Frodo is feeling friendly! BTRC foster Frodo has made some big strides since arriving in his foster home. At first, he was very cautious and didn’t like to be handled. Now, he allows his foster mom to touch his paws and pick him up. Recently, when he was sleeping, his foster mom wrapped him up like a baby to move him from the couch to the bed and he woke up simply to kiss her and then quickly went back to sleep. A little trust can go a long way. ❤ Among Frodo’s favourite things are fuzzy blankets, human snuggles and nature shows. He has become so invested in these shows that he now knows from the change in music when the animals will enter the scene. 🐅 So far, he was most riveted by a spider documentary (his foster mom did not share his sentiment!). He tries his best to enjoy fetch, but often he will attempt to catch or retrieve the ball while laying down. He doesn’t understand why fetch and naps need to be mutually exclusive. Frodo’s foster family installed a doggy camera to check in on Frodo when he’s left alone. They have quite the collection of cute still shots of a curious Frodo wondering why the “thing” on the wall sounds like mom and dad. 😂 Lucky for Frodo, he isn’t alone often – he is lucky enough to accompany his foster mom to work. He has made many fans with his charm and he enjoys his new position in the Receiving Department – receiving pets and treats that is! Frodo has a dental coming up and his luxating patella will be x-rayed at the same time. In-fact I am so easy-going that I have settled right into my foster home seamlessly. I have enjoyed other dogs in play groups, doing zoomies and playing fetch, but if you ask me, I would prefer to just hang out with my people. I do well with my foster cat sister, though I can be quite curious about her sometimes. I love to play fetch and tug-o-war with the rope. My walks are my favorite part of my day, I do well on leash with a good leader and treats to maintain my attention, I get extra curious about things sometimes. . . . ❤️ HEART WORM TREATMENT THIS WEEK ❤️ . Happy Tuesday!! It’s a busy week!! It’s a busy MEDICAL week for our dogs - they’ll all be better soon. Yesterday we posted about the two parvo puppies from the Memphis shelter we have committed to helping. Ann & Leslie. (See last post.) This morning we took two dogs to the vet clinic we use, Trooper & Beatrice, for heart worm treatment this week. Trooper is an 8 lb Chihuahua found on one of the busiest interstates in the country, I-40, by a State Trooper. Sweet Beatrice is a St Bernard mix whose dad died suddenly. On Thursday, Toby (the coonhound) & Mango go back to see the orthopedic surgeon who is treating them. Toby is not using his leg after surgery to repair a broken leg, so we are looking for other causes that may be a factor in his healing process. Mango is still being diagnosed. We ask for help all the time. We know we do. And you always help the dogs. We love you for it. They love you for it. We are asking again to help with our ever mounting vet bills. Heart worm disease is fatal, so it’s very important that Trooper & Beatrice get the treatment to get them back to being healthy dogs. With kitten season upon us, we wanted to shed some light on single kitten "syndrome". If you’ve ever had kittens, you know how much they play together. Sometimes that play can become a bit rough. This is how they learn from one another the boundaries of fun play and not so fun play. In order to become well-socialized cats, kittens need to learn appropriate behavior from one another. If they don’t learn limits in their play as kittens, they often develop inappropriate playful aggression. In other words, it may be cute when a kitten attacks your ankles when you walk by or playfully nips at your fingers while you’re playing. It will be much less cute, not to mention painful, when they are full grown. If you feel that you are unable to care for two kittens, we highly suggest that you consider an adult cat in need of a forever home. These last couple of weeks have been very busy for us as kitten season hit us with a bang! Our first 2 litters went off to their wonderful new homes, some in pairs and some to join new feline families. Their foster homes then did a quick turnaround before the next Mums moved in 🏡 We currently have 17 kittens between 3 mums (Gemma, Emily & Eliza) and Georgia, who is expecting her litter any day now. Some of the mums have their own kittens plus extras 😳 Emily needed a c-section due to complications and initially didn’t take to her kittens. Thankfully, she is now a brilliant mum despite only being about 6 or 7 months old herself. This is only the start of what is to come, and we must stress again the importance of neutering cats before you let them outside. We are not reserving kittens at this stage, but in around 6-8 weeks, we will have plenty in need of loving homes. If you are thinking of adopting, please consider a black