After painting and sketching as a hobby for a couple years, when I finally started doing it more professionally, one question kept popping up. Why did I study literature if eventually, I resort to painting to make money? What about all those years of education, those innumerable term papers, my master's degree, my Mphil thesis? What about all the books I've read, all the theories I've argued about, all the poetry that have kept me awake at night? Why on earth did I waste my time on them? It has taken me a long time to find an answer, but finally I have an idea. Nothing we learn, is ever lost. It peeks out in innumerable ways. It becomes a part of who we are, regardless of what we do professionally. It becomes a part of our personhood, our identity. It helps us figure out how we fit into this unimaginably large and chaotic world. It is because I've studied literature for so many years and with such passion, that so much of my sensibilities are the way they are. It's why I think of J Alfred Prufrock while watching evening descend. It's why I feel like Clarissa Dalloway every time I buy flowers. It's why I thought of representating a heart as an "obadhyo meye" when I wanted to paint something for my own home. Regardless of where I am and what I do, what I learnt from literature, what I felt through it, will always be a part of me. Just like what I now learn from art, both the passion and the technicalities... They'll stay with me as well and inspire me to live life better. Unlike what this utilitarian world teaches us, what we learn is not meant to be used only for profit, for money. It is also meant to be used to learn how to live. from my early works | "Tuż przy drzwiach stoją moje nie obute stopy i żebrzą" (Eng. Right by the door stand my unshod feet and are begging), 2014 self-portrait (November 29, 2014) location: patio of my house (Dallas, TX, US) Today, I'm thinking about hunger; my own hunger that I choose deliberately when regularly, I stop eating for three days every month, and the forced hunger of thousands of people in the world that have no choice. This photograph was taken in an extreme health condition where, actually, I was barely able to stand on my own feet after a prolonged period of being food deprived. It gave birth to my self-portrait, though. Something was born out of my hunger, whereas the forced hunger called famine can only bring death. PS. Over the years, I tamed hunger. I'm almost at the end of my photo dump of the highest quality 😊 Here I look rather moody, but I will appear sunnier in my next and final post from this shoot! Our first music video is coming together beautifully and should be released this week!! 🎉🎉 My only clues as to which song it will be are that it references walking through a storm and was brought to public attention in the 1956 movie musical "Carousel."
