So, the "memory loss of loved ones" plot isn't very unique in movie history. But this movie feels so fresh. The actors literally slayed their characters. The cinematography is undoubtedly beautiful. The ending, MAN. I can't even express how much I enjoyed and loved this movie. I know, things are not going to be well in the end. But I found myself, rooting for a less heart-wrenching ending. Scarface (1983) @peacock "Say hello to my little friend!" is basically all I knew about the iconic gangster film Scarface. I'm back to watching movies from my Dad's 100 films I should watch. According to my Dad, what's left on the list of a few classic war films, guy movies, and stupid funny movies. I think I should be able to complete the list this year. I noticed Scarface was on peacock to stream, which was helpful as I watched the long movie over two days. Surprisingly, I enjoyed Scarface way more than I expected to. In fact, out of all the gangster films my Dad recommended, Scarface was a pleasant surprise. It's not going to make my top 10 list, but Al Pancio's performance kept me invested. Michele Pfeiffer was a standout as well, and I enjoyed her snarky and dominant performance. I loved it when she went off on Tony (Pancio) at the restaurant. The ending was very cinematic, violent, entertaining, and appropriate. When watching, it was also fun to notice other actors like Mark Margolis (Breaking Bad) and Richard Belzer (Law & Order SVU) in small roles. That's one fun aspect when watching older films is to see actors in other roles from their earlier career. Overall, Scarface was an entertaining film that was an unexpected surprise. The Quiet Earth (1985) @tubi The other day, I was watching Neil deGrasse Tyson rank science fiction films, and he mentioned a film I had never heard of, The Quiet Earth. So, I was curious and happy to have found it available on Tubi. It's 90 minutes and had an interesting last man on earth premise. Overall, I enjoyed the science fiction film as there were moments of humor and drama. The visuals were slightly dated since the film was made in 1985, but I found the story compelling. The acting was fine, and I'm glad I went in blind as I enjoyed the 3rd act. Monkey man (2024) IMDb - 7.4, Personal Rating - 9.5 Man, I'm not a big fan of action/thriller movies. But this movie is such a crazy ride of violence and artistry. First of all, I want to clear one thing, I'm an Indian and also a religious "Hindu". Personally, I didn't find anything anti-hindu or anti-indian about this movie. More or less, we all Indians know very well about our controversial political situation. Anyways, the movie is in general a well cooked dish. The cinematography and use of colour, are on top. Action sequences are gruesome and thrilling. Throughout the first half, a suffocating mystery has been kept very well. Also the first half has some pretty good offbeat humour. Dev Patel has done brilliant work as both the actor and the director. Priscilla/Присцилла: Элвис и я, 2023 Directed by Sofia Coppola, the movie tells the story of Priscilla Presley or better to say her relationships with Elvis. The movie is beautifully made - great aesthetic and atmosphere, wonderful work of costume designer. And even thought Elvis Presley enterprises didn’t allow Sofia using any Elvis songs, it even worked better for the movie. Getting back to the character of Priscilla, I’m not sure what was the purpose of Sofia in this movie, but if she wanted to give Priscilla chance to show her personality and give her own voice in the story of Elvis’ life, it didn’t work. What I saw in the movie is that following her delusional dream of being part of his life, Priscilla lost her own personality, her voice, her opinions and transformed into Elvis’ home-hold toy, she looked like he wanted, she did what he wanted, she rarely expressed opinion in anything, she tolerated all the violence, lies, cheating, and she was quite ok with that, as she was afraid of taking responsibility for her own life, and being just some girl instead of Elvis’a girl. That goes through the whole movie until the very end, when she decides to become smth else and leaves him at his worst, not trying to help him out (which confirms no big love to the person taking place at the first place) What I have to say about Cailee Spaeny - she did perform well, if that was exactly what I’m guessing they wanted to show. She did well as a teen Priscilla full of mixed emotions and feeling of affection for Elvis, as well as she did well as his pregnant lost and lonely wife. Elvis performed by Jacob Elordi was a bit too tall, but the manner of speaking was quite realistic. The storyline is so freaking good and I really love how the whole feels like a lost media episode of a 1970s late night talk show. Even though