or black & white kitten. The cone is off for Romeo! We are happy to report that Romeo has recovered from his recent cryptorchid neuter and BOAS (brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome) surgery. You might recall that, during the procedure, a growth was found in the back of his throat. This was removed and sent for testing. Fortunately, it was found to be a non-cancerous “fibro mucosal” polyp, and no further treatment is required. Speaking of removals, Romeo was much more pumped about another one – the removal of his cone! Playtime, mealtime and snuggle time are now even better. Romeo is an energetic boy and loves his toys – even though they seem to spontaneously combust. It’s common to see Romeo standing in the middle of the room, fluff everywhere, with a look of pride on his face! His enthusiasm is not just for indoor play, however, as this boy likes to walk. He fairs well on a leash, but his curiosity and excitement often get the best of him, so his foster dad is working on how Romeo reacts to animals he encounters on his walks. As much as Romeo loves to be active, he also appreciates his downtime and enjoys the serenity of his crate and a peaceful nap as he waits for his foster parents to return home. Romeo recently discovered the joys of technology while lounging on the couch with his foster dad—he can’t get enough doggy videos on the iPad! We feel like Romeo has what it takes to be screen-worthy, too – so we will be sure to update you on this handsome boy soon! Your babies are safe, sweet mama. 🐈🌈 Thank you for protecting and defending them. We will do our absolute best to raise your babies and find them loving homes in your honor. Today we welcomed in the precious little orphans to our River Haven Rescue nursery. 💙 Mama lost her life defending her babies from a hawk. 🥺 All three kittens are boys and estimated to be 2 weeks old. They are currently with an experienced bottle feeder and neonatal foster, and we could not be more thankful for her amazing care to raise these little ones. A very big thank you to their emergency foster mom coordinating with the family that found them, and bottle feeding through the night and today. It takes a village, especially for the tiniest babies. They have been crying a lot and restless at times. They miss their mama. 🥺 But they are nursing fairly well and all three have been purring up a storm. It's a big change for them... But we will be there for them every step of the way. Weights, feedings, activity level, urination, and stool are all being closely monitored. Stool is loose which could be due to change from mom's milk to formula. A little bit dehydrated, but that should improve as stool and feedings improve. Fecal check pending. Probiotic added to formula once daily as precaution to jump start getting a hold of the loose stool. Kittens can dehydrate quickly, and loose stool should always be addressed. We have everything we need for supplies, but we could use one to two containers of baby wipes and one box/bag of puppy pads, if anyone has an extra to spare. 💕 #riverhavenrescue #rescuesaveslives #fosteringsaveslives #bottlebabies

Our idea of a Sunday Funday? Celebrating the amazing week we had for #spring2action raising $34,000 from all of our generous supporters by saying YES to 14 kitties that needed us! Yes, you read that right, FOURTEEN! While this might not seem like a huge number to larger organizations or shelters, it’s a big undertaking for our dedicated volunteers to make this happen in one day. Hours and hours of work go into answering the outreach from the community seeking help for found cats and kittens, some more emergent than others, making plans to get the kitties to safety and lining up foster homes to accept them into their care. We are so deeply grateful for our team, near and far, that make this happen day in and day out! Special thanks to @shibuyarollcall for transporting 3 families to their fosters, including her own mama and precious babies! In addition to our planned intake today, we received an urgent plea for a pair of newborn kittens found cold in the rain late last night with no mama in sight. We are so grateful for our neonate expert @capcitycats jumping at the chance to save these babies. Unfortunately, one of the kittens passed away before we were put into contact with the finder but our little orange boy is now safe with his foster mom and receiving the critical care a 2 day old baby needs. His outlook is guarded but he’s in the very best hands. We will share more about all of these sweet kitties as they settle in their foster homes but we were too excited not to show you a sneak peek at a hard day’s work for the crew! We love our volunteers! 🧡
