BOOK REVIEW!! What We Kept to Ourselves by Nancy Kim - Rating: 1 out of 5 stars DNF My Review: I stopped at page 40. The book is boring, poorly written and choppy. A lot didn’t make sense and reminded me of the authors first book, which I also DNF’d. The writing is confusing (example: Ronald asking John if he wants him to pick up Ana from the airport and John saying “No. I’ll go.” and then Ronald asking if they can stop by the store on the way to the airport when it sounded like John was going by himself). The meeting with the detective was confusing as well because John did not want Ana to know, but then said she was going to find out when the detective came back, but then John said he needed to go home to meet the detective (this was before picking up Ana). I wasn’t wasting anymore time on this muddled book. You've heard of an Absinthe Frappé, how about a Raki Frappé? I was inspired by the one and only @thebitterfairy. She recently made a traditional (and beautifully shot) Absinthe Frappe, and it made me think of what I use instead of that wormwood riddled spirit: Raki. I opted for the Turkish kind as I find it a touch sweeter than its Lebanese sibling. This one's for you, Paula! 🙏🏾 Sidd's Raki Frappé 1.5 oz @yenirakiglobal Raki 0.5 Simple (homemade) Mint and lemon Soda Water Muddle a quarter lemon (that's been sliced and seeded; nobody wants bitter seed taste) and some mint. Then add raki and simple syrup and ice and shake. I shook pretty hard to loosen all that muddled goodness. Double strain into glass with crushed, clear ice and top with soda. Garnish with mint. Although The Wife exclaimed, "Did you just come back from a retirement home?!" when I walked in the room with the drink in hand. I really liked how all that aniseedy goodness played with the lemon, mint and sweet simple. The soda lengthened the whole thing, making it refreshing and much more palatable. It has been a few years since we have eaten at Stella’s, with the last time not being too impressed with their dishes, but we decided to try them again. For drinks we all had a whiskey rye old fashioned sweet, which was very good. Love that they muddle them here. Appetizer consisted of the calamari which is lightly breaded and then served with a remoulade. The batter that was used looked like it was going to be flavorful but it was actually quite bland. The remoulade appeared to be made with a ground mustard and came across tart and unfortunately didn’t pair well together. Entrees ordered were the pasta Alfredo with blacken chicken added, cedar plank salmon, a big salad, and then the daily special which was cod oscar. The pasta Alfredo with blacken chicken, it’s sauce was to tight and broken, but flavored well. The chicken was definitely blackened and had good flavor. The cedar plank salmon had an orange sherry reduction and was served with fries (as a request) and lemon Parmesan brussel sprouts. The salmon was cooked perfectly but did not have any seasoning other than the glaze which was good but lacked something. The brussel sprouts were unfortunately were past the point of having a nice char and were more burned. The fries were thin cut potato wedges, which were fried great and lightly seasoned. The salad was just a basic salad consisting of romaine, tomatoes and cucumber accompanied by buttermilk ranch on the side. The cod Oscar was cod that had a hollandaise sauce with lump crab meat on top and was served with rice pilaf and grilled asparagus. Half of the cod was cooked well, the other half was over cooked and dry. The hollandaise sauce was well seasoned. The rice pilaf was under seasoned and very bland. The asparagus was grilled really good. It had a nice char on it and was super tender. Leaving mums and walking down her long driveway to my car I felt lucky to have her .. Mum never fails to inspire me, even though she has a very muddled mind and her poor old 90 year old joints are practically at a standstill and cause her so much pain she cry’s out when trying to stand and walk.. but still she talks to me all the time about how ‘one day when her joints get going , all the things she will do’ .. The garden is the thing she plans to do when she “gets going” .. of course I know she will never “get going” sadly she’s too frail and at 90 years there’s no chance of replacing any joints .. I think because she was always a very keen gardener all her life is why she still thinks she can do it ! Orange You Glad A few weeks ago I was trying a recipe I found (with a slight mod by using honey mix vs straight honey) by @stevenfingar . My wife also liked the sound of muddled mandarins, but was feeling tequila and something “Christmas-y”. So I made a His and Hers combo for the evening. To be honest, she came up with this one herself. I have to give her the credit she deserves because it’s fire. She will be running this account soon if she keeps this up lol. I can also see adding some orange cello from @derospirits to amp up the citrus! His (Rye) and Hers (Tequila) His 1.5 muddled mandarin oranges 2.5 oz rye whiskey @dadshatrye 0.5 oz honey mix (50/50 honey/water) 1 oz fresh lemon juice 1 egg white 2 dashes orange bitters @scrappysbitters Mandarin leaves as garnish. Hers 1.5 muddled mandarin oranges 2 oz tequila blanco 0.25 oz Aperitif or @aperolusa 1 oz fresh lime juice 0.5 oz homemade Christmas Syrup 0.25 oz super ginger concentrate @641.874 ‘s recipe Orange strip studded with whole cloves as garnish. . . For either drink, muddle the oranges first, then add the other ingredients and shake with ice. For better texture with the His drink, dry shake first with everything (+ egg white) without ice, then add ice and shake again). Here's the recipe to our Rosé Blueberry Smash 🫐 🫧: Ingredients (makes one cocktail): - 4 oz Libby Rosé Blend - 3/4 oz gin - 1 oz coconut water - 3/4 oz lemon juice - 1/2 oz simple syrup - 1/3 cup fresh blueberries - 4 basil leaves Directions: In a shaker, muddle blueberries and 2 basil leaves.
