It was a bit early in the year for the sea birds we see in Orkney in the summer months so this scene was quite different from the last visit we had back in July. In the summer I sat and watched the Arctic Terns but this time only a couple of Black backed gulls and the odd Oyster Catcher flew past the cliffs. As a teenager, when I was in a troubled time, I used to draw myself on a #Scottish #cliff during a #storm. My first #picture on a Scottish #cliff was on the island of #Skye, then on #Yesnaby - #Orkney, #FairIsle and #Hermaness - #Shetland #Dunnottarcastle. In fact, ,when I am a bit down, I'm still used to going to the sea when I'm in #Puglia. When I'm not there... I just wish I was on a cliff to watch the power of the sea, which calms me down. Today’s forecast was meant to be heavy rain all day but a wee check on Met Office this morning showed a wee weather window on West Mainland Orkney so headed there! The west coast of Mainland Orkney is one of the best places to go hiking in the whole of the archipelago - there’s the Yesnaby cliffs, Marwick Head, and the tidal island of Brough of Birsay. Bit late recapping on 2023 but here goes. It was the biggest rollercoaster year I feel I’ve had, it started well, I concluded therapy and felt like the wound from the trauma of Lou’s accident was beginning to heal (maybe a little ignorant/optimistic it would be so easy). Had some good days on the Ben but that ended with an incident that reopened a lot of feelings. I lost a Nan, a best mate and my dad. Never cried so much in a year as grown man, with their passings, as well as the trauma. I got to watch Louise get stronger, get back to climbing and running and more. She’s blown me away with her determination. I ran some sky races which were a truly humbling experience. I found new ways to have fun outdoors. Did some of the most difficult but most rewarding work I’ve ever done which has now come to an end but I’m very grateful to have had the opportunity, so early on in my career as a therapist. With that ending I’m going to have more time and better work life balance. With Louise and her family we went back to Orkney, revisiting the scene of the accident which was both traumatic and healing. We got to meet the lifeboat crew and thank them, genuinely some of the nicest people, who I can never thank enough. I don’t know what this year has in store but I feel in a better place and I hope to find the zest for life I lost in May 22.
Orkney! Rolling hills inland and stark cliffs at the seas edge. We were lucky to have good weather when we visited, around 25 degrees. The only downside was that we only had a day and a night so didn't get to visit any of the surrounding islands. Will definitely be visiting again.
