So, there is a full scale replica of the Parthenon in Nashville, TN. When I was a kid, every few years our schools would take a (tbh kinda boring) field trip to see this giant building in the middle of a park only a couple of miles from the Country Music Hall of fame. If anyone told us *why* there was a giant replica of the Parthenon smack in the middle of Nashville, I have no idea -but somebody had built a castle in my small town so you know, I don’t think any of us questioned it. We were in Nashville today for a doctor’s appointment for my youngest and had some time to kill, so I took my family to walk around the park and saw the Parthenon. “Why is there a replica of the Parthenon in Nashville?” “No idea.” “Huh. Cool.” We didn’t have time to go in and keeping up with my youngest meant I only got ONE real picture but - we did avoid the 2 school buses of elementary kids that showed up 😂 #writerinspiration #greekmythology

The following tips were helpful to me, especially because I knew from the get-go that I would have my books narrated into audiobooks: . . SOUND & SYLLABLES Pay attention to the phonetics of a name. The way it sounds can impact how readers perceive a character or place. A harsh, sharp name might suit a villain, while a soft, flowing name might fit a peaceful town. . . AVOID COMPLICATED NAMES If a name is too difficult to pronounce or remember, it might distract or frustrate your readers. Keep it simple but unique. . . SAY IT OUT LOUD Sometimes, names look good on paper but sound awkward when spoken. Receiving feedback can be hard—even when the person giving you the feedback has the best intentions. Here are some tips to make reading constructive criticism easier. 👩🏻💻 Understand that even kind constructive criticism can hurt. It's difficult not to take it personally, and it's easy to mistake criticism of your work as criticism of you. But it isn't. I promise. 👩🏻💻 Create a routine that makes you feel good for when you’re about to dive into feedback. Below is what I do before reading feedback. 1. Remind myself that getting notes doesn't mean my work is bad. 2. Sit down with my favourite tea and cozy blanket. 3. Put on some soothing music. 4. Take a deep breath and open my mind. 👩🏻💻 Take a breath after you've read the critique. Check in with how you're feeling and sit with the emotions for a minute. Feelings aren't bad or good. They just are. 👩🏻💻 Harness your feelings by asking yourself questions. When you're ready, use your emotions as a guide. Take a look at these examples: - Do you feel silly because you didn't think of x like that? This is your opportunity to expand on it! - Do you feel the person took away the wrong message? It's time to look at what led them astray and make some changes! Remember: it’s okay to find this process difficult. Give yourself a break and let yourself feel any feelings you might have. Giving yourself a day or so to let the feedback sink in can be helpful too! Once you feel refreshed, dive back in. You’ve got this! Very excited to have been selected as a moderator for the next round (7!) of Writing With The Soul!🖤✨️ I feel honored, coming full circle from Round 1, back here to support others as they step forward and embrace their writerly selves and our (not so little anymore!) community. When Adrienne first announced her WWTS workshop at the end of 2020, I was out on a jog and SPRINTED home to sign up with tears in my eyes. The world was in such a dark place, and it felt like a little guiding light of hope. My gut knew this was something I had to do. And I’m so glad I listened to it because not only did I meet my incredible CP’s through this workshop, I was also unknowingly invited into a community determined to help in every facet of my writing path. As WWTS has grown, there have been generous amounts of opportunities for us to grow with it, and I’m truly grateful. This community has been a sanctuary of loyalty, understanding, and optimism through every up and down. And the workshop itself is not only inspiring, but creates access to the vulnerability and self reflection we all need to improve as writers and people.
