I had the most amazing time this weekend at Camp NPCA in Zion National Park. #ad I can’t imagine a more perfect way to close out National Park Week than by connecting with the land and fellow nature lovers! Our day started at the Zion Lodge where we got to meet everyone and learn a bit about NPCA and the work they do! If you don’t know, NPCA is the only independent membership organization devoted exclusively to advocacy for America’s national parks. They have accomplished some pretty amazing victories for our parks like their recent win of restoring grizzly bears back to North Cascades National Park! I would highly recommend checking out their page to learn more and get involved!! After getting to know everyone, we got to explore the park from a new perspective with a horseback ride! I’ve only ridden a horse once or twice in my life so I was pretty excited! The cowboys guiding us were incredible and full of jokes and information, this was definitely a highlight of the trip for me! We regrouped for lunch and celebrated Max’s birthday! We also played some National Park Trivia and worked on our Photo Scavenger hunt! After lunch we rode the shuttle to the trailhead for Emerald Pools. Did you know that Zion is shifting toward Zero emissions with fully electric shuttle busses?! That’s pretty cool if you ask me! We hiked the Emerald Pools Trail stopping at the middle, upper, and lower pools before heading back to the Lodge to wrap up the day. We went around talking about our experience and a common theme was the word “connection;” a connection to the earth, to Zion National Park, to NPCA’s work, and especially to each other! I couldn’t be more grateful to @npcapics for organizing the experience! 💚 And to the sponsors who helped make it possible! @puravida @murphysnaturals @homage And to the supporters who sent us goodies that made the day even more special! @rowdymermaid @nomadixco @shar.snacks @heatherschoice If you want to get involved in NPCA’s mission to protect our parks, you can become a supporting member like me (link in my bio to sign up)! Happy trails! #NPCA #ProtectOurParks #NationalParkWeek #CampNPCA #NPW #NPW2024 #ParkAdvocate

This is why we can't have nice things because of jerks like the parents of 6-year old Ivy Silvers and her sibs giving them a sharpie to deface a national park unit. And the jerks who defaced Icebox Cave at DeSoto State Park. And no one needs this monstrosity of an RV. #protectourparks #littlerivercanyon #stopvandalism

Well that wasn’t smart. A man who reportedly kicked a bison in Yellowstone National Park was injured and then arrested for his actions. Clarence Yoder, 40, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, allegedly harassed a herd of bison and then kicked one of them in the leg. Yoder was injured in the encounter, according to the National Park Service, suffering minor injuries. Witnesses reported Yoder to authorities, and he was eventually found by park rangers in a vehicle in West Yellowstone, Montana. He was arrested and charged with being under the influence of alcohol, disorderly conduct, approaching wildlife and disturbing wildlife, the NPS said. The driver of the vehicle was identified as 37-year-old McKenna Bass, also of Idaho Falls, Idaho. She was arrested for driving under the influence, failure to yield to emergency light activation and disturbing wildlife. Both Yoder and Bass pleaded not guilty. Each violation can result in fines up to $5,000 and six months in jail. pc: NPS #nationalparknews  #nationalparks #nps #findyourpark #nationalpark #getoutside #adventure #explore #exploremore #parks #protectourparks #outdoors #exploretheworld #ourplanet #newsupdate #news #yellowstone #yellowstonenationalpark #yellowstonenp #montana #visitmontana #tourons #touronsofyellowstone #bison

