It's dominated by musky notes that dissipate revealing a Chinese 5 spice-inflicted aromatics with cherries, pomegranate, and red plums. It opens further with dried orange peel, dried rose petals, autumnal leaves mixed with humid soil, smoked meats, and truffles. It's structured on the palate with a warm sappy texture. The wines all came from the cellar of the late Clive Coates MW. It was a fantastic evening with a great lineup and made even better by the knowledge of Jasper Morris MW. “WOTN for me was the Rene Engel Brulees, it was showing amazingly. Outstanding nose, perfumed, minerality. Very smooth, long finish, beautiful fruit! The Rene Engel’s were the most drinkable. The Meo Camuzet and Hudelot Noellat wines were a cut above the rest, really loved the Brulees by Meo. Richebourg’s were all great, truly showing why they are Richebourg. Hudelot needs more time, Grivot got better as the night went on and I personally loved the Anne Gros. _ Superb Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Aux Brulees 2002 from Domaine Rene Engel Absolutely singing with a wonderful complex nose and palate and a peacock’s tail. This is what a beautiful pinot noir is all about.. * Score : 95 Point * Drink : Now~2040+ * Comment : Collectable * Surface : 1.05ha in ownership * Age of vines : Planted in 1949 * Winery information Domaine René Engel was one of the leading lights of Vosne-Romanée until the tragic death of Philippe Engel, grandson of the founder, in 2005. Philippe took over the domaine on the early death of his father Pierre in 1981. However he continued to benefit from the advice of his legendary grandfather, René Engel, for several years, though occasionally having to ban him from the cellar when his interventions were becoming too intrusive. By the early 1990s he had established his reputation for making exceptionally delicious wines. He had a light hand with extraction, preferring to emphasise the natural qualities of the fruit, supported by the judicious use of new oak – rarely more than 50% except for the grand crus in exceptional vintages. The wines were fine and elegant, deceptively approachable when young though capable of long ageing. Perhaps the heyday of Philippe’s period in charge was around 1992 and 1993, by which time he had fully found his style and was running the domaine with energy and passion. The flagship of the 6 hectare domaine was a wonderful Clos Vougeot from near the top of the Clos, along with a very fine Grands Echezeaux. These were supported by a third grand cru, Echezeaux, premier cru Vosne Romanée Les Brulées and a delicious village Vosne Romanée. It seemed to vary according to the year which of Clos de Vougeot and Grands Echézeaux turned out to be the finest wine. Both were usually outstanding, and a clear cut ahead of the Echézeaux. The Clos came from a single plot, very well situated on the upper-mid slopes just south of the chateau itself. Shame on me 😔 I only wrote 2 tasting notes in the whole of last year. Guess it means a low bar to cross in 2024 😉 That said, it’s really hard starting this writing engine from cold standstill. Almost 3 decades on, this 1996 Brûlées remains fresh, vibrant, sensual. She possesses both youthful vitality and maturity; she’s so easy to fall in love with, yet has developed a charming personality that is likely to continue evolving over the decade. I guess this was Philippe Engel’s genius. Cherries, blueberries, Asian sourplums, tea leaves and earth tones on the palate. Not characteristically spicy for a Vosne. A dash of marine salinity. Aromatically open once popped, but continues to tease & unravel over the next 2 hours - violets, earth, stones, and Asian spices. Floral accents dominate. Medium-bodied, slight minerality with a long lingering finish. Intoxicating, not just because of alcohol. The 1999 Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Brulées by Domaine Rene Engel is truly superb; among all the 1999s from Rene Engel, it might be the very best produced by Domaine. The modern, bright ruby colour, despite being 24 years old, exhibits no signs of age. The aromatics are vibrant, youthful, and clean, offering a blend of flinty minerals with cranberries, red currants, and sweet strawberries, scented with cayenne pepper and a hint of citrus, alongside aged balsamic vinegar. A wonderful and delicate note of dry autumn leaves, forest, and cured ham adds an intriguing element to the overall experience, providing a clear indication of future development. Following the promising aroma, the flavour is equally entertaining and youthful, delivering pure and precise notes of spiced red fruit and minerals, with forest floor and dry flowers that are iodine-rich and long-lasting. The tannins are structured, layered, and deep, superbly refreshed by iodine-packed minerality, reaching an ideal level of phenolic maturity that creates a weightless stimulating length—perfectly proportioned in depth and breadth. There's much to unpack in this wine, with the capacity to age another 50+ years. Whether it will improve during this time depends on your preference for fully mature wines. Vosne di iper colorazione, volume come peso solido del vino, note vegetali e surmature, 14,5°, non sembra pinot nero ma un Montepulciano 😅 La star della batteria ossia la magnifica vigna Aux Bruleès, Domaine d'Eugenie ex René Engel con lo storico appezzamento nel Cru ( il migliore esposto e il più leggendario) era una bottiglia sfortunata... Creo que René, Pierre y Philippe nunca habrían imaginado que estas botellas se abrirían en Panamá muchos años después con Frédéric Engel. Se abre con notas almizcladas que se disipan revelando aromas marcados de especias con cerezas, granada y ciruelas rojas. It develops further with dried orange peel, dried rose petals, autumnal leaves mixed with humid soil, smoked meats, and Chinese five spice. It's generous on the palate with a medium + structure and a warm, mouth-coating sappy texture. Eventually, it blossoms to a dark fruit profile with black cherries, plums, dried orange peel, licorice, dried florals, old leather, undergrowth with humid soil, wood smoke, and spices. It has a medium + structure with warm dark fruit flavors. Consistency(한결같음)은 발전을 위한 변화와 혁신의 차원에서는 중립적이거나 다소 수동적인 개념일 수 있으나 일상생활만 놓고 보더라도 긍정적인 요소들이 훨씬 많습니다. 수십년을 같은 맛으로 인기를 끌던 냉면집 사장님이 더 맛있는 육수를 끓여보겠다고 새로운 도전을 하면, 육수 맛이 더 좋아지더라도 예전 맛이 아니라며 발길을 끊는 일도 있습니다. 사람도 한결같은 모습일 때 더 편하고 정감있고 오랜 인연으로 이어지는 경우가 많은 것 같습니다. 10년, 20년, 30년을 넘어 죽을 때까지 변치않는 신념과 하나의 스타일로 와인을 만들어나간다는 것은 쉽지 않은 일인 것 같습니다. 물론 긴 여정에 크고 작은 변화들은 있겠지만, 큰 틀에서 도멘의 DNA를 끝까지 유지했던 생산자들은 전설이 되었고, 그러한 도멘들은 아직도 최고의 찬사를 받습니다. A rather diverse range of bottles for the night. The 04 VR from Engel was showing extremely well. Sometimes, his village VR wines are convoluted and muddy, with limited survivability outside the bottle... the 97 and 98 in particular were particularly disappointing. But this 04 had moments of 04 Engel magic despite a more pronounced stemminess in this particular bottle. Drink up soon. DRC was over the hill, with plummy and woody notes. There was some improvement after 45 minutes, but ultimately remained a wrinkly granny. Palate retained noticeably more red fruit than on the nose.. not the best bottle condition.
