The books on this list all share similar qualities that are important to me as a teacher and a parent: 1. Engaging: These stories hold kids’ attention. I have read them to countless groups of kindergartners and now with my own preschooler, and these are the ones the kids ask for time and time again! 2. Age appropriate: The story lines and the language used in these books is appropriate for the age range. There won’t be any surprises that leave you needing to explain why we “don’t say that” or “don’t treat others that way”. The storylines in these books take kids through the challenges presented, teaching important lessons. 3. Quick Reads: The majority of the books on this list are quick reads. 1-3 nights of reading to finish all the chapters. The perfect bedtime reading length! (I got you.) 4. Beginning Readers: Once your child gains the phonics skills needed for these books, they will also transition to being books they’ll be able to read independently. Ollie, the Acorn, and the Mighty Idea Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a tree? Growing strong, majestic, reaching deep into the soil with your strong roots and raising up to the sky with your many branches? Ollie Alexander Kandersteen wishes to be just that: a tree. He is tired of being picked on by the bowling next-door and long to be strong and tall, just like a tree. After Everett picks on Ollie yet again and snatches away Ollie’s new plant, a plan begins to form. He grabs an acorn, pondering for a moment: “I couldn’t. I shouldn’t.” Then down the hatchet goes being the excellent gardener that he is all determined that an order for his seed to grow down in his belly, it shall need some soil, water and sunlight! His body starts growing, rapidly taller, stronger, like a mighty oak tree. Everett shouts back that he is not impressed. Filling up with anger at the thought of still being bullied, Ollie makes a rash decision and gulps Everett down into his great big belly. Ollie should be feeling relief but instead he has a huge stomach ache. Turns out being mean to his bully did not make him feel better. Ollie decides to let Everett put and make amends. Then Everett let him in on a little secret: jealousy is the motivation for his bullying. He has noticed how Ollie has a wonderful green thumb and his garden is less than desirable. A plan is hatched yet again and the two boys work together to grow not only a nee tree but a strong friendship. The cover page with its beautiful autumn color palette drew me in but the story has kept me wanting more! Ollie, the Acorn, and the Mighty Idea is not only an excellent tool for teaching kids about bullying, but it is also a lovely example about being misunderstood and giving someone another chance. I love the fact that even though Ollie was the one being bullied, the story still shows that he also made a mistake and tried to make it right. A great example for young readers, showing them that no one is perfect and we are all trying to do our best. Every once in a while a bedtime story is randomly chosen at the perfect time. My second graders are finishing a STEM unit on states of matter and tonight’s book will be a fun connection. The story is about a group of penguins who find themselves in a frozen huddle and must figure out how to unthaw themselves. Happy Pub Day!! TugGoat Among the grassy hills right alongside a bay sat two friends. Cordelia the goat and her best friend Pog the pig sat side by side watching the tugboats everyday. Cordelia was fascinated by them and dreamed about one day becoming a tugboat. Having special signal horns, towing lines, and especially being ready to help whenever it was needed. One day Cordelia declared to Pog that indeed she was a tugboat… no wait a TugGoat! Mean laughter came from nearby, it was Hyacinth and she was not being very understanding or supportive of Cordelia’s dream. Paying little mind, Cordelia started practicing her signal horns and even found an old tire swing with rope to practice her tugging! Hyacinth kept making comments but the two friends just tried to ignore her. After a while Cordelia and Pogs heard a cry for help. It was Hyacinth, stuck in the mud! Cordelia’s practicing paid off as she helped Hyacinth out using all of her Tuggoat knowledge! Such a cute story showing that there is no such thing as an unattainable dream! With hard work and determination, Cordelia became the must helpful of TugGoats! Comment EARTH DAY and I will send you all my Earth Day favorite read alouds, including the ones on this list! Earth Day is a day to celebrate our planet, all she gives to us and what we can do to thank her. But Earth Day is really every day. Grab a book or two from this list and begin researching and learning about climate change, recycling, reducing plastic use, caring for the environment, saving the trees, and more. Then, take what you’ve learned and turn it into an action project! There is so much kids can do to make a change, here are a few ideas I have done with students in the past: +Go on a hike and pick up trash along the way. +Create posters reminding others not to littler and hang them up in community spaces (with permission). +Do a reusable water bottle drive to donate to a shelter or food bank. +Plant a pollinator garden. +Team up with the local forest service on a tree planting day! +Write a reminder note for each of the sinks in your house to turn the water off when not in use. +Start a scrap paper bin and toss junk mail, used school papers, or old newspapers in it to use for arts and crafts. This are just a few simple ideas that my kindergartners came up with over the years. What are some ways you and your learners could contribute to a happier and healthier planet?