the ending is ambiguous, it's a pretty solid movie. I personally believe that Horror/Comdey is one of the hardest duo. But this movie starts as a comedy talk show and ends as a massacre. It's not that scary, but some scenes are really impressive. However, the picture itself is so beautiful giving you genuine Italy vibes, that you can definitely enjoy the movie. Besides, I didn’t like Adam much in other movies, but here he seemed really convincing. I thought, we'll know more about the supernatural entities of the town. But this movie is more focused on Laura and Leland (iykyk). That's why I was kinda disappointed. Also a lot of remarkable characters of the original series, didn't reappear in this spin off (including the recasting of Donna). But it's not a bad movie. If you have enjoyed the series, you'll like it too. I like this because this movie is so dark and hits hard. On the other hand, I was disappointed because I really missed the offbeat humour of the series. Girls State (2024) @appletv After watching Civil War, I needed the complete opposite to watch for balancing my mind. I did enjoy the fresh air and being detached from my phone for two hours. Then, I decided to watch the documentary Girls State. I went from fictional war violence action to teenage women creating their representatives in the U.S. government. Overall, I found the movie compelling, but nothing was profound or new. The girls, the film decided to focus on, were all likable as I didn't find myself annoyed. However, there were a few moments I found myself talking back because of some of the comments I heard. Oh, the innocent of teenagers. I remember that feeling. 🤣 The first 30 minutes were rushed as the film did its best to focus on different perspectives. It took forever to dive into what the girl's running for governor stood for. Finally, once they elected their Supreme Court and had a case to hear, I was more intrigued. The speeches for governor were interesting as it was very predictable in who would win. In the last 30 minutes, I was more interested as its shifts to illustrate the apparent differences between Girls State and Boys State. Here's where the film makes its strongest message. We absolutely treat male and female students with different expectations and standards. As an adult, I can understand why certain rules were applied, but the rules should apply to everyone! Shocker! (Sarcasm) The fact there was a huge difference between money and resources for the boys' program versus the girls was obviously appallingly unequal. The ending stresses how society views where women and men should be treated and validated. The more I think about the ending, the more it infuriates me. Clearly, it illustrates the message that women's accomplishments should not be displayed publicly. But, expected to sit and witness the boys accomplishments. Way to end the film, illustrating the struggles women still endure. Predestination (2015) IMDb - 7.4, Personal Rating - 10 I've always been a big fan of time traveling thriller movies. For me, this movie is a pure work of art. Everything is so good that I can't complain about anything. I've been one of the admirers of Ethan Hawk, but Sarah Snook's acting was on another level. Many people might get bored due to the highly complicated plot. Also the first half of this movie is so sensitive and emotionally heavy. But overall I can confirm that if you thoroughly watch the whole movie, at a point everything will make sense. The ending is not that confusing. A group of people might be disgusted due to the plot twist. Talk to Me (2023) @hoopladigital Every year, I'll watch one horror film that critics and audiences praise. Last year's film that fit into this category is the Australian horror flick @talktomemovie. "Talk to me" is a good example of what I want from a horror movie. First, the runtime is 90 minutes and sticks to one story. Second, we have a creepy but compelling story that becomes an allegory to death, guilt, and grief. The film follows a group of friends who enjoy connecting to the death for 90 seconds. They have a hand that they touch and say, "Talk to me." A spirit appears. They then have to say, "Let me in," to have a spiritual possession. If you're not a fan of horror films, then skip this because I thought the film delivers on the horror scale. There's tons of foreshadowing and symbolism in the film that I picked up at the end. I won't spoil anything, but there's two big foreshadowing scenes that are revealed at the end. One is extremely obvious, but the second one was solid and made the ending disturbing and satisfying. Overall, the acting was solid, which made me way more invested in Mia (Sophie Wilde), Jade (Alexandra Jensen), and Riley (Joe Bird). Now, I'm going to find something happy to watch!
