"The Art of Self Defense" Genre: black comedy, martial arts, drama The Art of Self Defense (TAOSD) has a misleading poster that promises a either a karate adventure or a laugh out loud comedy. The movie delivers on karate and comedy but neither in the form we're expecting. This is a tight knit movie with a small cast and few locations. But the dark comedy façade disguises a very tense movie. The film's themes mirror those of Fight Club but while the movie doesn't have the same shock value, it does take a more blunt approach to representing toxic masculinity, dishing out some cathartic retribution at the end. The movie is also a darkest timeline version of Karate Kid, if the force of karate were used for destructive ends. This movie came soon after Eisenberg's roles like Justice League and Now You See Me 2, which had left us feeling that his best acting days were behind him. But TAOSD reminds us oh his acting talents. Gone is the jittery fast talker, replaced by a lonely, reserved performance that lets his body language do the talking. Alessandro Nivola is magnetic as the Sensei, the perfect representation of the cult of personality. Imogen Poots's character is a great representation of a strong female who struggles in a male dominated world and keeps the film about toxic masculinity away from the irony of having an all male cast. The Art of Self-Defence (2019) - 7/10 • Dark Comedy 😈😂 • Premise: Casey Davies (Jesse Eisenberg) is an accountant who gets beaten up by the gang. As a consequence, he decides to join a Karate school to defend himself and his life changes for good/bad... My Opinion: A very good movie which details the progression of a man who develops a new personality from his new found environment. For a dark comedy, the plot of this movie was done very well. Jesse plays the innocent nerd role very well, similar to what we’ve seen of him multiple times over the years. His character development was interesting as you saw him change from a timid guy into an aggressive man who seeks approval and authority. The movie emphasised on that development on how people change in a new scenery and how he constantly seeks to impress his superiors. Even though it’s titled under the ‘Comedy’ section, this has a lot of dark elements in this movie and at a certain point does take that ‘evil’ turn which did alarm me 😂. On the other hand, I would’ve liked a bit more in depth character building. In particular, around the middle of the story as it just sped into him changing back and forth personalities. In addition, as the story developed it did get more and more predictable. To which, I knew what was going to happen towards the last third of the movie. However from a story point of view, this was a enjoyable watch and I did enjoy the karate aspects, which did involve a few humorous elements. Conclusion: If dark comedy is your genre, then this shouldn’t go missing for you. It’s a great story of a guy developing himself and trying to better himself in a new environment. 6.4/10 • Watched this because of another reviewer’s recommendation, It’s a bit underwhelming to say the least. Not necessarily bad, it’s above average with some major problems that I found problematic and or hinder me from enjoying it in some parts. • This film first and foremost wants for the audience to feel relax and entertained while giving some social commentary mainly about toxic masculinity and the effects it has. The major problem that I found is that the delivery, set-up, and or punchline to each joke is just too on the nose about it, it creates these feeling when someone tries to explain a joke to you, but you already understand it, it just that you don’t find it funny. I do admit that there’s a couple of times where I laughed more than just a snicker or quickly exhaling carbon dioxide, but most of the jokes didn’t land right for me and some of them are unfunny. The jokes was also kind of forced by the theme, it made fun of toxic masculinity in a not really creative and predictable way. The film takes itself way too seriously that some of the comedic aspects doesn’t felt genuine or just completely disturbs the flow of the film, since this is also a dark comedy, some of the times I just don’t know what was supposed to be funny, am I supposed to be laughing when a guy got killed violently? Or is it just to add some shock factor? The serious and comedic tone of the film doesn’t have a clear enough differentiator that it could’ve easily mixed up with one another, with both aspect contains violence, I don’t really know when I’m supposed to laugh or even consider it funny and overall the handling of both major aspects of the film’s story is just messy, clunky, a little bit chaotic (in not a good way). The writing is also a bit questionable, since the main antagonist’s motive to do the things he does is not clear nor even understandable. All that we know is just that he’s evil, violent, and toxic that he hinders everyone that he deems ‘not manly’ (including women) from progressing to the next belt because the story demands it or he’s just built that way, I guess. The Art of Self Defense is one of my favorite movies ever. 15/10. It has everything anyone could ever want: Jesse Eisenberg as the main character, karate, hilarious jokes with great comedic timing, tension, tragedy, a good friendship built on mutual respect, well written characters, AND a critique on hypermasculinity. Honestly it’s the best critique on hypermasculinity I’ve ever seen and I want every man ever to watch it (but women ofc should also watch it, it’s just a good movie). You can kind of describe it like Fight Club, if you think in terms of the escalation of violence and radicalized behavior. The Art of Self Defense (2019) “This is your belt. Do not come to class without this belt. It is yours. It is sacred... There will be a $15 charge to replace a lost belt.” This has been on my list for a while based off a really intriguing trailer. Jesse Eisenberg shines in a quirky, transformative role that seems written for him. The writing by writer/director Riley Stearns really