A climber survived a 1,000 foot fall off a mountain in Denali National Park & Preserve, but her climbing partner died.  Robbi Mecus, 52, and a 30-year-old woman were climbing Mt. Johnson on Thursday, April 25. They fell while climbing a steep route of mixed rock, ice and snow in the area known as “the Escalator.” Another climbing party saw it happen and notified park rangers. That team went to help and kept the 30-year-old woman warm and alive through the night. Mecus was killed in the fall.  The survivor was flown to safety by Denali’s high altitude helicopter pilot and two mountaineering rangers. Later, she was evacuated to Anchorage for advanced medical care.  Mecus’ body was recovered Saturday morning, when the weather cleared. She was from Keene Valley, New York, and had been a forest ranger with the state Department of Environmental Conservation.  Denali National Park Superintendent Brooke Merrell said, “We are grateful for the rescue efforts of Denali mountaineering rangers and the two good Samaritans on Mt. Johnson who helped save a fellow climber’s life. We extend our thoughts and condolences to the friends and family of Robbi Mecus.” pc: NPS (showing the "Escalator" route on Mt. Repost from @nationalparknews • What’s described as “countless cases” of vandalism and damage have forced the partial closure of highly trafficked trails in New Mexico’s Petroglyph National Monument, effective April 29.  Visitors have been moving rocks from their original locations to stack into cairns, which can cause damage to archeological and cultural sites. The Mesa Top area within Boca Negra Canyon and the uppermost segment of Mesa Point Trail will close. “This is a special place that warrants our protection and care,” said Petroglyph National Monument Superintendent Nancy Hendricks. “At Boca Negra Canyon, we are constantly seeing increased damage from visitors scratching, moving and stacking rock, and from off-trail use. These impacts cause long-term and even permanent damage to irreplaceable cultural sites.” Boca Negra Canyon is home to the most visited and most accessible petroglyphs in the national monument and is its only fully developed area. pc: NPS file image of the trail in Boca Negra Canyon #nationalparknews  #nationalparks #nps #findyourpark #nationalpark #getoutside #adventure #explore #exploremore #parks #protectourparks #outdoors #exploretheworld #ourplanet #newsupdate #news #newmexico #visitnewmexico #petroglyph #petroglyphnationalmonument #cairn #nmnews #mesapointtrail #bocanegracanyon

Today we spent time in sacred places to many native people. One of those places was Bears Ears National Monument. We visited ruins at Edge of the Cedars, and looked at amazing ancient pottery. Later we checked out Antelope House at Canyon de Chelly. We took some awesome dirt roads through Monument Valley as well. The day ended just being in awe of what is left of ancient volcano cores. "When I make it to Moab, I'll get my canteen filled. There's nothing that the road cannot heal" ~Conor Oberst What a wet and wonderful day of hiking with my favorites today. First we did a little off-roading into the little Grand Canyon near Castle Dale. It was sketch due to some rain but ridiculously beautiful. Then we spent our day on more gravel and dirt roads around Jurassic period formations and visited an active dig site at Cleveland Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry. Later on, rain stopped and we decided little man needed to see some of our favorite nooks in Arches National Park and Canyonlands. My kiddo swam with some strangers kids, like life was alright again. It was decent. What on this earth could be better... Zion National Park’s congested south entrance could soon get new roundabouts, a new pedestrian bridge and additional parking. This comes as the Utah park continues to see a surge of visitors, with nearly 5 million people per year. That’s twice as many visitors as the park saw in 2000, when the visitor center was built. The National Park Service is also proposing realigning the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway. A new underpass would allow people to connect the popular Pa’rus Trail without having to dodge vehicles. One roundabout would be built just beyond the south entrance. The other would be built near the Watchman Campground and visitor center. All of this is designed to protect the area’s natural resources, while keeping hikers and drivers safe. Construction could start as soon as the fall, if approved, with work slated to finish in 2026. pc: NPS #nationalparknews  #nationalparks #nps #findyourpark #nationalpark #getoutside #adventure #explore #exploremore #parks #protectourparks #outdoors #exploretheworld #ourplanet #newsupdate #news #zion #zionnationalpark #zionnp #utah #visitutah #improvements #visitors #construction #tourism

#TheMoreYouKnow I #SouthernSierraMiwuk #MariposaCountyHistory #Repost @nationalparknews with @use.repost ・・・ Yosemite National Park was originally called “Ahawanee” by the southern Miwok people who lived there. The Miwok word for grizzly or adult bear was “uzumati.” The word “uzumati” was corrupted by settlers who pronounced it “Yosemite” and then applied the name to the native people. In 1851, a battalion of white soldiers named the valley “Yosemite” while chasing native people into the area following a series of conflicts between settlers and tribes. Whenever I have a chance to walk outside, I never cease to be amazed at what nature comes up with. Such beauty, such perfect symbiosis. It all makes sense, and it all works together, and it honestly all makes me believe in something bigger because it's just so perfect. How lucky we are to call this Earth home. These are from a serendipitous trip to New England last spring, in which we happened to be there during this extremely fleeting apple blossom season. This was the first day of our trip, and that evening the winds came, and most of these dainty flowers fell to the ground before the next day.

