10-12 hour days, 6 days a week. Which I know is the case for many of us. Editors and proofreaders work tirelessly to help authors polish their books, and we do it with as much passion and care as if these books were ours. I always say it's a calling because I honestly don't think everyone could do it--not due to skill but patience. Unless you truly love editing/proofreading, you'll suffer doing this job since even if you live and breathe grammar and story structure, some days can feel like the 100th cello lesson for beginners. Here are the books I finished reading in April (with ratings out of 5). I read nearly half as many books in April as I did in March. That’s the way it goes sometimes. I had a few days of getting in a cycle of not sleeping well and then feeling absolutely zonked by bedtime, so only managing a few pages a day. I didn’t start reading as quickly as I could or start listening to the audiobook on 1.5-speed. It’s like intuitive eating: sometimes I’m constantly hungry and eat loads, sometimes I eat very little. It all evens out in the end.