shines here and all actors benefit. It's VERY quippy and feels very unique and refreshing. It won't be for everyone and it did take me some time to get used to but when all said in done it all blended together very nicely. I was a bit nervous the quirkiness would overtake any messages of the writing but it never does. It's a fun and enjoyable way to examine and critique hyper-masculinity while satirizing it at the same time. I thought the escalation and evolution of the tone throughout the story could've been a bit jarring but by the end of the flick it felt pretty natural. About as natural as The Karate Kid becoming Fight Club can be. I definitely wish Imogen Poots got a bit more to do. I enjoyed her story and loved her performance, but her story and character depth starts a bit late. Not too late, but she definitely comes into her own as a character in the back half of the movie. One last shoutout has to be @alessandro.nivola as Sensei. While Eisenberg fits seamlessly into the writing style, Nivola absolutely commands your attention with every scene. He goes from hilarious to stupid to scary in seconds. As perfect as Eisenberg's casting is, Nivola steals the show. I liked it a lot. *Now Streaming on HULU* #theartofselfdefensemovie

In an effort to learn how to defend himself, he joins a local dojo led by the charismatic and mysterious Sensi. What follows is a satirical look at gender roles, toxic masculinity and trauma. THE ART OF SELF-DEFENSE [REVIEW] If i want to say what I dislike about this film... probably nothing. From start to finish, no second felt wasted. It's slow paced and takes its time. The original script is well-written, predictable at a good point which baits you into predicting the twist which you'd find shocking even though you predicted it. The film is heavily focused on Casey, the protagonist played by Jesse Eisenberg, which gets a great arc; I mean the whole film is about him and every step of his evolution is well-made and presented on screen. The other characters get hints of their past especially Anna who has a beautiful, yet succinct arc in the film. The cast was perfect. Jesse Eisenberg was amazing in the role and delivered an incredible performance. Imogen Poots and Alessandro Nivola did a great job too. In terms of directing and style, from the opening shot you know you're watching something nice. Writer and Director Riley Stearns beautifully directed the film and shot it in a very nice way that I fell in love with. The cinematography is very bland but it was perfect. The lighting was always simple and felt natural which enhanced the experience. The editing was great. The film didn't fall a victim to the cliché of training montages and it did something fresh. The humor didn't always work for me but there is a certain absurdity to some events which make the film funny, sarcastic and more enjoyable. I have no comments on the music. I also have to add that the film has a rich thematic value: discussing masculinity and critiquing it. In many places the film highlighted feminist messages without forcing them and you can really relate to the female character. Overall, it's a fresh film that is enjoyable and really pleasant to watch. The Art of Self Defense is a dark comedy which showcases journey of a scrawny, lonely accountant (Casey played by Jesse Eisenberg) through his life changing events from being mugged and brutally bashed by unknown gang wearing helmet to joining karate for self-defense classes. The movie also represents several important aspects like Hyper Masculinity and toxic masculinity. A scene where Sensei from the dojo of Casey gives black belt to least deserving man rather than to a female who well deserved the belt shows the dark reality of society, from the representation of male counterparts being overly top of every female ones. We can see two shades of Casey's life one being brown which signifies how dull and boring his previous life as an accountant was and later on when he chooses to join the karate classes now his new found color is yellow like his belt which symbolizes optimism, energy, joy, happiness and friendship. The movie is not a fast paced action flick but a slow form of dark comedy with plot slowly revealing to the climax. The #2019 film The Art of Self Defense will not be for everybody. It’s a very dark comedy that contains some stupendous laughs, but also has very disturbing and upsetting moments. It also has some things to say. It takes place sometime in the mid 90’s and is about Casey ( #jesseeisenberg), a man that is bland, timid, and awkward. He struggles to make small talk with the jerk bros in his office, but he has an adorable dog that he relaxes with at home. When out buying some dog food, he is beaten near to death by a group of helmeted goons on motorcycles and has a lengthy recovery in the hospital. He’s terrified to leave his house at night and decides to buy a gun for protection. I love the depressing facts related to gun ownership that the gun store clerk tells Casey. “Gun owners are more likely to commit suicide, gun owners are more likely to get shot during a robbery than non gun owners, etc.” In the wake of real life tragedy after tragedy, I like the deconstruction of the common justifications for gun ownership. Anyway, Casey ends up joining a Karate dojo and it helps to boost his self confidence. The instructor, who is only known as Sensei ( #alessandronivola), seems to be a mild mannered motivational speaker, but as we see more from him, he reveals himself to be the definition of toxic masculinity. There is only one woman in the dojo and her name is Anna (the always awesome #imogenpoots). She is the most adept student, but she’s always overlooked for being a woman. These views of toxicity corrupt Casey for awhile and extreme things happen before he sees through the bullshit. I liked the messages and there’s plenty of laughs, but I know there will be a lot that do not like this movie. I definitely appreciate it’s quirkiness and may grow to like it more in the future. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