This week we’re focusing on Heron View for our Local Gem. Heron View is a 98 acre preserve with a 1.4 mile loop trail through it. It is a younger forest, having been restored in the mid 20th century. Prior to restoration it was used for agricultural production. After restoration efforts we now have a beautiful forest environment for our native species to thrive in. A mixture of floodplains and forest makeup Heron View which makes it a great spot for, you guessed it, Great Blue Herons. Heron View has some of the best spring flowers. You can see trillium, spring beauty, buttercup, mayapple, bluebells, and dutchman’s breeches in huge swathes along the trail. John Muir, the “Father of Our National Parks,” (United States of America) wasn’t afraid of a challenge! He traversed countless miles across America’s wild landscapes, his passion for nature igniting a fire that led to the establishment of Yosemite, Sequoia, and Grand Canyon National Parks, along with many others. Muir wasn’t just an explorer; he was a tireless advocate for conservation. Through his writing and activism, he urged the government to protect these irreplaceable natural wonders for future generations. His unwavering belief that wilderness areas deserved federal protection continues to shape how we connect with nature today. 🌎 Muir’s legacy inspires me, and countless other explorers, to not just adventure, but to be advocates for the wild places we cherish. Through his writing and activism, he showed us the power of fighting for the natural world. His unwavering belief that wilderness deserves protection continues to shape how we connect with nature today. Seeing these vast landscapes, fills me with awe and motivates me to explore responsibly, leaving no trace and speaking up for their future. Today we hiked at Bryce Canyon, Capital Reef, and then Goblin Valley. Utah is a place of wonder. @happilyinflicting and I have found ourselves feeling at home on the trails here time after time. We've been to Bryce and a few other parks in all seasons. Today, some of our plans were canceled out by snow, so why not take the best little boy in the world to Bryce Canyon. It was a blessing to ever visit these places at all, but now, returning to many of them, watching our kiddo hoist himself up out of a slot canyon in Goblin Valley with the same wonder I first felt... Oiy, there are moments you can't explain, the image is only burned in your soul. Tonight, we will sleep in a room I insist on every single time we visit Green River. It's just a place near to my heart. A diner Anthony Bourdain would rave about, with the best service and just three rooms directly along the Green river beneath it. Maybe it's nostalgia, or the amazingly indescribable times I have had along this river up and down the west with the best gal a man can ask for, but Green River, I fall in love with living all over again every time. Also, if you're into geology, the San Rafael Swell blows my mind too. #optoutside #protectourparks #littleloveofmylife #hiketogether #capitalreefnationalpark #brycecanyonnationalpark #goblinvalley

Hundreds of boulders, trees and other debris from a large rockslide have covered the famous John Muir Trail between Clark Point and the top of Nevada Falls in Yosemite National Park. With at least 1,000 feet of the trail buried under rubble, the trail is now closed until further notice. Extensive work is required before reopening, including drilling and blasting the boulders. The area must also be assessed for the possibility of future rockfalls. Fortunately the trail was closed for the season when the rocks fell, and no injuries were reported. In the meantime, hikers at the California park are urged to heed the closed gates and stay out of the area for their own safety. pc: NPS #nationalparknews  #nationalparks #nps #findyourpark #nationalpark #getoutside #adventure #explore #exploremore #parks #protectourparks #outdoors #exploretheworld #ourplanet #newsupdate #news #yosemite #yosemitenationalpark #yosemitenp #norcal #rockfall #rockslide #landslide #california

