Time to step out of my comfort zone. That’s what I did when I got invited to join a Ragnar team in 2016. Fast forward to 8 years later and looking back I’ve joined many road teams, trail teams, ultra teams… That’s me at Ragnar Tahoe Trail last summer. I get nervous at the start. Every. Single. Time. But it all goes away as soon as I take off. I mean, how can you still be nervous when you’re taking in all these views?! Ragnar Trail challenges. How it started ➡️ how it's going. 7,000 feet above the sea 1,400 feet of elevation gain 16 women 15.5 miles 10 times I cried about my hip 9 mosquito bites 8 glamping tents 7 times I swore I'd drop 6 layers of blister bandages 🎶 5 SHOTS OF TEQUILA 🎶 4 canopies 3 years in the planning 2 full teams operating as... 1 BADASS TEAM of TaHoes and TaHors! Taking Tahoe Trail Ragnar by (dust)storm! Come hell or high water.... and BEARS. On a different note, I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize to the team. I floated through this race on an unconventional blend of pain relief. I was not present. I was not a teammate. I was a drain on others. I was a burden. Emotionally and physically. I was seeking escape from the prison that is this season's version of my body. The wolf has returned, and lil Red Lolohood is stuck inside again. Trapped inside a body that betrays my athlete's heart. Flailing inside a mind that's swimming in trauma, grief, and fear. Some version of me showed up. And, frankly, she wasn't enough. You might say whatever I could give in the moment was enough. That however I showed up was still showing up and was a win in itself..... etc. I promise you, it was not. A part of me is still out there in the dark woods on that green loop, sobbing and scared. Terrified of the shadows and demons in my head. Afraid to move forward. Afraid to stand still. Afraid to be seen. Afraid to turn around. Afraid I won't be a strong captain, as I just failed at being a strong teammate. @reallyryandi There was not a single other person I needed more to hold my shaking hand, tears streaming, body screaming. Thank you for things I can't even put into words. To everyone who fielded my tears, fears, and frustrations in the wee hours during and after the green loop, thank you, and I'm sorry. We earn medals for HARD. Even when we feel like we didn't do the work to earn it. We all worked through something. This Medal Monday is dedicated to these BAMRs who said “yes!” I am so incredibly thankful and blessed to call these ladies my friends. We’ve been waiting 2 years to do this @ragnarrelay race and didn’t let the dang ‘vid stop us! One teammate had to drop just a few days before and another was still recovering and almost dropped. I had a small panic for about a minute until my amazing teammates stepped up and said “we’ll cover the extra loops!” This was no small task. Remember we live at sea level here. Tahoe Trail starts at 7,000 feet elevation and then we run up over 1,000 feet more- multiple times!! I have to brag on my team of “masters age division” ladies who placed 2nd in our category!! We may be getting older but we are growing stronger. Thank you ladies from the bottom of my heart. What a weekend of true grit and determination, a little sleep and a lot of laughs. Way to go “Wrong Way Rossi”, “Going to gear store to buy a new tank to match my shorts Tins”, “Kings Hawaiian bread and fully prepared with chargers and more Deana”, “New to trail running Cindy”, “Double loops Tamra”(notice she is holding 2 medals she earned because she was basically 2 runners), and “Kind Bar Pusher Fatma” 🤣 I smile as I keep remembering more and more from the weekend.
