Friday nights growing up usually meant appetizer night with my mom and brother, where we’d bake a bunch of frozen appetizers, microwave popcorn and have a picnic in my mom’s bed while watching TGIF shows or a movie. Tonight’s dinner is the grown up ode to those memories. Instead of mozzarella sticks and Bagel Bites, I made a cheese board with some of the @labelleiloise conservas we purchased in Paris (tuna mousse with basil and pollock rillettes with Szechuan peppercorn), along with cheese, stuffed goat peppers, truffle macron almonds, gherkin pickles and crackers from @venissimo. For the cheeses, I asked the Venissimo staff for two cheeses that pair well with conservas (canned fish), and she nailed it out of the park with the ones she picked for me. On the left is a Pecora Nocciola — a pecorino-style, sheep’s milk cheese — and on the right is the Quadrello di Bufala — a semisoft cheese that uses the same recipe as Taleggio, with buffalo milk instead of cow milk. Spent the day museum hopping in Berlin with my husband, followed by a bit of a splurge on chocolate bars from the @rittersport flagship store. I love how Berlin is such a large, cosmopolitan city without feeling overwhelming, touristy and crowded like Paris. California needs to jump onboard with this razor clam life. I’ve only ever had them in Europe, but every time I do, they’re one of my favorite parts of the meal. I normally do not like eel, in large part because the idea of eating snake-like creatures freaks me out, but I loved this smoked eel dish from @restaurant.eels last night. These morsels of smoked eel were served with licorice, chopped apples, hazelnuts and a roasted butter sauce. Celebrated New Year’s Eve with a quiet night at home with Peter eating dinner with champagne followed by watching fireworks from our bedroom window at midnight. I’ve been friends with @alyssajean for 8 years, and during that time, she evolved from being my casual stalker (following me while walking to a Lindy hop event that they weren’t sure on directions on) to one of my closest friends. Early on in our friendship, we used to hang out watching @sayyes_tlc, and as we snacked and chatted through the episodes, it became apparent that eventually, I would need her by my side as a bridesmaid at my wedding. We had such a nice relaxing couple of days last weekend, complete with a trip to @cabetospops on Sunday. This is such a cool concept: you pick your popsicle flavor, then they dip it in your choice of milk, dark or white chocolate and dust it with toppings. I got a strawberry popsicle dipped in dark chocolate dressed in a s’mores coating. It was a delicious way to cool down during the the hot afternoon, and they even toasted the marshmallows! I normally try to go out for seafood whenever I travel to the east coast, and always request crab cakes when I’m in Maryland, but this time I made my own. Picked up a pound of blue crab meat from @annapolisseafood over the weekend, and made a pile of crab cakes for dinner Wednesday night. I don’t have better pics because they were gone before I knew it — even my dad, who doesn’t like crab cakes, ate some! 🦀 This has been the most trying, emotional trip of my life, but I’m very happy with how much progress my dad has made over the last two weeks, post-surgery. Leaving tomorrow will be bittersweet, but at least I get to see my him again in two weeks at my wedding! Also, whenever I travel to or think of Annapolis, I think of the jingle one group in elementary school wrote for an assignment. Each group had to write a song for a state to present while learning the capitals, (the only words had to be the capital and state). Cold nights call for spicy beef birria and quesadillas. 🍲 Cooked the chuck roast from our @thewiseoxsd butcher’s box for tonight’s dinner throughout the day in the crockpot, and was so excited to eat it after smelling the birria cook all day.

I couldn’t decide between bulgogi or crab fried rice, so I combined the two for the best of both worlds as a #surfnturf dinner. First, I thinly sliced steaks from our @thewiseoxsd Butcher Box and marinated them over night in a mixture of roasted sesame oil, brown sugar, soy sauce, ginger, garlic, red pepper flakes, grated pear and onions. Peter steamed a batch of rice this afternoon, and I fried it with onions, peas, carrots and egg as I cooked the bulgogi beef topping. I spent most of my life thinking I hated spaghetti squash. Whenever we had it growing up, I just wanted real pasta, plus I really didn’t like the texture. It has been at least 20 years since I’ve had one, so when we got a spaghetti squash in our @sagemountainfarm CSA box last week I accepted the challenge of trying it again. I’m glad we got this squash, because it was much better than I remembered it, and the texture didn’t freak me out like it used to. I dressed it with olive oil, fresh cracked black pepper and @maldonsalt, then roasted it at 400° until it was golden brown — about 30 minutes. We ordered the inaugural box of meat to try it out the new @thewiseoxsd, but I can see us signing up for a monthly subscription! All the cuts included in the box are things we’d normally buy anyway (Chuck roast, bratwurst, Italian sausages, ground beef, carne asada, a whole chicken and steak), and the flavors of the pre-marinated meats (chicken with lemon and thyme, and crane asada) were well balance and not overpowering or salty. So far, it has all been amazing food! I haven’t been posting to Instagram or taking many photos over the past few weeks because I’ve been trying to relax and enjoy the post-wedding life with my newly minted husband. If I knew this was going to be one of my last Friday nights out at a restaurant before the pandemic and California’s stay-at-home order, I would’ve ordered a steak instead of the smorgasbord of happy hour appetizers we ate @bornandraisedstk that night. It’s really strange looking at photos from my pre-pandemic life, where we ate out way too often, but enjoyed it every time. Since mid-March I’ve only dined out twice — both times at outdoor venues with more than adequate distance between tables — and I’ve only had one glass of wine. As someone who is chronically afflicted with wanderlust, I miss traveling, dining out and adventuring without the constant fear of getting sick. Tonight I decided to walk down memory lane and look at photos from trips past, including one to Prague in January 2019. Dinner @fieldrestaurant was one of the best meals I’ve ever had. It was my first Michelin Star-rated restaurant, and I was completely blown away by each of the many courses.