Continuing with National Park Week the next park I am highlighting is Bryce Canyon National Park! Bryce Canyon National Park is one of the five parks in Utah, known as the Mighty 5. Bryce Canyon was founded in 1928 as a National Park! This park is known for the red rock structures known as hoodoos. These are formed by frost weathering and stream erosion. Bryce Canyon sits at an elevation of 8,000-10,000 feet. The most famous trail in the park is the Navajo Trail. A man and his small dog are missing after he apparently tried to navigate the wild waters of the Grand Canyon on a makeshift raft. 58-year-old Thomas Robinson and his Welsh Corgi (➡️ for photo) appear to have launched their raft from Lees Ferry, a fishing and boat launching point in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The raft is just three planks of wood lashed together. At first glance, it does not appear to be a suitable craft for the notorious whitewater of the Colorado River. Robinson’s pickup truck was found at Lees Ferry. He is from Santa Fe, New Mexico.  The National Park Service is asking anyone who may have seen Robison to contact Grand Canyon Dispatch at 928-638-7805. pc: NPS #nationalparknews  #nationalparks #nps #findyourpark #nationalpark #getoutside #adventure #explore #exploremore #parks #protectourparks #outdoors #exploretheworld #ourplanet #newsupdate #news #developing #developingnews #missing #help #grandcanyon #grandcanyonnationalpark #aznews #arizona

Here we go again. Within a week I’ve seen reports of two men vandalizing rock formations at Lake Mead, four people in North Carolina pulling bear cubs out of a tree so they could take selfies with them, and now this. For everyone out there who continues to derisively ask, “Why all the gatekeepers? Who are you to tell me what I can and can’t do?”, this is why. It would be nice if that wasn’t the case, but behaving like a responsible adult is apparently too high a hurdle for many people. So there need to be gatekeepers, and there need to be serious fines and penalties for the overgrown children who can’t behave themselves. #nationalparks #nps #findyourpark #nationalpark #opoutside #protectourparks #outdoors #nativeamerican #newmexico #petroglyph #petroglyphnationalmonument #rockart #archaeology #mogollon #newmexicolife #anthropology #treadlightly #leaveonlyfootprints

As we continue our #NationalParkWeek stories, we spotlight Ted Stout, who has devoted 32 years to the National Park Service, enriching sites like Independence National Historical Park, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Mount Rainier National Park, Craters of the Moon National Monument & Preserve, and Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Ted's deep commitment to preserving and understanding our natural landscapes shines through in his adventurous spirit and relentless pursuit of conservation. “Craters of the Moon National Monument was the first unit in the National Park System to be designated as wilderness under the 1964 Wilderness Act. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act, six staff and partners followed the Great Rift across the broad expanse of lava that makes up these NPS units in 2014. Expedition members quickly learned why very few folks have willingly traversed this route. Waves of rough stone ripped at their boots, blistered feet, and slowed progress. The wind blew incessantly and water, always a concern in this parched country, was an especially scarce commodity due to a dry winter. Fortunately, there was just enough ice and snow hidden in deep cracks and caves to sustain the group. Along the 60-mile traverse, the group made many observations and discoveries. They marked the location of more than 15 newly discovered caves and observed a wide variety of flora and fauna. Although early in the season, 32 different wildflower species were observed blooming - a splash of color across the dark lava. Healthy herds of elk and pronghorn and a variety of bird species including great horned owl, sage grouse and numerous songbirds were observed. Especially impressive were the kipukas, vegetated islands of older lava rock surrounded by younger lava, which serve as a refuge for native plants and animals. These areas also provided refuge for the weary “Rifters” as they sought out a place to rest in the evenings. During the last week of April some of the "Rifters" will be heading out across the lava once again to celebrate the Centennial of Craters of the Moon National Monument and the enduring wilderness of this special place...” - Ted Stout

