3/4L caught some time in the garden before the skies opened up again this morning to replace some nutrients, weed and harvest. Then they got busy in the kitchen making deconstructed hamburgers. 4/5H worked hard in the afternoon to create the colourful and delicious menu that was enjoyed by all. While I helped out a few times last term, this term I’m joining Mrs Kelly to bring the @kitchengarden_foundation program to our school. While this means a change to library classes, I’m excited to expand my skills and work with S2 and S3 students. This program encompasses all areas of learning and values and fosters lifelong skills our students need. Grey days… We all have them, and sometimes, they’re just so tricky to snap out of! Stage 3 were utilising loads of inquiry skills today in the library. Students used the Oliver ‘My Library’ app through the @nsweducation student portal to search for books on animals, then found the book in the library. Students then read some information and summarised the information into their own words. Scar Town written and narrated by @tristanbancksbooks is shortlisted for 2024 CBCA Younger Reader Book of the Year award. It is perfect for this age group, year 5-year 8, and I highly recommend it. Tristan’s storytelling plonks me right in the setting of Old Scarborough, I can see and smell it! Suspense builds as the relationships between the characters reveal themselves. Tristan’s pearls of thought prompters are great for teachers to discuss in class and for students to think about. The clever weaving of the human impact to the environment and the consequences adds to the story. I can see this being made into a film 🎥 and hope it does! A little of ‘blue’ to brighten our day in the library. Today I organised all the @alianational #nationalsimultaneousstorytime books ‘Bowerbird Blues’ by the wonderful @auraparker for our classrooms and learning spaces. I purchase a copy for every classroom and learning space within the school, using our @scholastic_au book club rewards points and printed out some of the amazing resources to help implement this wonderful book in the classroom. We are super lucky that Aura came to our school last year and read this aloud and even did a first time ever baby bowerbird drawing with students. What are the most memorable moments in your life? For me, the ones that stick out most are those that involve my kids and husband and of course, the tremendous adventure of us moving countries! A little something I’ve been working on: Reading Response Strategies X Multiple Intelligence Theory: a matrix to help students choose a RRS that complements and nurtures their intelligence. Almost all the strategies require the use of a digital design platform. Although I actually used Canva to create my nature dress—is that cheating?—I actually found this intelligence really difficult to channel. 🙈 I’ll share a bit more about this in a different post. It’s still a work in progress: I am still brainstorming more strategies to include around the circles. What an amazing day at Lit Up Festival at the @statelibrarynsw . Hearing @whatleybruce speak was so special and emotive. The skills and techniques used to create his works is so inspiring. @garylonesborough emphasised the importance of storytelling, representation and how good teachers can transform lives. Then we had a deep dive into all things library with information about AI, @theschoolmagazine and the amazing work @jasmine_seymour_gudyung is doing to bring back traditional language and the IFF and how it can be aligned to new curriculum. After lunch I toured the painting collection and then we had a Fast Five session with 5 new authors and illustrators @amandalieber @apsarabaldovino , @nisaluk.c.illustrations , @krisddarell and @fionalloydauthor . Then we were privileged to hear the @ozchildrenslaureate @sallyrippinauthor talk about ensuring and empowering all young people to become readers. Borrowing Success. Last year I started a little lucky reward system for students who borrowed. They simply write their name on the slip every time they borrow and put it in the boxes. At the end of every month I randomly pull out 5 slips and those students receive a WOW award and a Freddo. During term 2 and 3 our school is participating in a battery recycling program. Batteries cannot go into our regular or yellow garbage bins. If you have used batteries at home, they can be dropped off into the tube at school. There are a few safety guidelines to follow - * tape the end with clear sticky tape * don’t place them in metal or sealed containers * don’t bring them in your school bag - you might forget them * bring them in a plastic container, bag or cardboard container * place them in the tube straight away This is a great initiative from @maitland_city_council in an effort to reduce dangerous waste. Reading response strategies [RRS] don’t have to be boring. Over the last few years I’ve been passionately exploring contemporary pedagogical practices around RRS—fusing these with multiple intelligence theory and the practical development of information literacy skills. RRSs afford students the opportunity to digest and respond to texts: to develop a deeper or new understanding of what they have read. The use of RRSs require students to be more engaged in the reading process and thus using them means more active readers. 