Happy National Park Service Founders Day! On this day more than 100 years ago, Woodrow Wilson signed the Organic Act and thus created the National Park Service to "preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations." Thank you to all the members of National Park Service who have and continue to impart the stories that live in our parks, care for these extraordinary places, and keep us safe while we enjoy and learn about our landscape and history. #NPSBirthday #FlashbackFriday #NPSFoundersDay #NPS #BlueRidgeNPS #blueridgeparkway (Black and white photos courtesy of Blue Ridge Parkway/National Park Service)

"There is nothing so American as our national parks.... The fundamental idea behind the parks... is that the country belongs to the people, that it is in process of making for the enrichment of the lives of all of us." - FDR Happy Birthday to our National Parks Service founded this day in 1916! And a special shoutout to the Rangers, NPS employees, and volunteers keeping the parks open and wild. Day 7- Part 2: We made it! Mesa Verde National Park, a national treasure that protects the cliff dwellings and mesa top sites of pit houses, pueblos, masonry towers, and farming structures of the Ancestral Pueblo peoples who lived here for more than 700 years. This has always been captivating park and it did not disappoint. Learning about the ancestral Pueblo people was fascinating. The use of kivas in each community and significance of the sipapu left us intrigued. How they lived and used the land all made sense. It’s a park you don’t want to miss. Shout out to the NPS staff, especially Rangers John, Shannon, Jackie, TJ, and June. Celebrations aside, birthdays can also provide opportunities to reflect on all that we are and have been. For just over a century, the National Park Service has worked tirelessly to protect the nation's natural and cultural treasures and to maintain trails and facilities, to make them accessible to visitors from around the globe. However, it must be acknowledged that history extends far beyond the past 107 years. Since time immemorial, Indigenous Communities have lived on and cared for these lands. Unfortunately, their access to many places was restricted during the early days of the NPS, and many were forcibly removed as the national parks were being created. @nationalparkservice now recognizes the injustices of the past and is taking steps to make amends and to ensure that these places are accessible to all. This includes working closely with Tribal Neighbors to incorporate traditional ecological knowledge and practices into park management, partnering with Indigenous Communities to promote cultural exchange, and creating interpretive centers to recognize a site's Indigenous History —where Tribal Members can directly share their stories and culture with park visitors. As we celebrate the National Park Service's 107 birthday, let's also celebrate the progress that has been made in recognizing the nation's full history and the steps that are being taking towards a more just and equitable future. Hopefully future generations will continue to cherish and protect these places and resources for many years to come. Yesterday marked the 107th birthday of the National Park Service. For more than a century, the NPS has endeavored to “conserve the scenery and the natural and historical objects” of the parks, monuments, and sites it protects. In 1907, when Tonto National Monument was established, it was the nation’s fourth national monument and one of only a handful of federally protected sites dedicated to human history. For many years at Tonto National Monument and archaeological sites like it, Indigenous stories were often overlooked, ignored, or even suppressed in favor of archaeological narratives of “vanished people” and their “prehistoric cliff dwellings.” Today, Tonto National Monument aims to include and uphold the stories of Indigenous people that teach us about this revered site and the landscape surrounding it with the ultimate hope that visitors to the monument arrive at a more accurate and holistic view of Native American history and why it matters. How have you learned from the inclusion of Indigenous perspectives? Image: NPS: B. Happy belated to the @nationalparkservice ! Thank you for all you’ve given to my family & I. From the Civil War Battlefields and Fredericksburg Market Square where we took our engagement photos, the history lessons provided by my Grandpa, and the countless parks and sites out west explored with my late Father, the NPS has been such a source of pride and happiness in my life since birth. That pride and happiness has translated to a love of history and historical preservation as an adult. Thank you for protecting all of my favorite places. Today marks the 107th anniversary of the National Park Service, an institution that has been a cornerstone of American conservation and outdoor recreation since its establishment on August 25, 1916. Over a century ago, the United States took a monumental step in preserving its natural wonders, cultural landmarks, and historical sites for future generations to explore, learn from, and cherish. The National Park Service was created with a simple yet profound mission: to protect and manage the nation's natural and cultural resources for this and future generations' enjoyment, education, and inspiration. From the awe-inspiring vistas of Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon to the historical significance of Gettysburg and the Statue of Liberty, the National Park Service has been a guardian of America's most treasured places. As we celebrate this milestone, let's all take a moment to appreciate the dedicated rangers, scientists, and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain these sanctuaries. Their efforts ensure that these parks remain pristine and accessible, serving as a testament to the importance of environmental stewardship and cultural preservation. In an age where the natural world faces unprecedented challenges, the National Park Service is a reminder of what can be achieved when a nation commits to safeguarding its heritage. So, whether you're an avid hiker, a history buff, or someone who enjoys the beauty of nature, consider visiting a national park to celebrate this special occasion. After all, these parks aren't just America's best idea—they're a gift to the world. We decided that our first Instagram post would be made on this particular day, commemorating the national treasure that is a massive part of our outdoor ministry. Happy 107th Anniversary, National Park Service! Here's to many more years of exploration, conservation, and inspiration. #NPSBirthday #nationalpark #findyourpark #nps #encuentratuparque #nationalparkgeek #nationalparkservice #nationalparkphotography #nationalparklodge #nationalparklove Photo: @adrianwilcox

