Ever thought about pressing pause each day? How often do you create time for yourself so that you can just pause for a short period of time? It doesn’t have to be for too long but it’s so important to give your brain time to switch off. Life for all of us can be very busy, juggling so many aspects of our lives. You can feel like you’re constantly running and it’s difficult to slow down. Our brain can then become overloaded, overworked creating lots of stress hormones. This can then sometimes lead to stress, anxiety, to you feeling overwhelmed. Your sleep can also be impacted too. I know it sounds simple but pressing pause each day can be invaluable. Get out of the office, get a coffee but don’t look at your phone while you’re queuing, just take in the world around you. Alternatively go out for a short walk, enjoying the landscape and all that you see. Make a cup of tea and sit down for 5 or 10 mins. While you’ve quietly ‘paused’ your parasympathetic nervous system activates which helps us calm down. Did you know that it can help make you more focused and productive by doing this? Sometimes it's about making choices that prioritize you and your individual health, wellness and happiness over doing something that you feel pressured to get done. Self-care is essential. Today’s class we pressed pause with a warm cup of herbal fruit tea 🍉 🍎 🍍 🍓 Breathing gently and taking some mindful sensing sips of tea 🍵. We all know how to breathe!! But how often are we really aware of it happening? When we’re anxious or fearful our breath gets fast, so if we’re calm it follows that our breath would be slower and gentler. Today’s class was about mindfulness of breath and our tea drinking experience was a great place to start. What would life be like if it came with a pause button? One of the most facinating things I learnt during my breathwork teacher training was about the vagus nerve and it's connection to the parasympathetic nervous system. The vagus nerve is a bundle of nerves that extends from the brain stem down through the torso and abdomen branching out to the heart, lungs, stomach and intestines. The vagus nerve connects your brain to your ‘gut brain’ also known as enteric nervous system. Stimulating the vagus nerve through meditation and breathwork increases vagal tone which has been correlated through academic research to regulate stress responses. This has been shown to also have beneficial effects on psychiatric and gastrointestinal disorders such as; PTSD, IBS, chronic inflammation and depression. The communication between the brain and the gut-brain via the vagus nerve is responsible for anxiety or fear responses and when we conduct deep breathing, the vagus nerve acts as a brake in the stress response with respiratory biofeedback (control of physiological responses) through the breath. Through these practices, our vagus nerve helps us to respond better by quickly meeting the needs of our stress response. The vagus nerve and its connection to activating our parasympathetic nervous system goes to show how powerful breathwork and meditation practices can me! You know how Staples has the “Easy” button? I want you to create a “Pause” button for yourself. Maybe that’s in the form of a post-it note or a reminder on your phone that says "Pause" that you schedule at various times throughout the day. ⏸ A pause can be a walk around the block, 10 minutes of meditation or journaling to write down your feelings, listening to relaxing music for a few minutes; depending on where you are it could be exercising or stretching. 🚶🏼‍♀️ Taking time to pause will increase your energy and mental capacity to get through your to-do list. To mindfully pause is to interrupt your automatic reactions to life’s events and become aware and conscious of what’s happening and give yourself the power to choose how you want to react.   😍 Of course, for emotional eaters, pausing creates the space to consciously and mindfully eat, or not. It allows you the moment to ask yourself, am I hungry? What am I feeling? I needed a break, so I took one... Sometimes when life throws me a curveball, I freeze and get knocked out by it. Love, love this marketing campaign ran by @mindcharity which encourages us to pause for a moment. I often think as ‘creatives’ we’re the lucky ones - mindfulness comes relatively easy for us. We can day dream really easily, get lost in the pure wonder of nature and having a creative talent enables us to fully disconnect from a confusing and fast world. It doesn’t mean we escape though - quite the opposite, a creative talent if often a trade off and if you think of the ‘greats’ in history, Vincent van Gough, the Romantic Poets and writers, ground breaking scientists - their phenomenal creativity often came at a cost with invariably emotional turmoil and mental health. We’ve all heard the expression tortured artist haven’t we? Pregnant or Ulcerative Colitis?! 🤷🏼‍♀️ It’s definitely the latter, no 👶🏼 in there!!! . So today instead of posting something taken on a different day when I felt well, this is the real me at the present moment. . Not feeling particularly happy, in a lot of pain and absolutely exhausted from losing so much blood. Ulcerative Colitis is a chronic, incurable inflammatory bowel disease that causes ulcers to form on the inside lining of the digestive tract. Not only do we bloat like seen in the above picture, UC causes internal bleeding & sharp stabbing sensations which result in a lot of pain, terrible fatigue, weight loss & increases the risk of getting colon cancer. Even though life is pretty damn wonderful a lot of the time, it’s okay to have illnesses, imperfections, to have bad mental days and to just spend the day in bed... EVEN in the holiday period. A Mini Mindfulness practice that can be done anytime, anywhere, always bringing us back to the present moment 🌸 I suggested this type of practice to a child I’m supporting when he told me that when he’s finished his work in class and is waiting for everyone else to finish (he’s a fast worker!) he makes a mental list of what he’s going to do in the summer break. Man have I missed my fluro... October is mental health month, and what better way to round that off with an intimate little free the funk sesh on the beaches of southern Sri Lanka. As most people know, mental health is a topic close to my heart and I’ve had the privilege of working alongside both @onewaveisallittakes and @batyraus, reminding us to #presspauseformentalhealth. For me, it’s getting in the ocean, soaking up the sun, and finding a way to just move. You cannot serve from an empty vessel, so remember to take time for YOU.

As mental health week comes to an end can I please encourage you to be reminded of what keeps you happy. Sometimes on my darkest days I have to sit down for a second and remember that through the chaos of this scary world, my best friend has given me the most beautiful nephew. Continue to count your blessings and celebrate your achievements, life is too short to take for granted.