🥳📚 Reading playlists are a great way to engage your more musically minded students. It requires students to think about multiple “texts” and how they relate to and/or complement each other. The creation of a reading playlist (like the one I’ve created above) requires students to then visually portray this information using a digital design platform, like #Canva. The response goes beyond a paragraph reply, it requires the use of colour, image, text, and digital media (like hyperlinked YouTube QR codes) to convey meaning. Digital artifacts like this one take time to put together—even though they may seem like less work (because they are more fun!). March 2024 The Lost Ryū Emi Watanabe Cohen This is a very cool middle grade story about Kohei, a 10 year old boy growing up in Japan 20 years after Nagasaki was bombed. Kohei has a tiny ryū (dragon) but he also dreams about a time when there were big dragons everywhere. His grandfather is sick, but Kohei suspects that he knows more about these big ryū, and about Kohei’s father, who died when he was 3. With the help of Isolde, a mixed Japanese and Jewish American girl who moves in next door, Kohei goes on an adventure to solve this mystery, while also learning more about himself and the legacy of war that shadows his family, friends and country. Everyone wants to be seen - whether it be in books, in films or on TV - and ‘Everyone wants an Octopus Book’ by @liz_ledden and @makotokoji , published by @hardiegrantkids does this for the main character. When Inky the Octopus wants to read a book about another octopus he and his friend Quack, the Duck have no luck, but there are loads about ducks. So instead of wanting and complaining, the two friends write their own books about an Octopus, and their best friend. A great message about acceptance and representation in the world in a wonderfully illustrated read full of colour and movement. ANZAC Day books are always such a powerful way to discuss such important topics with our students and ‘The Hidden Hat’ by Phil Cummings, illustrated by @jennifer.goldsmith.storyteller published by @scholastic_au is a wonderful new addition to our collection. The contrasts between the current and the past are created beautifully with the text and images working magically together to show the emotions of a young g man serving in a foreign country, fighting for his life and lives of his mates. As time marches on we are losing our service men and women from past conflicts, so it is essential we keep those stories alive so current and future generations understand the sacrifices they made for us to live in a country where we have the freedoms we do. On ANZAC Day I remember my grandfather who served in WW2 . He never spoke of his time served but I have letters he wrote to my grandmother that show the blossoming love and the innocence of a young man during such a volatile and uncertain time. ‘Circles of Life’ by @greggdreise published by @penguinkidsaustralia is such a wonderful journey steeped in culture, meaning and tradition. Through the book we go on a journey to create a tradition artwork - collecting the pigment from the earth, the sticks to paint with and then the process of painting. The meaning and tradition and connection as the layers are built up are explained with respect and understanding. This is a beautiful book and such a great way to teach students what traditional artworks mean and the connection people have with their elders, animals and the land. Useful for educators to use as a resource when creating art within the classroom in an authentic way. I’ve been looking at my past Library programs and I used to be so diligent with my weekly evaluations. This is from the 2021 Term 2 Year 1 program and that was a fun term! Our school then changed the way teachers do program evaluations, so I stopped doing them like this… but looking back over it (especially the photos), I think I need to go back to this format. It was so easy to see what worked well each lesson and what changes could be made for the following year. . . ‘Dinosaur in my Pocket’ by @ashleighjbarton , illustrated by @blithe_illustrations and published by @hachetteaus is a cautionary tale of how we can feel when we do something we know is wrong. James loves tiny things and dinosaurs and on a trip to the museum he gets both of things together, but with no money he places the dinosaur in his pocket. From here on the guilt becomes all too consuming as the dinosaur grows and grows. 🌏 Happy Earth Day! I think one of the best ways to teach children about caring for the environment is by teaching them to have an appreciation of nature. That’s why I love the Backpack Explorer series!!! These books have been favorites in our family for the last 3 years. They are so engaging and full of information! We currently own On the Nature Nature Trail, Bird Watch, and Rock Hunt, but I hope to own them all eventually! Each title contains fascinating information with gorgeous photos and illustrations, interactive activities and challenges, plus journaling pages, stickers and badges to earn for each section of the book. They also come with a mini magnifying glass which you can take with you while you explore outside (or do what my 5 year old does, which is use it to look closer at the images). We love taking these out with us when we explore local trails. They have really encouraged my girls to slow down, observe, and appreciate the nature all around us. Seed to Sky is a stunning and informative narrative non-fiction picture book that looks at the oldest tropical rainforest in the world, the Daintree. Located in Tropical North Queensland, the Daintree Rainforest is home to a multitude of animals and plants that have adapted and evolved to cope with changing conditions over time. I love games and puzzles so this book is totally up my alley. It makes me want to do another escape room. The pictures are from when my family did an 80s themed escape room around Christmas in 2022. It was way fun. My husband tends to be the MVP in the escape rooms we’ve done. We’ve done three and escaped twice. 🗝️⏳🃏🔎 Middle grade readers will definitely enjoy this book.
