Slowly but surely I’m getting my Spring flower beds planted out. 9 rows of dahlias have now been dug and divided and put into storage with 5 rows to go. The same beds the dahlias were in previously are then being planted with the seedlings I have grown myself from seed. Planted so far are sweet peas, cornflowers, Iceland poppies, Ladybird poppies,Flanders poppies, Mother of Pearl poppies and ranunculus. Trying some anemones again this year. Last year I didn’t have time to properly prep the new beds I was planting into and my anemones were pretty short stemmed and pretty disappointing. Here’s hoping they’ll fare better this year with a bit more love given to them. I’m not growing in large numbers as I don’t want to give over too much space to them if they fail to impress again. Everything in gardening is trial and error and you never stop learning, that’s what makes it so challenging and interesting at the same time. Ae you growing some this year? I thought I’d share some useful tips for using peat free compost as it behaves differently to anything containing peat ⬇️ 🌱 Check the date of manufacture (should be stamped on the bag): purchase compost as close to the date of manufacture as possible and certainly use it within the same season 🌱 Storage : Keep bags under cover if possible - or protect them from rain (and place bags on a pallet) 🌱 Feeding : Potting compost includes resin coated pellets of fertiliser which are designed to break down after 4-6 weeks of being activated (ie watered). Left longer than this and your plants will either need to be repotted, planted out or fed with something like seaweed solution to get the nutrients they need. 🌱 Slug Eggs? : If you find spheres in your compost which contain a clear or milky liquid when popped, it is not slug eggs. It is the fertiliser starting to break down and means that the compost is getting past its best. 🌱 Watering peat free composts: Water little and often and from the base. And the next one is here 🙌 Only the first photo has accurately captured the colour of Orange Emperor. ➡️ In the sun this appears much more red As you can see thus tall and elegant fosteriana tulip is tangerine to apricot and green on the outside ➡️ and with a yellow base and black anthers on the inside. It’s one of the earliest tulips to come out and joins the purple Negrita Double in the garden. These are both 2023 bulbs planted in pots, stored over the summer and then planted again. This time of year taking pictures of pretty flowers doesn't happen.. The gardens are now put to bed, and we're prepping for Christmas. Confession.. I haven't even shopped yet.. I'm not getting Nana of the year award... I've been cleaning the beds as I can, planting ranunculas, tulips,daffodils, and peonies. I have a ton of dried flowers to deal with.. wreaths maybe?? Working on taxes? Bleh...but must be done.. I have baby flowers growing, so I'm ahead of the game there.. More to sow... I've been making salves and putting up lots of herbs. Canning when I have things to can. I did some decluttering yesterday.. found some photo albums of my children (all grown now), so you know, I lost some time there.. 😅😭 I really, really need to clean my greenhouse where I do all my seed sowing and overwintering of other plants.. it's unheated, so there is that.... Not many days I have nothing to do....I thrive on keeping busy.. The last 2 days have been spent with the 2 oldest granddaughters, which is definitely a priority.. Currently, I am planning how to actually make a profit in my little flower farm. One by stepping out on faith. I think that's. Hurrah it’s done! A frenzy of planting the very last tulips, finished in the dark. No time to prepare more pots this evening so a raised bed was commandeered which should make a nice spring cutting garden. My top tips for tulip planting - which one day I may actually follow: 1) Mark each pot with a plant label or pebble once you’ve finished putting your bulbs in so you don’t forget and start digging them up again three weeks later 2) Make sure your plan for a marvellously orchestrated colour scheme is in fact legible so you are not standing out in the cold and rain trying to decipher it 2) Start earlier. #tulipsplanted #tulipplanting #plantinginthedark #plantingforspring #springgarden

Bulb planting is 90% complete and it feels so good!🌱 This patch was full of cosmos, rubeckia and calendula in the summer for the wedding but now it's been flipped, dug and planted with tulips and daffodils for Spring 2024🌷 I marked out with empty pots where I'd like the dahlias to go next summer and so I knew where to plant the bulbs to save me having to lift them again like this year🌱 (photo 2/3) So I went about digging the holes ready for the bulbs to go in. I've planted the bulbs very closely together, that's just how I've always done my bulb planting🌼 they're in a fairly random way so I'm hoping they'll be pops of colour dotted throughout the bed next year🤞🏻 (photo 3/4) I've put canes in the gaps that have been left for the dahlias just so I can see the spaces over the winter and continue to plan. Sam surprised us and came home for a wee visit. He wanted to learn how to make meatloaf, and plan out some easy meals for when him and @_laceyasuncion are working those 12hr shifts. I was happy to help with meal prep and planning, muffins, meatballs and some roast beef too. Peep the last photo we even made some horseradish