Say hello to Xena and Gabrielle, my newest fosters! I've actually had these two for a while, but the last few weeks have been crazy! These two ladies are 3 weeks old now, but I first got them at only 5 days old! A few days after picking them up, Gabrielle got sick and refused to eat for a few days. Luckily, I was helping at a bottle feeding class where another foster was able to teach me how to tube feed! However, then I got the news I had to leave in two days for a last-minute business trip, and she still wasn't eating on her own. We were able to find an amazing temporary foster from @thebottlebrigade facebook group who was able to take them both and tube feed Gabrielle until she was feeling well enough to start eating again! I am so so thankful for both fosters - the one who taught me such a valuable skill and the one who took such amazing care of them for the week I was gone! Hello, it’s me-ow. Adele is a very sweet and gentle but slightly anxious young kitty, looking for her fur-ever emotional support human. She goes Rolling in the Deep when getting butt pats, looking at birds, or munching on her favorite snack. When she’s not playing soccer with her mouse toy or meowing for your attention, she’s a Daydreamer sitting on the cat tower or laying on the floor in the middle of the room. She is sure to Make You Feel her Love when she nudges her head into your hand in the mornings, or with the endless amount of toys she will bring you from all around the house. Sadly she was surrendered to the shelter a year after being adopted as a kitten, after developing behavioral issues in her home likely caused by the bullying of the resident cat. As a result, she would do best as the only pet in the home with an experienced cat owner. She has thrived in her foster home with 2 adults and is comfortable around our visitors. Because of her traumatic past she may give you the Cold Shoulder when approached too suddenly, but once she feels comfortable she will flop over on the floor and demand full body rubs and butt pats! FOSTER HOME URGENTLY NEEDED!!! Phil is a super sweet, generally low maintenance dog. He is potty trained and leash trained. He is also very good with commands and knows lots of tricks. He loves walks and hikes. Phil is not good with cats and small rodents. Phil is an anxious dog but has a lot of love to give once he gets to know you. He is scared of people he does not know and can get overwhelmed. Phil is about 7 years old and 34 pounds. In the past, he was good with other dogs, but he's been in a home for a few years without other dogs, so we're not sure anymore (though he was good at the adoption fair). No kids for Phil. Noortje 🐾 Noortje is een mooie poes, geboren op 11 april 2018. Deze dame is afgestaan omdat het met de andere kat niet matcht en Noortje buiten wordt aangevallen door andere katten. Wellicht heeft het er ook mee te maken dat Noortje doof is, maar in ieder geval gaan wij voor haar op zoek naar een nieuw thuis waar geen andere katten of honden wonen. En waar Noortje in een afgezette achtertuin veilig naar buiten kan ivm haar doofheid. Een balkon alleen zal niet voldoende zijn voor Noortje. Noortje moet in nieuwe situaties altijd eerst even wennen, maar na de gewenning geniet zij hier inmiddels van heerlijk geaaid worden en van de kriebeltjes. Bij nieuwe mensen blijft zij eerst voorzichtig, dat was ook bij haar vorige baas wanneer er visite kwam. Samenwonen met oudere (12+) kinderen kan prima, mits zij rekening houden met Noortjes gehoor. Samenwonen met jongere kinderen past niet bij Noortje. Ook omdat Noortje niet houdt van oppakken. Verder is Noortje speels (balletjes, speelmuisjes, touwtjes: alles is leuk), is zij goed zindelijk en gebruikte zij keurig de krabpaal. Voor honden is Noortje bang. Welke leuke baas zoekt een lieve poes en heeft een rustige thuissituatie met de afgezette tuin? When Rein arrived at our Pet Resource Center in Northwest Arkansas (@bfas_nwa) with her five puppies, she was kind of a mess. She had mange, heartworms, and an injured tail that would require amputation. Although having all of these diagnoses at once could deter some people and seem scary, our team knew they were all 100% treatable. They were there to help! Knowing that she would need a strict treatment protocol, Rein was sent into foster with Judy. Due to her multiple illnesses all needing treatment at once, it took months of intense care to get Rein healthy, but she finally did! And as much as Judy loved her, she knew she had to let her go...or so she thought... You see, Rein was adopted out, but it was not quite the right fit for everyone involved, so she was returned to our team. That is when Judy knew. Rien was meant to stay with her all along. Zeus (the third) has clearly had some training. He already knows how to sit, lay down and shake! Belgian Malinois are extremely smart and thrive in an environment with lots of continued training and mental stimulation. They are frequently trained as police K9 dogs or service dogs because they need a job to do and keep their brain busy. This breed is not suitable for someone without large dog experience or working breed/high energy experience. Zeus would do best in a large yard with secure high fencing and someone with an active lifestyle. He would be perfect for someone who runs daily or goes hiking regularly. Zeus would do best in a household with older teens who have been around high energy dogs before. We have not had Zeus around other dogs just yet, a meet and greet is required if there are already dogs in the household. No cats please. When Zeus had his photo shoot, the photo team said he was calm, sweet, gentle when taking food, and well behaved. He also learned quickly to sit up for treats! (This boy is a smartie!) ✨Adoption Success!