The bank holiday weekend is almost here so I’m going to hit you with a couple of supermarket wine recommendations, with fingers crossed for some warm, sunny 🌞 weather! Save this post for next time you are shopping in @waitrose ✅ What is it? Vento’z Alvarinho, 2023, Vinho Verde Portugal, 12% abv - £7:99 ✅ What is it like? I’ve been sampling a lot of Alvarinho (Albarino), it shouts “SUMMER” & is exactly what I want to be drinking in the months ahead. Like many of my recent wines this is light, fresh, and quaffable. The flavours & tastes are complex, with many different things; smells of grass, the seaside (salt) & herbal but to taste much more citrus, lemon zest & apple peel. This wine is typical of Vinho Verde wines but does show a good dose of acidity, without being too dry. Normally Alvarinho pairs well with seafood but I would consider a risotto, like bacon & leek, where the acidity of the wine will cut through the rich oozing rice; a similar style of pasta would also be great – in fact, I wish I had paired with the classic Carbonara I made for dinner last night. ✅ Why buy it? I see this appealing to Sauvignon Blanc lovers (feedback I have had recently suggests people are looking for alternatives), it has similar characteristics & is a cracking price. The Domaine Guy and Yvan Duflouleur is a family-run estate in Nuits-Saint-Georges that has been in the same family since 1596. The No25 Grand Siècle is composed of 65% 2008, 25% 2007 and 10% of 2006 vintage wine. And, as usual for Grand Siècle, three vintage years blended to recreate the “perfect” vintage. The composition is 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir exclusively from Grand Cru vineyards. The Chardonnay is from Avize, Cramant, Oger and Mesnil while the Pinot Noir is from Ambonnay, Bouzy, Verzy, Tours-sur-Marne and Mailly. Pieve Santa Restituta estate in Montalcino, purchased in 1994 by Angelo Gaja, is the family’s first expansion outside the Barbaresco and Barolo areas since its establishment in 1859. The estate spans 86 acres under vine. Favorably situated facing south by south-west, the estate has an altitude ranging from 1,050 to 1,150 feet above sea level. The hills, of the Eocene age and facing the sea, are characterized by an extremely windy, dry and bright microclimate, preventing damp stagnation and allowing full grape ripening. Since 1994 several redevelopment works have been carried out in the vineyards to transform the vine growing methods in line with Gaja’s winemaking philosophy. The name of the winery derives from the ancient Pieve (church), situated in the middle of the estate, whose foundations date back to the 4th century AD. The labels chosen for the wines pay tribute to the Pieve and recall the typical colors of the Gaja family, i.e. black and white. Wine has been made here since the 12th century. Pieve Santa Restituta produces three Brunello di Montalcino wines: Rennina, Sugarille and Brunello di Montalcino. This 2016 Rennina (WS 99 rated vintage) is a dark and youthfully understated beauty. A gorgeous display of tobacco and savory herbs gives way to tart cherries, currants, brown spice and earth tones, pencil lead, sandalwood, gaining further richness the longer it spends in the glass. It’s seamless, elegant and silky in feel, with layers of ripe red fruit offset by dried citrus, as notes of black tea, licorice, hints of olive and Tuscan clay settle in. I have some fantastic wine recommendations for you - different wines I have tried & highly recommend, this time a high quality a rich, smooth red from Romania, the latest wine that you might try at our tasting experiences! ✅ The Name - Prince Stirbey, Novac Sec, 2019, Dragasani, Romania, 14% abv, by @crama_stirbey RRP £20:00 ✅ The Wine. This is something else, I wasn’t sure what to expect but as I was relatively new to #winesofromania I didn’t know what to expect & this blew me away. The grapes are descended from ancient varietals which require careful management in the both the vineyard & winery to produce a multi layered complex red that, in my opinion would compete with prestigious Bordeaux wines. It has blackberry, plum & dark fruit of all descriptions with layers of cherry, cloves & chocolate – this wine is elegant & refined – certainly not a red fruit over sweet jammy wine. The acidity is quite high & the tannin subtle so it will age, I therefore matched with a classic Bolognese & loved it – this is a mid-week or weekend wine you will love. I’ve held off posting about this wine for a week or more, not because I doubt the quality, its brilliant, but my focus has been on wines for spring, but in the end given how good it is, how much I enjoyed when paired with I had to share & I really do want you to try this one – it would be a star guest at any dinner table So far, every wine from @solariswines has been excellent, working with them is going to be exciting for my customers - they are a new company specialising in importing wines with difference from small authentic producers.
