This #graphicnovel aimed at #middlegradereaders is a great book that’s also a tough read. Tough, but necessary, both for those who see their experiences echoed in Měi Yīng’s, and for those who don’t. A few elements I appreciated: ☑️ The inclusion of her attendance at language classes; ☑️ The language barrier between her and her grandmother, which can be a common experience; ☑️ How Měi Yīng is multifaceted and a star soccer player; ☑️ The way she sticks up for herself - both to friends and the bully making fun of her. . I also really appreciated how clearly the bullying was shown (and that it was absolutely not ok), and how friends staying silent is just as hurtful. This book also was really creative in how it used color to show different languages and emotions - check out what I mean in the carousel. . This comes from @kokilabooks and @penguinkids and would be great to pick up during #aapiheritagemonth this May! . . . #kidlit #kidlitart #kidsbooks #kidsbookstagram #bookstagram #bibliophile #reading #mgbooks #mgreads #middlegradebooks #middlegradereads #middlegrade #picturebookplaydate_mg #fakechinesesounds #jingjingtsong #kokilabooks #penguinkids #picturebookplaydate_mg #picturebookplaydate_gn

Ad: 11 year-old Alyssa is forced to spend the summer holiday with her creaky, old Great-Aunt Jasmine, who she has never met before, in North London. And she’s not particularly happy about it. Until, that is, she realises her Aunt’s jumbled old tea shop and garden aren’t quite what they seem and Alyssa’s latent magical powers quite literally explode into life! You see, her Aunt owns a secret spell garden and runs a special, magical school out of it where local children can harness and hone their plant power. The beautiful and enchanted garden grows magical spell ingredients that have protected the family, the local area and the community around the garden for decades. But something sinister is afoot. The neighbourhood is under threat from a powerful development company who are pushing people out of the area. And ever since Alyssa arrived, the magic seems to be running out, it’s life water draining away. Could it be all Alyssa’s fault? Or can Alyssa learn to harness her wild and unruly magic to set things right and save the spell garden and the community? I loved this pacy, magical adventure story. The creativity and world-building is superb (I’d love to meet a flicker bee!) and I loved the fantastical storyline that the author has conjured up. I really enjoyed the themes of community- spirit, Jamaican heritage, the power of solidarity and neighbourhood spirit as well as the threads of love, friendship and family which weave through the story. I loved the magic and the spells. But what I really loved was the “greenness” of this book - the idea that gardens, green spaces and plants can be good for our very souls and can encourage us to give back to the planet because they make us happier. There are darker themes of greed, corporate power and corruption, and sadness over broken family relationships running through the book but these are handled very sensitively. Magical, inclusive, environmentally friendly, encouraging a love of gardening and the outdoors, this book gets five big fat stars from us. #middlegradebooks #middlegradefiction #middlegradereads #middlegradereaders #middlegradebookstagram #middlegradebook #middlegrademagic #kidsbooks #aneatonreadit

✨Happy 1st of May! ✨ Hope you are all having a great week. It’s been a week since I got back from seeing my favourite band on every date of their UK tour so I’m still trying to settle into routine again! I read The Vanquishers a couple of months ago. Normally vampire books aren’t my thing but I adore Kalynn Bayron so I ended up getting this at YALC last year. I really enjoyed it, a great paced middle-grade read. Actually whilst I was away I found the sequel in Waterstones but it was before the Glasgow gig & I didn’t want it to get bent in my bag or covered in beer so I didn’t pick it up 😭 TAGS: #MiddleGradeBooks #MiddleGrade #KidLit #MGLit #MG #MiddleGradeReaders #MiddleGradeFiction #MiddleGradeReads #ChildrensBooks #KidsBooks #MGBooks #MiddleGradeLit #MGBookstagram #MiddleGradeBook #MiddleGradeBookstagram #ChildrensLiterature #BooksForKids #MGFiction #MGReads #IReadMG #KidLitPicks #MiddleGradeCovers #KidsLit #BooksForChildren #TheVanquishers #KalynnBayron