Thank you all so very much for the lovely birthday wishes. This is the last year of my 30s, and honestly, I still think life is for living and learning, and age is what you make of it. It was a long day of disappearing, and believe me, I needed it in my soul. We made our way west and began a week long journey. Today we took my kiddo to one of my favorite places on earth and then we went swimming and ate cheap noodle soup because that’s how we afford adventures in Joe Biden’s America. Truth be told, I don’t know any man as blessed as me. Even in the hard times, I have some real support and today’s adventure is part of that lifelong journey with @happilyinflicting. No offense ya’ll, but if I had to tell you the honest truth, my world revolves around her and one little boy. Sorry for disappearing, but the heart wants what it wants. #protectourparks #optoutside #basinandrange #extraterrestrial #cathedralgorgestatepark #valleyoffirestatepark #littleloveofmylife #myfavoritehiker

What’s described as “countless cases” of vandalism and damage have forced the partial closure of highly trafficked trails in New Mexico’s Petroglyph National Monument, effective April 29.

Mt. Rainier National Park is home to the tallest mountain in Washington. This mountain is also a dormant volcano. Mt. Rainier is 14,411 feet tall. Mt. Rainier is an absolutely stunning mountain. Especially with its prominence and how it towers over the area. It is also home to trail that was this year's trail madness winner, Skyline Trail! Mt. Rainier is home to marmots, deer, mountain goats, mountain lions, bobcats, and black bears! We got lucky to see a lot of these animals and saw the footprints of a mountain lion! I would highly suggest a visit to this park and amazing mountain!! #nationalparktrips #nationalparkgeek #nationalparkweek #mtrainiernationalpark #mtrainier #themountainisout #themountainiscalling #washington #volcano #stratovolcano #wildlife #nps #hiking #skylinetrail #paradisevisitorscenter #leavenotrace #protectourparks #adventureisoutthere

📍A lone rock and its trail are seen on the Racetrack playa at Death Valley National Park, California Hottest, Driest and Lowest National Park: In this below-sea-level basin, steady drought and record summer heat make Death Valley a land of extremes. Yet, each extreme has a striking contrast. Towering peaks are frosted with winter snow. Rare rainstorms bring vast fields of wildflowers. Lush oases harbor tiny fish and refuge for wildlife and humans. Despite its morbid name, a great diversity of life thrives in Death Valley. - National Park Service ↟↟ 📸 NPS ✨ Share your photos by tagging @nationalparknews #nationalparknews  #nationalparks  #nps #findyourpark #nationalpark #getoutside #adventure #explore #exploremore #exploretheworld #ourplanet #nature #naturelovers #naturelover #naturegram #naturephotography #protectourparks #outdoors #exploremore #travel #beautiful #parks #deathvalley #deathvalleynationalpark #deathvalleynp #california #visitcalifornia #racetrackplaya #amazing #wow

A dead 13-foot long sawfish washed ashore in Everglades National Park, the fourth confirmed sawfish death this year alone.  Officials say people started to report fish spinning abnormally in the Florida Keys in the fall, with the first deaths observed in January. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the whirling and mortalities could be related, but it’s not confirmed. The FWC, the National Park Service, and NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service are working together to try to figure out what’s wrong.  If you observe abnormal behaviors in sawfish or other species, or dead sawfish, please report it by phone or email: ☎️: 1-844-4SAWFISH 📧: [email protected] Reporting promptly helps authorities aid sick animals and study diseases that may be impacting wildlife. pc: NPS #nationalparknews  #nationalparks #nps #findyourpark #nationalpark #getoutside #adventure #explore #exploremore #parks #protectourparks #outdoors #exploretheworld #ourplanet #newsupdate #news #visitflorida #florida #floridanews #everglades #evergladesnationalpark #sawfish #fish #mystery