Meet Milton, a sweet brown bull who just happens to cry….. a lot. It’s not what you initially think, for Milton doesn’t always just cry when he is sad. Sometimes he has tears of joy while making the most beautiful piece of art. Other times he has tears of nervousness or frustration. The worst seems to be when embarrassment hits, first Milton cries when he feels embarrassed and then he feels even more embarrassed BECAUSE he is crying. What is a poor bull to do? Tired of the ever-flowing tears, Milton decides to make a change. Milton the bull decided to become Milton the bully! Luckily that didn’t last long, for Milton’s heart is just too kind. He decides to try and “cry out” all his tears. In the middle of all the tears, he feels a gentle tap on his shoulder. With blue bows in her hair and matching tears starting in her eyes, a sweet sheep introduces herself. It turns out Milton isn’t the only one with big feelings and now he has a best friend to share it all with. This is such a beautiful story dedicated to all the people with deep emotions. Feeling stressed?? 🫠 Here’s a solution! 💡 Grab a timer (I bought this visual timer for my son when he was a toddler…but I use it a lot more than he does!). Set your timer for 5, 10, 15 minutes—whatever amount of time you can manage—and force yourself to rest. 🤗 Sit. Hang out with your child while he or she has a snack instead of using that time to clean up. Put away your phone. Put away your email and your planner. Pick up a favorite book. Take a sip of tea or coffee. Lie down for a bit. Stare into space. Pray. Cuddle a kiddo. And enjoy! ☕️ You know life will be right there waiting once you are ready to hit play. ⏯️ No matter what your life is looking like, sometimes you NEED to slow down. Finished the Percy Jackson series with my oldest today. This was my first time reading these books, and it was a joy to share them with my kiddo. Rick Riordan is just our brand of humor, and I knew from the first chapter title in book one (“I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher”) that we were in for a treat! We’ve been reading but I just haven’t posted. 🤓 But today I finally got a few #FridayFavorites to share. The first two are on the theme of grandparents, specifically grandmas. My kids are so lucky they have both grandmas still around and hopefully they’ll stick around for a while longer. My grandmother raised me so reading My GrandMom by Gee-eun Lee made me feel seen. 💞 My big kid borrowed Golden Hour and wanted me to read it with her. The graphic novel covers PTSD due to a school shooting incident and how the protagonist copes and finds his anchor (mentally and in relationships). It felt like a reality check for me to read it together with her, considering the staggering number of incidents we have in this country. An ongoing conversation for sure…😩 📖 My GrandMom by Gee-Eun Lee 📖 Grama’s Hug by Amy Nielander 📖 The Golden Hour by Niki Smith Also has anyone found these delectable Churro Chips (we call them “turtle”) at Costco!? We literally found a single bag, alone, somewhere random with a PRICETAG on it. Hansel & Gretel By Bethan Woollvin @bethanwoollvin Parent: “I was super into the look of the fractured fairytale collection by Woollvin and we actually had not read them yet, so I grabbed all three. But for National Drop Everything and Read day, the boys unanimously grabbed this book. The dark, fractured retelling of a classic tale is always fun, especially for adults. But Woollvin’s illustration style is so sly and fun, it’s impossibly not to find the humor in the dark side. The splash single tone with black and white is iconic, and as a collection it looks awesome. The books are fun, and mischievous children’s especially will love it. Today is Beverly Cleary’s birthday and, as if that’s not enough to celebrate, it is also D.E.A.R. Day! In 2006 HarperCollins Children Books reached inside Ramona Quimby, Age 8 and created a national day to focus on reading. Beverly Cleary is said to have received letters from readers telling her about Drop Everything And Read programs in their schools and was then inspired to provide the program for Ramona as well. Popularity of the program grew as a result and many more children were blessed to have D.E.A.R. incorporated in their learning experiences. Today is the day to Drop Everything And Read! Scraps of cloth went into a basket, Halloween costumes were created and reused for multiple years, and there was always the mindset “it’s still good.” That’s not uncommon for people who lived through or were raised by folks who experienced the Great Depression. Nancy Bess had a Dress reminded me of that mindset; a mindset I grew up surrounded by, and I’ve had ingrained in me, as well. It’s a beautiful book with historic perspective about a little girl who knows how to make the most out of what she’s got. “Waste not, want not.” Nancy Bess is a lovely character, a great example for young readers, and her story still resonates in today’s world. If you grew up shelling peas on the front porch of your grandmother’s house this book is for you. If you have a child interested in sewing or creating this book is for you. If you want a great book with historic truth and value to it this book is for you.
