Damsel - In Distress of Being Forgotten The fantasy genre is one that I have deep admiration for, but have not found the last few years of fantasy movies to be particularly fruitful or original. Netflix’s Damsel starring superstar Millie Bobby Brown is a film that I had high hopes for. The early marketing material painted a picture of an ambitious, female-led fantasy adventure. Millie Bobby Brown’s acting prowess is admirable, creating a career full of potential since the mid-2010’s. With her strong roles in the past, it only made sense that she would set into a role in another period piece that is chock full of suspense, violence, and very expensive CGI. However, her acting skills, along with other recognizable and respected talent, were not enough to save this movie’s script from becoming soggy from the waters of the oversaturated fantasy genre. I struggle to find anything of lasting substance in this one. Most of what we endure is a survival montage listening to Brown scream for several minutes consecutively. I feel there are missed opportunities to create these segments in a way that reveals more about Brown’s character, the world she inhabits, and revelations about her current situation and how she ended up where she is. Instead, these revelations are made in a very matter-of-fact and plain way that removes any mystique or emotional weight from this pivotal moment that should serve to change her outlook on her world as she sees it forever. I found the most immersive elements of this film are the beautifully mystical world that we explore, even if we don’t get much time to spend in it before we are plunged into a bottomless fissure for well over an hour. This combined with a beautiful score and sound design do offer a world that feels alive one moment, and cold and desolate the next. The way this mirrors the cast’s journey does add to a more visual narrative, even if everything that is happening is explained to us verbally when no one else is around to hear it. I’m surprisingly disappointed by this one. The aforementioned promise it showed didn’t hold up, but regardless, the cast tries to breathe life into a fairytale that already feels ancient.

Damsel Il sovvertimento della fiaba classica è uno spunto piuttosto pigro per un film che ha poco da offrire a livello di trama e che incontra serie difficoltà nel mantenere vivo l'interesse dello spettatore per colpa soprattutto di Millie Bobby Brown che ce la mette tutta ma purtroppo risulta poco credibile e in alcuni casi non molto convinta. Robin Wright come cattiva della storia è ottima ma il suo ruolo è schiacciato dalla sceneggiatura che non si preoccupa dei personaggi ma punta soltanto a puntualizzare che non si tratta della solita storia di salvataggio di una ragazza in difficoltà. Buone le intenzioni meno il contenuto in una storia che vuole prendere spunto da Game of Thrones senza riuscirci granché. I've had incredible luck this year with World Premieres of New Plays. I've been invited to work on not one but two funny, moving new works that, in completely different ways, explore the human experience with humor and insight and powerful emotion. First off, I love Stranger Things which makes me a big fan of Millie Bobby Brown. I saw this was released last week and I really wanted to check this out. I'm planning on watching her Enola Holmes movies on Netflix soon as well. This movie has a similar plot to Ready Or Not. Millie plays Elodie whose family is making her marry a prince. Her family is poor, and her town is very impoverished. However, the prince is only marrying her as a sacrifice to a dragon for his kingdom. I liked this but the middle of the movie is a little boring. She is being chased by a dragon in most of the scenes. The final act is good though and the ending is satisfying. The movie is visually stunning too! The effects are great and Millie Bobby Brown is a great lead here. The supporting cast is great too including Angela Bassett, Robin Wright and Ray Winstone. Renfield (2023) It’s so absurd it’s great fun. Such a different spin on the Nosferatu. Although as much as I love Awkwafina, the cop side of the story did drag it out a little. Elles n'ont pour ainsi dire rien à se mettre sous la dent, quel gâchis ! La vraie réussite, c'est le dragon, que ce soit sa conception ou le fait que #ShohrehAghdashloo lui prête sa voix. Bonne surprise. Par contre, dragon à part, les FX sont pas folichons, les décors et les costumes sont trop propres pour un univers moyenâgeux. OK, on est dans un conte de fée aux codes pris à rebrousse-poil. Un peu de cohérence serait tout de même la bienvenue, quand un royaume est pauvre et que sa princesse en vient à manier la hache, il serait de bon ton de montrer un minimun de sueur et des fringues effilochées si ce n'est rappiecées. Côté scénar', plutôt correct, ça tient la route, même si certains symboles ne transpirent pas la subtilité, l'évolution d'Elodie reste crédible. À ceci près qu'on ne ressort pas vraiment indemne d'une chute de plusieurs dizaines de mètres... encore moins les fringues Bref, m'est d'avis que le bouquin qui a inspiré ce film pourrait être meilleur, ne serait-ce que grâce au pouvoir de l'imagination de chaque lecteur. Io sono cresciuto giocando ai giochi di ruolo da GI.R.S.A. a Pathfinder e quindi ho sviluppato un certo feticismo per la figura del drago e se poi questo viene presentato in un contesto fantasy/medievale