A couple of weeks ago, I was on a dance trip to Chicago. Arriving almost a full day earlier than my travel companions, I took myself on a date to @artinstitutechi. (It counted as a most excellent Artist's Date as well, fulfilling part of my contract to self with my Artist's Way journey!) To say that it was a magical day would he an understatement... I could have easily spent several more days there exploring all of the treasures. This isn't a sponsored post or even a recommendation for that particular museum per se, though if you're in the city and you're an art or history person, it is a worthy place to see.... rather, it is an encouragement to take yourself out and enjoy solo outings now and then. Ahh, it was such an awesome date! Quaint French bakery, delicious food, and JUST ME! Yep, I took myself out on an impromptu morning date after dropping my granddaughter off at the train station. As I was about drive straight back back home, I thought…what’s the rush?🙄 Why not take alittle time and enjoy? I had this amazing croque madame for breakfast 😋 at @mariebettecafe and then popped into Sephora to actually try on makeup. (I’m usually an online shopper). Yep, in short, it was heaven.🥰 Sometimes, especially during the hectic holidays, we rush everywhere on auto pilot. Even when we can make time to slow down. Somehow when we are alone, it feels extra decadent to slow down and have alittle fun. A date even!😳 As your life and leadership coach, I want to remind you to slow down and savor the good stuff. And that it’s OK, even highly encouraged, to treat yourself. Today I woke up feeling like I wanted time to myself. I felt like I wanted to sit and watch people walk past, wondering where they're from and what they're up to today. Enjoying a hot decaf coffee and looking out at the warm Spring sunshine, thinking about my life. Does anybody else do that? Go on dates with themselves and people watch? I would never have been able to do this if I still worked in an office job. Just get up and go, whenever I want. And if I don't feel like working, I don't. I'm not financially rich, by any means. Artist Date #1 It’s been awhile since I took myself on an artist date. Inspired by Julia Cameron’s book, The Artist’s Date, I took myself to the Greek opera performance of Orpheus and Eurydice. This story presented itself recently in a book I was reading and lo and behold it appears in my local theater a week later. The magic of the Universe at work! If you’ve never taken yourself out on a date I highly recommend it. Yes, it may feel awkward and uncomfortable at first. What I’ve come to realize is that I truly enjoy my own company. And I also love that I don’t miss out on the things I truly want to do. I don’t need to convince anyone else to come with me because I’m going anyway. Sometimes a solo date is just what you need to fill your soul. I’ve never experienced live opera before and to enjoy it in this intimate production in my hometown is such a blessing. I am grateful for those who train to perform from their heart. I feel the heart connection in their passion for their performance. And the beautiful simplicity of the personal interaction between audience and stage. It feels nice to be awed every now and then.

Tonight I took myself on a date sans dog! 💃 I blasted music in the car & sang along loudly, I took a thermos of herbal tea & a bar of 85% chocolate to Derwentwater & watched the sunset in blissful silence. It's the most at peace I have felt since I was in New Zealand 🙏 Would Rafiki have loved it? Yes. Does that mean she needed to be there? No. Is it okay for me to enjoy different experiences without my dog? Yes! Whilst she would have had a great time, I would have had to manage her, keep an eye on her, keep an eye on other dogs & people, & she probably wouldn't have been too enthused at sitting still for a whole hour 🙄 So yes I will be taking her there another time but tonight was just for me & it was perfect, & I didn't feel a shred of guilt 🥰 When was the last time you took yourself on a date? 10th of September 2018. It was the night I went to @dishoom for the first time. It wasn’t significant in that I went to a restaurant I wanted to try, it was significant because it was the first time I took myself on a date. I thought about this as I was in the Kings Cross one tonight after a couple of weeks of travel. Again on my own (what felt like the first time in a long time!) Back in 2018, I had been in 16 years of relationships, and had always done things with friends and as a couple. This time I had got on a train and headed to London for 4 days on my own. I did think about Malaga as my first solo venture, however having friends in London allowed me a parachute if I needed it. I ended up with a table for 4 to myself, I was feeling so nervous, I wanted to rush through my food…then something in my mind said “this is your table, embrace it!” I became present and enjoyed the amazing food I heard so much about. So I did! I took that step that night and I’ve never looked back. Fast forward nearly 5 years I’ve been to countless destinations, met lots of new friends, had some incredible experiences, laughed like never before and so much more. It started with asking for a table for one please. Funny thing is, I’ve never really been alone in that time. I normalised it, I made new friends just by talking, my industry has been kind also and I feel like a regular in many cities across the world now. Business grew in that time, as well as my own personal life. Dishoom actually became a client on NYE 2019 in Edinburgh also. I event went to Malaga! It’s funny how life works out at times. Think what I’m trying to say, is take that first step when you need a change. . Throwback when I took myself on a date to a pottery painting session😇 Sometimes we forget we can have fun alone. To be honest I was scared at first but I proved myself that it's OK to go out alone and have fun at the same time. How well do you truly know yourself? I bet you can tell your self your favorite color, book, song, movie... But beyond surface level, do you know what your values are? Do you know what brings you gratitude? What drives you everyday? Do you know your own why? It's good to really get to know who you are and what you want. When you first start asking yourself these questions, the answers may surprise you. The answers sometimes sound selfish. Today was nice. I took myself out to lunch which was a huge thing for me. My anxiety was High and I felt like everyone was staring at me. Billy, no mates lol but I'm proud I did it. What a great night! Took myself to the @majesticempire Theater to see Richard Thomas in “To Kill a Mockingbird.” His performance as Atticus Finch was phenomenal. I told myself I was not going to leave until I met him, got his autograph, or took a picture with him. I accomplished all three! (Another item, checked off the bucket list!) What a down-to-earth man! Took myself on a little date this morning. I went to a town-wide yard sale in Delaware City. I had fun rummaging through the library’s book sale and walked away with a few books and then found a cute little book stand at one of the other yard sales. Not pictured I also found a couple bundles of magazines for collaging which I love to do! I almost didn’t go because the weather today has been murky with a little bit of patchy rain and I wasn’t sure if there would be anyone out. But I decided to chance it. In the end I’m glad I went. I enjoyed the time with myself, doing something I enjoyed. I blasted the radio on the way there and sang along. I took a really long time in the library and loved every second of it. I enjoyed browsing at the various yard sales, chatting with people and most of all enjoying my own company. Now I’m off to make some tea and read!