First things first, there is a book before this one which I haven’t read. Did that impact on my enjoyment for this book, no. But, having said that, I think I might have understood some of the background detail a little more had I read the first book. You didn’t need it though and I still thought that this book was a five star read. Juniper and her brother Bear have escaped the oppressive life in the city and they spend their days exploring the wonders of the Wild. But with reports of sickness and rebellion in the city, Juniper is terrified for the safety of her beloved grandmother and her best friend Etienne who she left behind in the city. So, Juniper and Bear make the long journey back again to rescue their loved ones. Meanwhile, Etienne’s soul is slowly dying as he longs for the Wild, even though his body is getting stronger with the drugs they are trialling on him. As everything in the city seems to be getting worse and worse and disease is spreading, Etienne knows that he must fight for what he believes in. But when he is captured and taken off to the Institute, it becomes a race against time - will he be able to stay safe until Juniper can take him to the Wild? Will Juniper be able to save everyone she loves? I loved this action-packed wild adventure story. Set against a backdrop of environmental crisis and human error, this is a stand out story highlighting the impact of humans on the natural world and the climate crisis but striking a hopeful and heartwarming note for the future. I loved the twists and turns of the book and the adrenaline-fuelled journey of love and hope that the characters are wrapped up in. Filled with friendship, family, love, hope, nature and the environment, this is a stunner of a story for any child who enjoys a dystopian adventure and every child who has an interest in the future of the world (that’s all of them, btw!!). A thought-provoking, brilliant book. She’s helped by strangers and ends up at a Catholic school right on the Vichy border with only a guarded castle bridge between her and safety. This was a strange read. The story, at first, seemed like a regular middle grade story about middle grade school experiences, then suddenly, it switched to a Coraline-like story. Do you guys remember Coraline by Neil Gaiman? That creepy freaky story? So, that creepiness was also in Not Quite A Ghost. This story was a little stressful to read. I was bothered by the protagonist’s conditions. And maybe it was a stressful read because I just came from reading a Kate DiCamillo book and we all know Kate DiCamillo books are so gentle. Do I recommend this book? I don’t know really. My Rating: Hopefulness: 5/5⭐️s Soulfulness: 2.5/5⭐️s Complexity: 0/5⭐️s Heartbreak : 0/5⭐️s Darkness: 1.5/5⭐️s #middlegrade #middlegradebookstagram #middlegradereaders #middlegradebook #middlegradefiction #middlegradereads #mglit #childrensbooks #kidsbooks #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #waldenpondpress #harpercollinspublishers

Then she said, abruptly, “I don’t remember the three words.” “Tree,” I told her. “Table. Book.” She sighed. “Yes. And you have them now, with their stories. Keep them close. Hold onto them tightly for me. Don’t forget them.” 🤍 I saw the cover, Lois Lowry’s name, and intergenerational friendship and knew this book would be for me. Isn’t the cover art by @alonamillgram just perfect? And the book is just as lovely on the inside. I love a precocious and plucky protagonist and 11-year-old Sophie Winslow fit the bill perfectly. She’s wise beyond her years and cares so deeply for her 88-year-old best friend, Sophie Gershowitz. When Sophie Winslow is told by her parents that her best friend is struggling with her memory and cognition, she comes up with a plan to prove that nothing is actually wrong. Sophie Gershowitz is given a series of tests by Sophie Winslow but when she repeatedly fails to remember three words, little Sophie decides that maybe making mental connections to the words will help her dear friend to remember them. This leads Sophie Gershowitz back into her deepest memories and as she starts to share her stories, little Sophie begins to understand her in a whole way. This book can be read in one sitting but will remain with you for much longer. #loislowry #treetablebook #middlegrade #mglit #middlegradereads #chapterbooks #chapterbook #kidlit #middlegradereaders #middlegradebooks #middlegradereaders #clarionbooks