allora non posso esimermi dal vedere il film o la serie tv che li mostra. Ora non sempre un film con un drago per me diventa automaticamente bello a meno che nel film non ci sia anche Mark Whalberg, ma della mia ossessione per l’ex Marky Mark avremo modo di riparlarne. Per giudicare se un film fantasy con Drago è valido ho creato una scala di valutazione basandomi sul modello della Scala pazza-gnocca di Barney Stinson, la mia si basa sui due film di Dungeons & Dragons: La fetecchia del 2000 “Che il gioco abbia inizio” e quello di sicuro più divertente e più fedele alla natura del D&D “L’onore dei ladri” del 2023. Ora la domanda è a quale dei due DAMSEL è più vicino…la risposta è rapida e secca: è molto vicino a quello del 2000. L’idea di base del film era anche carina, poteva essere anche una bella fiaba…ma minuto dopo minuto il pessimismo e il fastidio hanno iniziato ad avvolgermi come l’edera. Ho letto che questo è un altro film sul girl power, sul femminismo etc., assolutamente no, le donne prevalgono sugli uomini in questo film perché ci sono tre personaggi maschili uno scemo, un altro più scemo ed uno altro proprio scemo, quindi se mettevi sti uomini in “A serbian film” diventava pure quello un film sul girl power…ci sta il re che inizia il film facendo una cavolata che scatena la maledizione del drago e poi chiede scusa dopo 5 secondi quando veda l’andazzo…ci mancava poco che mettesse un bigliettino con 50 euro come quando tamponi una macchina in un parcheggio, il padre della protagonista che cambia idea dopo 5 secondi che ha fatto la cavolata e tenta il salvataggio più inutile della storia ed infine poi c’è il principe che nel film ha il compito di fare solo le facce alla mamma con dei dialoghi che potrei riassumere così: Mamma…uffa…mannaggia Del film salvo solo il design del Drago ma c’è una cosa che non accetto…i draghi possono avere un sacco di punti deboli ma non quello che ci hanno mostrato nel film…non ha senso! È come un gatto allergico ai gatti.

A commanding Millie Bobby Brown does all she can to carry this fantasy adventure (with a feminist spin); unfortunately, the film’s cheesy production value manages to thwart her every attempt. Vibrantly colorful with elaborate set pieces, yet they are so computer generated it is distracting… Not to mention, the special effects/CGI as a whole - particularly regarding the action or dragon sequences - are often laughably shoddy. Brown is given a gutsy role to really showcase her talent, while strong actors such as Bassett and Wright are squandered: with all reduced to spouting poorly written dialogue. That being said, there is still mindless fun to be had (especially for genre fans), thanks to Fresnadillo’s edgier, atypically dark take on the formulaic fairy tale. Also, Brown’s character is an admirable heroine, there’s nonstop combat, and most of the movie is admittedly thrilling. Despite its lackluster execution, there are undoubtedly far less diverting ways to spend 107 minutes. 🎬 Damsel (2024) 🎬 Rating : 3.1 / 5 (meh) Overall : Damsel’s dark fairytale doesn’t feel as dark and fresh as I had hoped. Review : Damsel offers a few unique twists on the classic dragon fairytale yet still feels familiar while trying to be fresh. It’s not at all a bad film and the struggle to survive in the second act kept me engaged. Unfortunately, the slow first act was undermined by the trailers and synopsis of the movie and the third act played out too predictably and a fell slightly short of expectations. Millie Bobby Brown delivered a commendable performance as the lead, and the creature design and costuming were truly impressive. “This is not a fairytale” With my current obsession with fantasy books, mainly ones involving dragons (unapologetically mind you! We have @bookindle to thank for this), I absolutely lapped this up. Millie Bobby Brown proves she is perfectly capable of carrying a film as she is pursued relentlessly by the Dragon (beautifully voiced by Shohreh Aghdashloo, her voice was just perfect at building the tension). Although a bit slow to start off, the moment Elodie is dropped into the Dragons lair (not a spoiler, it’s in the trailer…) the pace kicks it up several gears and the film becomes a fun game of cat and mouse with a lot of “flamey flamey hot hot” 🔥 mixed in. Damsel es una película de acción y fantasía del 2024. Una joven acepta casarse con un apuesto príncipe, pero descubre que todo es una trampa. Es arrojada a una cueva con un dragón que escupe fuego y debe confiar únicamente en su ingenio y voluntad para sobrevivir. Esta es la propuesta que nos ofreció Netflix aprovechando la conmemoración del Día Internacional de la Mujer, y apenas vi a Millie Bobby Brown en ella, dije que tenia que darle una oportunidad. Siendo honesta a pesar de que la historia sea un guionazo tras guionazo, en el sentido de que son poco convincentes las cosas que pasan, imposibles o hay muchas conveniencias de trama, la película logro engancharme, y lo principal logro entretenerme mucho, y al final hizo que pasara por alto sus muchas cosas bobas. El argumento inicial me tomó por sorpresa, como da un giro que no pensé que tendría, porque me esperaba otra cosa, y ese fue precisamente el gancho para mí que hizo que me pareciera llamativa, y me la pasara bien viéndola. Eso sí, en ocasiones abusa demasiado del CGI, y no se ve bien, en especial lo relacionado al dragón, no me la pude tomar tan en serio.