CAMP npca 🤩🌎🏕️ #ad Happy National Park Week! 🤩 I had the absolute best time hanging with @npcapics in Pinnacles National Park 💫 The most awesome group of people came together to have a great day in the park! Here’s what we did: 🥾 hiked the Bear Gulch Reservoir trail ✂️ had a rock paper scissors tournament 🏞️ played national park trivia games 🦅 hiked the condor gulch trail & we saw 3 California Condors! 🤩 We had our mascot, Connor the Condor spending time with us all day! ✨ he was such a star! ⭐️ The best part? It was everyone coming together as strangers & leaving as friends! ❤️ Coming together in national parks is so important because ⬇️ 🌲 It fosters a sense of appreciation for nature & conservation efforts. 🥾 It promotes physical & mental well-being 🦅 National parks serve as valuable educational resources, offering insights into biodiversity, ecology, and the importance of preserving natural habitats. 🏞️ These spaces often hold cultural and historical significance, allowing people to connect with their heritage and the land. I fully support npca because they work tirelessly to protect and preserve America’s national parks, ensuring they remain places of natural beauty and cultural significance for generations to come. 🧡 @npcapics advocates for policies that safeguard these precious landscapes, fights against threats like pollution and overdevelopment, and works to expand the park system. Happy Earth day 2024. The Earth has given us Gardenias to enjoy, along with our lives, our parks, our rainforests, our wildlife, our oceans, rivers, and lakes. As we deal with more climate change related weather disasters and storms, it is imperative to realize how important climate change is. If we can’t depend on a government to look after its planet or environment, we have to look after it ourselves. Regenerative farming is key to protecting our earth’s soil, and eliminating or lessening fossil fuel emissions is essential to protecting our planet, and its livelihoods. #stopplasticpollution #happyearthday🌎 #gardenia #ourplanet #earth #regenerativefarming #kissthesoil #climatechangeisreal #protectouroceans #protectourplanet #protectourrainforests #protectourparks #protectourwildlife #stopplasticpollution #nature #flowers

She’s back! The beloved Grizzly 399 has emerged from hibernation in Grand Teton National Park, according to Cowboy State Daily. She's considered the world's most famous wild bear and has been dubbed the "Queen of the Tetons." She has had tremendous success raising cubs in the Wyoming wilderness and continues to do so. During her recent sighting, the newspaper reports she was exploring with her large cub from a previous season, "Spirit".     Grizzly 399 is believed to be 28 years old, which is considered old for wild grizzlies. Most don't make it into their 30s. Wildlife experts are confident she'll live long enough to raise Spirit until he is old enough to set out on his own.  pc 1: @vangophotos via Cowboy State Daily (showing 399 and Spirit last Fall) pc 2: Jorn Vangoidtsenhoven via Cowboy State Daily (showing new tracks from 399 and her cub) #nationalparknews  #nationalparks #nps #findyourpark #nationalpark #getoutside #adventure #explore #exploremore #parks #protectourparks #outdoors #exploretheworld #ourplanet #newsupdate #news #yay #goodnews #uplifting #grizzly399 #399 #grandtetonnationalpark #grandtetonnp #wyoming #visitwyoming #jacksonhole

If you haven’t noticed, we love the outdoors and connecting with nature. Every effort must be taken to preserve the majesty of the Earth for future generations so the connection doesn’t end with us. Hidden among the trees, or in the mountains, is a world of beauty and majesty just waiting to be honored & respected. Industrial advances are a necessity for society but Earth Day was originally instituted to raise awareness of the environmental impact of that growth — we can’t forget that. On this Earth Day, we encourage you to remember the little things you can do to protect our world. 🫶🏻 Send this to someone who you’d want by your side while exploring & honoring our world. Happy Earth Day! If there's any day to learn about how the changing climate is impacting our treasured landscapes, it's today. Last month, NPCA released our "Polluted Parks" report, which found that 97% of national parks are suffering from concerning levels of air pollution. National parks are home to some of America’s most iconic landscapes and best-preserved cultural and historic sites, and these places need clean air and a healthy climate to flourish. Yet air pollution and climate change remain some of the most serious threats to the health of our parks today — and the problems they cause include weakening the health of plants and animals, permanently harming ecosystems and negatively affecting visitors’ health and enjoyment. Comment "Earth Day" to receive more information and steps to take to #ProtectOurParks. 📍 Sequoia National Park, one of the national parks most at risk from air pollution in this country 📸 (c) Kwiktor | Dreamstime.com