Just going to leave this stunner of a photo here. Anyone else adored this book? I also have a #bookfail confession to make. The cover of this signed edition is a completely different colour to the other copy of this book that we have …. And I mistakenly bought it in a fit of excitement, thinking it was the second book 😝🙈🙊🤦‍♀️ (which isn’t actually out for ages!). It was my daughter who pointed out it was the same book! I love yellow though so this cover makes me happy. 🤩 And all is well that ends well - our other copy has gone to a good home at the school library 🤗. Make me feel better and tell me your biggest book fail story? Drop it in water? (Guilty 🙋‍♀️) Splash it with cooking fat? (Guilty 🙋‍♀️) Bought the same book by accident? (Me again 🙋‍♀️) Read the same book and not remembered it from the first time (🙋‍♀️ I know, I know!). #bookconfession #bookfails #bookaccidents #middlegrademonday #welovemgbooks #middlegradebooks #middlegradefiction #middlegrade #middlegradereads #middlegradereaders #middlegradebookstagram #middlegradebook #middlegrademagic #kidsbooks #kidsbookstagram #kidsbookswelove #kidsbookillustration #kidsbookstagrammer #kidsbookreview #kidsbookblogger #kidsreading #kidsread #kidsbookreviews #kidsbookrecommendations #aneatonreadit

#bookmatchmonday ⚓️Oooo, I cannot tell you how much I adored the first book in this Mysteries at Sea series (there’s something I love about boats and the era that these books are set in) so this, the second book, went straight to the top of my reading pile when it came through the door. And what a book this is! It’s August 1936 and Alice and Sunny are together now and excited to explore their family’s new luxurious steam yacht, The Lady Rose. And their voyage upon the beautiful boat is all the more exciting because the King of England and his special friend, Wallis Simpson, will be on board. Not only that, but there is a beautiful gemstone and a poisonous octopus aboard the yacht!!! When the rare opal and the octopus guarding it go missing, Alice and Sonny have to investigate once again in order to save their family’s boat. The search is on to retrieve the priceless gem, and everyone comes under suspicion as secrets are discovered … Will the pair manage to find the gem before the ship reaches its destination and they find themselves in hot water? The journey to the truth will have them questioning everything, even their friends … Ooo, I sailed through this marvellous mystery. I adored the glamorous setting aboard the luxurious yacht and all the sumptuous detailing of the decadent boat. I adored the brilliant plot – which was filled with twists and turns – the mystery and intrigue and the characterisations of the main players. I loved the historical insights, the octopus facts, the research and detail that has gone into this book. The black and white illustrated map of the yacht was a wonderful inclusion in a book brimming with secrets and sabotage. A marvellous maritime adventure, truly deserving of five stars from us. ⭐️ Ad: with thanks to the publishers for sending this book our way for review #middlegrademonday #welovemgbooks #middlegradebooks #middlegradefiction #middlegrade #middlegradereads #middlegradereaders #middlegradebookstagram #middlegradebook #middlegrademystery #kidsbooks #aneatonreadit #kidsbookstagram #kidsbookswelove #kidsbookreview #kidsbookstagrammer