fresh from the plant in the garden; spicy spicy clean out your sinuses for sure. Sam helped me by planting all 70 @brecks_bulbs daffodils for next spring in honour of our late grandma. The drill bit that I found @allunderoneroofvendorsmarket worked amazing once Fry fitted it to the drill, made planting a breeze. One of the nice things about working on the front garden is that our neighbors see us doing it. I almost never spend time in the front garden without also spending some time chatting with neighbors who pass by. Everyone has been incredibly kind and made so many encouraging comments, despite the cardboard and tarps all over the lawn, the chaos of our front steps replacement project, and the fact that we can’t keep up with the leaves. It’s good to know that people are watching the garden come along, and that they know we care about it and have plans to improve it. The bulbs in this picture are some that our neighbors dropped off for us. I think they’re crocus? Frost season is upon us and today was one of the last warm days of the year here! Our garlic bulbs came in just in time so straight out they went into the garden! Keeping my fingers crossed for a better harvest next year. I’ve picked up some new tips and tricks that will hopefully help produce a better yield come spring. Tips: 🧄 Start with high-quality garlic that has not been sprayed. Visit farmers markets, snag some from you neighbors, or visit the organic section of the grocery store. Make sure the garlic shows no signs of disease, is firm, and has been cured well. 🧄 Break the bulb apart into cloves. Place your garlic cloves into the ground, flat side down, pointed side up, spaced 4-6 inches apart. 🧄 Backfill the soil in the trench so that it is level and then cover with a mulch like straw or leaves. You will want 3 to 4-inches of mulch to insulate your bulbs through the winter. 🧄 Hold off on the water. There should be enough moisture in the soil to promote root growth. Watering can rot the cloves in the ground. When we weren’t emptying the laundry basket of rain water from the soggy fireplace we have been potting up tubs for spring. Each bulb tucked under the moss feels like the planting of hope. We moved bricks, putting up pictures and painting shelves after the children’s bedtime -all fuelled by scrambled eggs on toast, coffee and left over chocolate tart from the weekend before last. The rain has turned the garden into something rather sloppy. I learnt the hard way that potting up a bulb lasagne for a friend, plonking it in the boot and then driving around a few Lincolnshire S bends means that on arrival, alliums and china pinks roll amongst the dog leads and spare bags. We have embraced the slower, less carfuffled mornings without school for a week. Swapping looking for a missing shoe to instead eating our porridge next to lit candles. I taught the children how to lay a fire and how to strike a match and we have baked and walked and debated over who’s turn it is next to pick up the lego and put the sofa back together again from being a fort. Then, just as we got excited to see family and with a cake in the biscuit tin for friends, our daughter spiked a temperature and we have lain low ever since, her brother bringing back a spare party bag whilst she slept under a blanket. Our last arrangements of the season 😞. We did three Random Acts of Kindness for the hospital, Cardinal and Oakwood nursing homes and our weekly arrangement for the Cedar Oak bride’s suite. We are turning our full focus to planting for Spring! Today we soaked and pre-sprouted 400 anemone corms — a first-time flower for us — and 600 rannuculus corms including almost 200 saved from last year! We also planted more hearty annual seeds — bells of Ireland and calendula. We will get all of our seedlings in the ground before the freeze next week 🤞. Yesterday we planted two more rows of crimson clover cover crop. Lots more to do before Thanksgiving break! Can you replant last year’s bulbs? Yes you can!! 😄 Some of us don’t have the luxury of a garden or that many pots in which to plant summer and autumn displays. So we have to lift our bulbs once they have finished flowering - having first taken off the dead flowers and waited for the leaves to die back - If you had to lift your bulbs after they flowered last year and have been storing them somewhere cool and dark, check them over to ensure they look and feel in good shape before re-planting. Discard any that feel soft or rotten. Put a pinch of bulbstarter rootgrow at the bottom of their new planting holes and get planting! The performance might not be as good as last year’s, so perhaps add some new ones to supplement the display. Then water, put some grit on the top, cover with wire or netting if you have a squirrel 🐿️ issue, raise off the ground and go and make a nice brew to congratulate yourself! After the unpredictable and often extreme weather this season it was both relieving and surprising to get a dry spell in October to plant a few more crops for winter and early spring out in the fields 🌱🌱🌱 These spring greens, endives and Pak Choi were meant to be planted quite a few weeks ago but we haven’t had dry enough conditions since early September. We almost gave up on them but kept them going and eventually their day came. We have broard beans, garlic and Polytunnel crops still to plant but this feels like a step in the farms steps towards winter.
