For years, Forgetting Sarah Marshall has been my favorite Rom-Com, but The Big Sick may be looking to overtake that #1 spot. The Big Sick is written by Kumail Nanjiani and his wife Emily, and is loosely based on how he and his wife first met, experienced a tragic event, and then became married. This movie is also Nanjiani’s first lead role in a film. The comedy in this movie is sharp and hilarious. For me, all of the jokes were spot on and present in parts that were expected and unexpected. Without giving anything away, there’s a scene where 9/11 is brought up, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. While there is humor throughout the movie, there are also some scenes that deal with more serious matters. What do you do when you’re put into a situation where you have to make a decision where you might not see the person you love ever again? What do you do when your family is disapproving of dating outside of your race/religion? I loved everything about this movie. It is hilarious. It is way more heartwarming than I would’ve thought it would be. Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Holly Hunter, and Ray Romano shine in this movie. If you’ve been looking for a movie to watch, and you haven’t seen this, I can’t recommend it enough. You will most definitely laugh out loud, and possibly shed a few tears. I’ll be watching this again soon because I want to be absolutely sure that this movie truly is deserving of the 10/10 that I’m going to give it. There is some strong language for those that may be sensitive to that, but the story is truly beautiful. Against her better judgment, she decides to spend the night but soon discovers there's a lot more to fear than just an unexpected house guest. The very scarce marketing made for an unpredictable thrill ride of terror. The first act builds up so much suspense. Bill Skarsgård is framed as a red herring for the audience. He’s charming and yet neither we or the unsuspecting woman knows his intent. The rundown Detroit setting is an eerie atmosphere that truly spiked up the suspicion. Second act is played out like a separate story. Justin Long never gets it easy in horror movies, man has gone through hell and back, this time however he’s such a vile human being. The labyrinth of basement corridors is dark and gloomy. There’s twists and turns at every corner. Movie touches on real world social and cultural issues: racial discrimination, incest, female vulnerability, and human trafficking. Layers upon layers of social commentary that take a second to fully dissect and properly register. Visceral moments that left me with shock and an upset stomach, you know it’s good horror when that’s the symptoms. Third act is the detractor. It’s quite rushed that felt abrupt. I wouldn’t have minded a 2 hour version to write the sequences longer. It’s one of 2022’s best horror films that were so original and gritty. Unsettling cinematography, realistic acting, and raw storytelling. 8.5/10

Finally getting around to also showing Emily the horror film, "Barbarian (2022)" which came out this past year! Wow when I originally saw this movie in theaters with my brother and some friends it surprised us all! It was so unexpected and I think the marketing team did a good job keeping the main story to this movie obscure so you didn’t go in with any sort of expectations! I’m surprised this movie hasn’t got a home video release of any kind on Blu-ray or DVD, you can buy it digitally but no physical media version of this film exists yet, hopefully that changes soon! I don’t know if they ever made another trailer but I only ever saw one and it never gave much away. Turns out, it really gives us nothing at all. This had so many great twists and turns throughout. At a certain point about an hour in, my boyfriend and I looked at each other and asked if we were still in the same movie. Against her better judgment, she decides to spend the night but soon discovers there's a lot more to fear than just an unexpected house guest. For a horror movie, I didn’t expect this to be stupidly funny. There were times I found myself laughing at the most inappropriate scenes. You guys know I’m not a big fan of horror so for me to watch this and enjoy it, it must be good right?! It initially starts like your typical creepy scary story. I liked that this story didn’t go down the ghosts or evil spirits route. I like realistic storylines that make it hard to fall asleep after watching. The storyline could have been way better but the acting was great in this. You can actually watch this from beginning to end. Justin Long’s character (AJ) was too funny in this. I couldn’t imagine a more perfect actor for such a ridiculous asshole. It was a refreshing twist to this horror genre. I actually recommend this one! What an unexpected wild ride. From the trailer you'd think the movie is about one thing but it's actually so completely different to what it makes you think it is. I thought this was a very strange yet creative film. I found it to be actually kind of scary and it had some great jump scares. The scenes in the basement tunnels were also super claustrophobic, it had me STRESSED. The first act of the movie is so different to the second and I've noticed that a lot of people don't actually enjoy the second act very much. It is a huge shift in plot as the first act is very generic, however I personally think it takes such an unexpected and interesting direction. Reviewing Barbarian; I just watched this and it’s good. As for the storyline After Tess arrives at a air bnb to learn Keith is there at the same time and after getting locked in a basement she learns of the horrors and needs to escape. As for the cast I liked Georgina Campbell and Bill Skarsgard and Justin Long and others ok too. Overall it’s a good film full of action and tension and for some jumpy parts. Plot: A woman staying at an Airbnb discovers that the house she has rented is not what it seems. Review: This movie was great, the acting is really good, the main character was really likable, and this was a lot of fun. This was a crazy ride, I don't really wanna talk about a lot of that happens in the movie, because it has a lot of surprises for me in it. So I'm going to make this second half of the review a spoiler one. Well I wanna say that Bill Skarsgård was good, but he does get limited screentime in this movie, but I did know about Justin Long being in the movie, but I was surprised how much they made his character unlikable. Because his whole storyline was great, but made me really uncomfortable to watch at times, but this is Justin Long best performance I have seen him in, because he really makes me hate him. But the tape measuring scene had me tears with laughter. I wanna say the inbred monster lady was terrifying for me, I thought it was very creepy, but by the end of the movie, made me really sad for this character, because the whole journey there really got me sad for that character. For horror movies for the year, this was great one, and top 5 of the year, but it has been stacked year for horror. Me parece una película muy buena de terror, con un plot twist muy interesante, pero falta algo para ser considerada una excelente película. Punto positivo: es interesante como juega con nuestra mente con el plot twist tan absurdo y siniestro. Cuenta con un guion interesante y muy bien puesto a la práctica con escenas de pura tensión. A parte de tener un final espectacular. Punto negativo: falla bastante en la ejecución del desenlace, siendo inconcluso y hasta demasiado absurdo. No se entiende muy bien ciertos aspectos de la trama, dejándonos sin explicación. There are so many shock-and-awe moments that happen throughout “Barbarian” that keep the audience at the edge of their seat as well as some genuine moments that catch the audience straight off-guard. Right as the audience learns what terrors lay within this abandoned passageway, the movie cuts to mid-broad daylight and introduces us to AJ (Justin Long), and thereby introducing us to a secondary monster of sorts. Again, we’re not going to spoil the mysteries and the fun that is buried within “Barbarian,” but it is such a jarring tonal shift that the movie does not once, but twice, that it elevates the movie while also serving as a moment to catch your breath. J'en ai rien lu, rien vu, rien entendu sauf que c'était un film qui valait le coup d'oeil donc je me suis laissé prendre au jeu. Au final, je l'ai trouvé pas mal du tout. Il y a de bonnes idées, d'autres un peu moins mais le résultat s'avère quand même prenant.