The BEST afternoon spent in @waterstonesmcr for the much-anticipated @afsteadmanauthor Skandar and the Chaos Trials’ book signing. My eldest was so nervous to meet her favourite author but she was soooo lovely and spent time talking to her about reading and what her favourite element was 💦, so much so that I think she forgot she was shy. She’s already 100 pages in and keeps gasping and making little squeaks of excitement - “embrace the chaos” was the dedication in the book and my eldest says she knows why: it’s very intense apparently! I can’t wait to get my hands on it. So, this is obviously our choice for #sundaybedtimestory with @educa8wirral this evening. What a day! Thank you A.F. #MiddlegradeMusingswithAmino Book Recommendation 25 Book: Crenshaw | Author: Katherine Applegate @kaaauthor If there is one author who can never go wrong with her books, it’s Katherine Applegate. Amino and I are drawn to her books time and again, due to her exceptional storytelling prowess as she crafts relatable characters, against a backdrop rich in empathy and authenticity. Crenshaw is a poignant and heartwarming tale that delicately navigates sensitive topics such as hunger, homelessness, and the struggles of childhood. Through the eyes of its young protagonist, Jackson, readers are invited into a world where imagination collides with reality, offering solace and understanding in the face of adversity. At its core, Crenshaw masterfully addresses heavy themes with compassion and insight. Jackson’s family faces financial hardships. Applegate skillfully portrays the emotional turmoil experienced by Jackson and his family, capturing the fear and uncertainty that accompany such circumstances. By incorporating a character like Crenshaw, a larger-than-life imaginary cat, the author provides a unique perspective, allowing readers to empathize with those experiencing such challenges in a relatable and meaningful way. What sets Katherine Applegate’s books apart is their ability to blend profound themes with moments of genuine warmth and humor. Despite the heavy subject matter, her stories are infused with moments of joy and resilience, reminding readers of the power of imagination and human connection in the darkest of times. Ultimately, Crenshaw is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the importance of empathy and kindness in a world filled with challenges. This book captivates hearts, leaving a lasting impact that encourages reflection and compassion long after the last page is turned. Read this book, and thank me later! Recommended age: 8+ @harpercollinschin #ReadersofHC

“Drop the act. Drop the beat. Drop the mic.” Steady for This by Nathanael Lessore is funny, heart-warming and refreshing. Suitable for Y7 and up. I absolutely love narrator (MC) Growls- known to his family as Shaun. He is so disarmingly honest and sweet. His speech patterns are incredible- a blend of MLE, idiom, malapropism and wordplay, both deliberate and accidental, and a wide bank of allusions and fanciful similes (again not always entirely fitting) make Growls’ voice an absolute joy. Growls’ life is not the easiest, partly because of his own unique creative decisions which seem to backfire spectacularly and partly because of the UK’s housing crisis and the irrational relationship between wages and rent. Growls’ best friend and creative partner is also suddenly off the scene recovering from serious illness. How will Growls cope? ‘Steady for This’ is celebration of young people navigating an unfair and unforgiving world. It highlights the roles and responsibilities some young people must shoulder. It also shines a light on adults who make a difference: Shaun’s mum, doesn’t get it all right but she’s doing her damnedest. Karen (people named Karen everywhere, rejoice) is a superhero, as is Mr Rix. Lessore’s new book ‘King of Nothing’ just published and I’ll definitely add it to my wishlist. #middlegrade #middlegradereaders #middlegradebook #middlegradebooks #funnyteenbook #teenfiction #teenbooks #teenbookstagram #middlegradefiction #yotocarnegies24 #jhalakprize24 #jhalakprize #sparkbookawards

What are your future hopes? Nine amazing authors. 9 inspiring stories filled with hope, positivity and innovative ideas, motivating our young generation to join the fight to save our beautiful planet. These stunning short stories sow the seeds of change and offer hopeful visions for our Earth’s longevity. From giant squid and plastic eating bacteria, through the re-wildling of gorgeous otters, to brilliant bug burgers, these captivating short stories are filled with imagination and thought-provoking solutions to the climate crisis. But they are not designed to instil fear in children. No, they offer a glimmer of hope and lots of positivity to encourage young readers to really care about our environment, as well as providing ideas on how to live more sustainably. We have loved these stories, our favourites being L.R.Lam’s otter tale (my eldest adores otters) and M.G. Leonard’s inspiring insect story (although we are not totally sold on a bug burger - however, my eldest and I did agree that we thought crickets were yummy when we ate them!). After each story, there is an editor’s note by Lauren James which provides inspirational words and picks up on the themes in each story in this anthology. A book which looks to the future and provides hope. A book which encourages young people to care. A book which is filled with the power to change things by raising our awareness and making tweaks to our life for the greater good. A book that all of us should read. 🕵️ I've been a mystery fan my whole life ... and my fun, quirky mystery TROUBLE AT THE TANGERINE came out earlier this month. But some people don't know that WHEN SEA BECOMES SKY is the book that made me really want to try writing a mystery! 🔎 In a way, you could think of WHEN SEA BECOMES SKY as a non-traditional mystery. I definitely felt like I had to learn some mystery-author-type skills while I was writing it. I learned a lot about how to structure a mystery and how to make a clue of trails make sense in one way on the first read and yet still hold up to a second or third reading. 👣 It was fun to see this part of the Publishers Weekly review that saw the mystery elements of this book! 🗝️ Have you ever wanted to write a mystery? #middlegradebook #middlegradereaders #middlegrade #summerreading #mysterysolved #readingismyescape #mysterybook #bookfun #books4kids #familyreading #raiseareader #scbwi #kidbooks #youngreaders #whatareyoureading #letsread #instareader #bookchat #kidsbook #currentread #raisingreaders #allthebooks #ilovetoread #middlegradebooks #readersgonnaread #avidreader #whattoread #kidbookstagram #nextread #summerread