Here's a candle to celebrate the 🌳 @nationalparkservice's 107th 🎂 birthday today! What's #YourParkStory? With the 📜 signing of the “Organic Act” by President Woodrow Wilson, this created the National Park Service in 1916, a new federal bureau in the U.S. Department of the Interior (@usinterior). ⭐️ The National Park Service preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. Our youth are the future, so we thank all our parks, partners, and individuals for supporting the next generation of public land leaders! While you may be familiar with the 63 park units with “National Park” in their designation, the National Park Service actually manages 4️⃣2️⃣3️⃣ individual units covering more than 85 million acres in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and US territories. With at least 19 naming designations, these units are commonly referred to as "parks." They include national battlefields, historical sites, military parks, lakeshores, memorials, monuments, parkways, preserves, reserves, recreation areas, rivers, wild and scenic rivers, scenic trails, seashores, and others. 👉 Related areas include affiliated areas, authorized areas, commemorative sites, National Heritage Areas, National Trails System, and the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. We were told there would be cake? 🎂 Hmm, the ratio of park to cake is too big! Visiting parks is ‘batter’ with cake. National Park Service Director Chuck Sams was on hand at America's largest national park, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve in Alaska, to help commemorate the 107th anniversary of the founding of the National Park Service. At 13.2 million acres, the park is one of 400+ national parks that make up the National Park Service, established on August 25, 1916. Did you visit a national park today? Did you have any cake? #NPSBirthday #YourParkStory #MyParkStory #MiParqueMiHistoria @wrangellstenps

The National Park Service turns 107 today! Happy #NPSBirthday! The NPS has invited everyone to share their “park story” for their birthday celebration this year, and we wanted to take this opportunity to share ours with you! MIKAELA: While brainstorming about Grand Canyon experiences that have stuck with me, I quickly noticed a theme: they were mostly memories I shared with people I care about. Sitting in the dark swapping haikus about the symphony of frogs surrounding us in Keyhole Canyon; slowly climbing up through the Coconino Sandstone and laughing at jokes during our rests on switchback corners; hiking into Phantom Ranch in the dark with a heavy pack and feeling so, so grateful to not be alone; playing Set and travel Catan in camp after dinner… Grand Canyon is one of my favorite places to experience solitude, but for me it’s usually the moments shared with good friends that are truly magical. #MyParkStory is really better described as #OurParkStories. ANNE: #MyParkStory in Grand Canyon begins and continues with fossils. Starting my job here in 2016, I helped to develop a functioning paleontology program. Just this year, we finally led our first ever NPS Paleontology-focused full river mission and hope to continue documenting fossils along the river in the years to come! For more info on my park story, check out the link in our Facebook post (fb link in our bio)! #NPS #GrandCanyonNP #Friends #Scientists #Geology #Paleontology

Our stunning national parks are on the frontlines of the climate crisis. In @DenaliNPS, high temps triggered a landslide that cut off access to half the park. And in @SequoiaKingsNPS, wildfires burned ancient sequoias. We’ve got to fight like hell to protect our parks. #NPSBirthday

August 25th, marks the 107th anniversary of the creation of the #NationalParkService. So today we're featuring one of Colorado's most iconic national parks: The Great Sand Dunes! The traditional Ute word for the Great Sand Dunes is Saa waap maa nache, meaning "sand that moves." They are the tallest aeolian (wind-produced) sand dunes in North America, towering more than 700 feet above the valley floor. What is now The Great Sand Dunes National Park has also served as a cultural crossroads for more than 10,000 years of human history. from Paleolithic big-game hunters to nomadic Native Americans, Spanish conquistadors, transcontinental explorers, hard rock miners, and modern-day tourists. In 1932, the Great Sand Dunes were designated as a national monument, and in 2004, the park attained the status of official national park and preserve. This photo shows The Great Sand Dunes National Park, photographed by John Fielder in 1986. You can learn more about The Great Sand Dunes in this article from the Colorado Encyclopedia.