Meet Alfie Solomon, one of our newest pups to Motley Zoo, who is looking for his forever home! If we have any Argylle fans in the house, then you'll recognize Alfie as Samuel L. Jackson's character in the recent film (and honestly, you guys should check out the flick in your spare time - it's a fun one!) Alfie is a 7 month old Chihuahua mix who came to us with a transport of NINETEEN pups. all the way from Roswell, New Mexico! We were able to take in 5 of the pups, who are now know as our "Argylle" litter. They were literally saved at the last minute - like, they had an hour left at the shelter. We are so thankful that we were able to step in and help out, because the idea of this super cute face not being here anymore.... yeah, well, we couldn't take it. 😭 So many shelters are overcrowded and struggling, and animals are being unnecessarily euthanized simply for space purposes. This absolutely guts us, and while we cannot save them all (try as we might) - we are grateful we could step in and step up for Alfie and company. Whilst the person who ended the life of poor little Rocco has still not been identified, we would like to say a big thank you for the kindness and generosity our supporters have shown us in response. The Total Giving Appeal raised £1057 towards Rocco’s vet bill. We also received a very unexpected anonymous donation of £1000. As part of our“Senior Sunday" series, we want to share stories about special NWBR pups who are adored as seniors. Some of our stories will include pups that have since crossed the rainbow bridge but will always be remembered. Each story is told by their family who loves them dearly. This week's NWBR senior story comes from Lanna, who shares her story of Hoss. Although Hoss himself wasn't an alum of NWBR, his impact resonates deeply as he brought his family to NWBR rescue—a gesture emblematic of the loyalty and love that many boxers and their families embody towards the cause. Hoss was already 7 and considered a senior by the shelter in Montana he was left at. Lanna and her partner John had been watching this particular rescue and knew immediately that Hoss was for them. Their adoption counselor worried that Hoss would be nervous, but he hopped right into the car, made himself at home, and spent the rest of the drive with his head on the center console between Lanna and John. He fit perfectly, literally and metaphorically, as all Boxers do! Though he was a senior already, he was an adventuresome pup, constantly hiking, rafting, and boating. He attended work regularly and was considered a therapy dog at Lanna's office. Hoss stayed with us for 7 more years, and passed peacefully in his dad's arms one evening, gracefully and on his own terms. Prepare your hearts for this one... This is an absolutely heartbreaking rescue. . . . A stray mama cat lost her life defending her babies from a hawk. A hawk was seen circling around the property of a home owner in a rural area of Marbury, AL. When they went out to look, they found mama cat passed away near her babies. She was a stray that had recently taken up on their property. Mama was found with many injuries. 🥺 Fearing for the life of the kittens, the family immediately brought the trio to safety. Absolutely heartbreaking. Poor mama lost her life defending her babies out of love and protection. She deserved so much more. Please have your pets and the strays you care for spayed and neutered. This heavily pregnant momma was being dropped off at SBCS while we were there. Got her a quick scan no chip, and out to the car she went. On the way back, we made a call to get her in for xray and wellness check at noon 4/27. Well, at midnight she said, it's time. ☔️Every time it rains, it rains, Pennies from Heaven! We’re thrilled to share that one of our first Mama’s of the year and her 3 perfect boys are all ready for adoption and accepting applications. Pennies from Heaven is a beautiful tortie with a heart of gold to match her gorgeous face and sparkling bright green eyes. She is a total sweetheart and has been the perfect mom to 3 rowdy boys since they were born in January. Their foster mom was smitten from the day she picked them up on Valentine’s Day - fitting because she has given them SO MUCH LOVE - as they all grew into amazing little kittens. Twiddly Bop, Shooby Dooby and Pizzaioli Baby are confident little boys that love to play, wrestle and when it’s time to settle down, they’re happy to snuggle up and have a cuddle pile. This trio of orange cuties are available to adopt together if you really can’t decide on just one! We’re open to a pair going together. But it’s a non negotiable, as with all of our young kittens, that they be adopted to a home with another young cat willing to play with them. Pennies from Heaven would be fine as a single kitty but she has gotten along well with other adult cats in her foster home. She appears to be timid and stressed by the presence of dogs so we would prefer a doggo-free home for her. The boys would be okay with dogs but we don’t equate a dog to having feline companionship for kittens and still require another cat in their future forever homes.