Dear friends! For the last few years I’ve been working on a middle grade book series. It’s dear to my heart and I’m thrilled to announced that it’s finally published! Today is the official launch! My book “Gleam: Semma and the Secret of Stuffmore” is a middle grade fantasy with adventure, heart, laughs, and a great mesage for kids (and adults too!).  13 years in the making, a hundred drafts and revisions, and it’s finally complete and ready to share. I appreciate everyone who encouraged me to keep going and who read early drafts and gave me feedback. I can’t wait for people to read it. Truthfully, I love writing words but am not so good at getting the word out about what I write.  So here’s the deal: If you’re interested in reading it, know kids who might enjoy a great adventure, or just want to support me, you can buy it on Amazon (kindle or paperback). Spread the word, and please leave a review, because without reviews no one besides my friends will know it exists.  Thank you! We LIVE for a new Kate Di Camillo book! And this divine little hardcover for middle-grade readers is fantastic. Emma says in the latest edition of our newsletter for Primary schools (look out for it if you are subscribed - get in touch with us if you're not): 'As with all DiCamillo's writing, the characters in this novel are drawn with gentleness, deep thoughtfulness and quirkiness. This story is told from the point of view of 10-year-old Ferris, and chronicles a short time in the life of her family. The dialogue is full of humour and personality, and readers will be left with hearts fully satisfied!' #middlegradereaders #booksforkids #dymocksmelbourne #melbournebookshops #collinsstreetmelbourne

“You know, just because it wasn’t a perfect life doesn’t mean there weren’t perfect moments.” 🤍 @kloshaughnessy is an auto-buy author for me. I know she will always create a story that will hook me right off the bat with a strong sense of voice and place and so much heart. THE WRONG WAY HOME was really remarkable. To write a story for middle graders about a twelve-year-old girl and her mother leaving a cult is no easy task. I thought it was handled with such creativity and care. There was a sense of danger without it ever being too scary and like THE LONELY HEART OF MAYBELLE LANE and LASAGNA MEANS I LOVE YOU, the characters were so easy to love and root for. They were able to overcome their difficulties to find themselves and family along the way. I highly recommend. #thewrongwayhome #kateoshaughnessy #middlegrade #middlegradebooks #middlegradereaders #middlegradefiction #kidlit #mglit #readmoremiddlegrade