✨ We rescued Rotor, now known as Bruno, from a crowded high kill Houston shelter in February of 2023, where he had been brought in as a stray. Dogs like Bruno don't have great luck evading euthanasia at this particular shelter, so we were so glad he could make it to us in Colorado! He was quickly adopted, and we recently received an update from his family. "To be totally honest, that first week I thought we had made a huge mistake. He had horrible separation anxiety and I wasn't sure how we would all do long term. With tons of love and patience, he has come to realize that this is his home and he's living the good life. I never allowed our dogs on the couch before, but when he snuggled up to me and rested his head on my lap that first night, I melted, and now he even has his own spot on the couch! He is the sweetest boy and a huge cuddle bug. He loves everyone and everything, and is so curious and excited about life. He even has his own instagram page so we can document his goofiness and fun times. Simply put, he's the best! We love him so much and couldn't imagine life without him. I thought you might like to know that he's doing really well and is in good hands. Thank you for all you do for these sweet fur babies!" We can't thank you enough for giving Bruno the time and patience he needed to feel safe with you in his new home. Decompression can be really hard for dogs coming from the shelter environment! Gracie is a young and typically energetic husky with a very sweet side. Lady came to us in need some love and care. She has proven herself to be extremely affectionate and enjoys butt scratches. She is a wonderful doggie and loves to play with toys. Toss a toy in the yard and she will happily chase after it and bring it back every time. She loves to play fetch. And once she's had plenty of playtime, she loves to settle down for cuddles and will give out plenty of kisses. The way to her heart is through play and toys. :-) We recently introduced her to our Dogs Playing for Life Playgroup and she has done well so far. She seems to be interested in other dogs but we are still assessing her. As with all dogs, a meet and greet is required if there are already other dogs in the household. We think she might do okay with dog-savvy cats who are familiar with living with another dog but we are not sure. If there are cats in the household it would be best for Lady to be fostered for a period with the other animals to ensure a good match. We think Lady should be fine in an apartment as long as she gets plenty of daily exercise. It’s crucial to discuss what “No-Kill” actually means to clear up a major misconception: “No-Kill” does not mean “No Euthanasia.” The term simply means a shelter has a 90% live release rate. In other words, a shelter taking in 10,000 animals can euthanize up to 1,000 animals and still be considered “No-Kill.” 🐾👉🏼There are generally two types of animal shelters: ▫️Open-Intake/Municipal Shelters (“Kill-Shelters”): These are facilities like Greenville County Animal Care (GCAC), the largest open-intake shelter in South Carolina. They are funded by tax dollars and are required by law to accept EVERY stray animal, and for GCAC, this means taking in EVERY stray dog and cat found in BOTH Greenville and Spartanburg Counties. These shelters are often nicknamed the “City Shelter” or “The Pound.” ▫️Limited-Intake/Private Nonprofit Shelters (“No-Kill”): Shelters like the Greenville Humane Society operate solely on donations and grants. They can refuse animals to prevent overcrowding and maintain a high live-release rate. They do not take in strays, and schedule owner surrenders far in advance (up to 8 weeks out) due to capacity limitations. 🚨The stigma surrounding “Kill-Shelters” actually harms the animals it intends to protect. Many people prefer adopting from “No-Kill” shelters to avoid supporting euthanasia. Ironically, limited-intake “No-Kill” shelters will refer animals they cannot take to open-intake shelters, often leading to euthanasia. This cycle results in critical gaps in support for the shelters that need it most—those doing the heavy lifting by accepting all animals. By trying to avoid supporting euthanasia, people inadvertently increase it by not supporting the shelters that face the most dire needs. Every shelter plays a critical role, but municipal shelters like GCAC desperately need community support more than ever.
