Spotlight on PHOEBE WAGNER 🍻 Phoebe Wagner returns to Catford Mews to present ‘(Pub)lic House’, a film about empty pubs in Croydon, made of interviews edited into poems, maps into animations and words written by the community. Pubs across Croydon have been boarded up, abandoned and left to be empty. Phoebe remembers growing up in them. Roger (her Dad) remembers playing music in them since the early 90s. Together they go on a pub crawl across Croydon asking 3 questions: “What happened in these pubs, what are they now and what could they become?”. Aunque hayan ensayado por meses juntos y ella haya confiado en que él estaría ahí cumpliendo, siendo compañía, para después darse cuenta de que no iba a ser así. Aunque haya llorado la decepción, aunque haya temido al ridículo y no haya querido salir y la hayan tenido que convencer un tanto. ‘shine your icy crown’ is the second volume of poetry in the ‘you are your own fairytale’ series written by amanda lovelace aka @ladybookmad . it came across the check-in desk at the library where i work and i immediately checked it back out for myself. i have enjoyed lovelace’s poetry in the past, so reading this one was a no-brainer. it had to happen. i suspected i would like this book right around the time i read the dedication — ‘for every girl who’s ever been called a bitch for speaking her mind. so, like, every girl.’ as someone who has personally been on the receiving end of that word a time or ten, that sentiment sang and many of the poems that followed felt equally relatable. i also loved the delicate, whimsical illustrations that are scattered throughout the book, which enhanced its overall appeal with soft pops of color. the collection is divided into three sections. i enjoyed all of them, but my favorite section was the first, which contain a series of related poem sets. the poem on the left-hand page touches on toxic stereotypes, unrealistic expectations, and other issues that women and girls face, while the poem on the right-hand page offers encouragement, wisdom, insight, and sisterly advice. it is clear that lovelace understands hard times and big feelings, and i loved the fearless way her poems empower and inspire women, while challenging societal expectations and romantic stereotypes. her poem are easy to understand (but not basic) and filled with feminist prose that offers valuable insight and important life lessons. i know poetry may not be everyone’s bag, but these poems will undoubtedly resonate with a lot of women. in my case, i felt seen. 📚full review + poetry samples + content warning ➡️🔗in b!o. ❓pretend you are writing the dedication for your soon-to-be bestselling novel. what would you write? #bookstagram #shineyouricycrown #poetry #poems #bookreview #andrewsmcmeel #ladybookmad #amandalovelace #booklover #bookaddict #bookworm #bookish #poetsofbookstagram #readersofbookstagrm #feministpoetry

Sor Juana, The Dream or El Seuño or Primero Sueño (1690) : My true idol if only I am worthy of her! 😞🙂↕️ Sor (Sister) Juana Inéz de la Cruz (1648-95), a Hieronymite nun, writing in New Spain was the greatest and first feminist of the Western hemisphere and most illustrious poetess of the Baroque period. A heretic? Yes and No!! The Spanish-speaking, male-dominated Americas lacked democracy and liberalism. It was based more on timidity, intolerance, and rampant misogyny promoted by the ecclesiastical hierarchy between genders. In Response to the Most Illustrious Poetess Sor Filotea de la Cruz, Sor Juana defends her freedom to express that LITERATURE held the hightest status in human life and critiques the restrictions placed on women's intellectual development. She won't be silenced!! "What...in the devil in my being a woman?" The Dream is written in the silva form. This is a scholar and a philosopher writing a poem (see opening lines) who reads Greek, Latin, and other Romance languages and trained to dabble with : Aristotle, Cicero, Maimonides, Averröes, Abelard, Scipio, Kircher, Kepler, Kabbalah, Plotinus, Dante, Thomism, Gnosticism, etc. A life dedicated to philosophy and poetic expression! The Dream is inspired by the Neoplatonist Macrobius' 5 categories of dreams: phantasmal, oracular, prophetic/visionary, enigmatic, & insomniac. Literary QUESTS were shaped around prophetic and oracular. They've a structure of a "pyramidal" Anabasis (moving upward) like Dante's Divine Comedy and later Bidungsroman. A lost soul "attempting to ascend and touch the Stars." The poem depicts the soul's journey towards transcendence revising the concept of the Catholic Church, blending in the process, beliefs derived from the Aztecs and native Mexican peoples!