🌟📚 Embracing Gratitude and Alexander's Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day 📚🌟 We've all experienced those days where everything seems to go wrong, just like Alexander in "Alexander's Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day." But amidst the chaos and frustrations, there's always one thing we can choose to hold onto: gratitude. Here are two reasons why embracing gratitude can help turn our frown upside down and brighten even the toughest days: 1. Shifts Perspective: When we focus on what's going wrong, it's easy to get caught up in negativity and despair. But practicing gratitude helps shift our perspective and allows us to see the silver linings amidst the storm. By acknowledging the things we're grateful for, no matter how small, we can find moments of joy and beauty even in the midst of chaos. 2. Fosters Resilience: Cultivating a mindset of gratitude strengthens our resilience and ability to bounce back from adversity. Instead of dwelling on setbacks or dwelling on what we lack, gratitude empowers us to appreciate the blessings in our lives and find the strength to persevere through challenges with hope and optimism just like Alexander's story. Today, I'm grateful for the warmth of the sun shining through my window, a good cup of coffee, and the birds chirping. They all remind me that each day is a new opportunity to embrace gratitude and find joy in the little things. What are you grateful for today? Share your blessings in the comments below and let's spread a little gratitude together! 🌞❤️ #Gratitude #Perspective #Resilience #ChooseJoy #AttitudeOfGratitude #BrightenYourDay #ShareYourBlessings #middlegradereaders #middlegradebooks #middlegradefiction #middlegradereads #middlegradelit #mgreads #mglit #mgbookstagram #middlegrade #middlegradebookstagram #ireadmg #mgbooks #bookstagram #middlegradebook #middlegradebooksuggestions #middlegradeillustration #mgbook

Do you like mysteries? If you have a mystery book enthusiast or a young budding detective in your household then this is the holiday read for them! You may remember from the first book that this is a fun, new mystery series featuring a band of would-be detectives set on a small island off the coast of Jamaica. Although it helps contextually to have read the other books in the series, you could read this book as a standalone mystery very easily.   Twelve year old Fayson Dawson has been dreaming of returning to Lighthouse Island and being reunited with her friends who form Di Island Crew. But this time she has mixed feelings as she is returning to the island with her mother and someone has been sending anonymous emails accusing the detective agency of being a nuisance to the island. Can they find out who has sent the email? And what of the abandoned boat they find with two wet life jackets on board? And why do things like books and video games keep going missing? Things keep getting stranger and stranger and the Crew really need to use all their wit and smarts to uncover what is going on on the Island. Can they solve the mysteries, or will they be forced to stop operating altogether?   I zipped through this mystery adventure and enjoyed every minute of it. The characterisations (I adore Fayson’s mother and I like the fact that she struggles sometimes to say how she is feeling because I think this mirrors life sometimes), the island life, the mysteries and goings on and the sense of adventure. It’s a brilliant book for any adventure lover and marvellous mystery seeker. Two heartwarming books about girls who are determined to protect animals as they make new homes in unusual places. Opal fights for a colony of bats to be allowed to roost under a bridge in Austin, Texas. Nina observes and records a pair of whooping cranes nesting in a marsh where no cranes have been seen for a hundred years. Both girls recognize the importance of these events and educate the people around them to become allies in their quest for preservation #upliftmgreads #bookstagram #bookish #teacherreader #middlegraderecommendations #middlegradereads #mglit #middlegradefiction #middlegrade #middlegradebooks #middlegraderead #mgbookstagram #middlegradereaders #mgbooks #mgbookstagram #mgbookstagrammer #kidlit #childrensliterature #tweenread #readinginthemiddlegrades

“Together is right,” Dad said, salvaging a piece of hope from out of the silence. “Together is the only way through.” 🤍 This story was everything I wanted it to be and more. This precious little typewriter and the family it belongs to will make a home in your heart. I think anyone would enjoy this book but especially the readers who loved Res from A ROVER’S STORY or Marcellus from REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES. #middlegrademarch #middlegrade #readmoremiddlegrade #readingmiddlegrade #alliemillington #olivetti #mglit #kidlit #middlegradebooks #middlegradefiction #middlegradereaders

“She already knew the truth. Despite the dark clouds and frequent storms, the light kept breaking through.” 💛 This is the kind of book I would have loved as a young reader and still love today. Set in 1935, we follow 11 year old Halle who does everything in her power to be reunited with her beloved mother battling tuberculosis. It was hopeful and honest and just so lovely. #middlegradebooks #mglit #mindynicholswendell #middlegrade #holidayhousebooks #lightandair #kidlit #middlegradereaders #readingmiddlegrade #middlegradefiction
