When was the last time you celebrated yourself? As mums to autistic children we often get ridiculously over excited about things that our children do, that other people would consider small or meaningless, to the point that we want to tell everyone around us. It could be that our child tried a new food, managed to leave the house, got dressed by themselves or managed a whole day without a meltdown, we celebrate how amazing they are to manage something that had seemed impossible previously. It’s just a shame that we don’t extend the same excitement and courtesy to ourselves. We forget that we’re the ones always supporting them. We’re the ones showing extreme patience at times when we could easily scream, we’re the ones buying 20 packets of the same food so they never run out of what they like. We’re the ones having repeated conversations with various support services to find the right kind of help for them, we’re the ones that give up our careers to give them what they need, we’re the ones that that spend hours doing research. We’re the ones that fill out the endless forms, send endless emails and read endless books and follow endless links. We’re the ones that give them the time, space and unconditional love to be who they are. So, everyday, find something you did well and celebrate yourself for it. Every time you spoke to someone about your situation and didn’t cry…it’s a WIN. Every time you stopped yourself from slamming the phone down on yet another person that ‘just doesn’t get it’ it’s a WIN. Every time you got your child's name down on a waiting list (that could take years) it’s still a WIN. Every day that you showed up for work, exhausted, tired, stressed, but not beaten, it’s a WIN. When you manage to cook a meal instead of eating toast…it’s a WIN. Sebastian has autism and came to us at the start of his search for long term employment. Not knowing anything about resumes or interviewing, he relied on his employU employment specialists Kellie and Pharaoh to teach him. Together, they created a resume for Sebastian and practiced interview skills. From there he was able to find and complete a paid on the job training at Walgreens. After Walgreens, Sebastian was able to find a position at Arby's taking orders and keeping the dining area clean. With the help of Kellie and Pharaoh, he learned how to balance all of his responsibilities. Now that he has found long term employment Sebastian wants to set his sights higher. He wants to look for an even better job with higher pay using the resume and interview skills he now has. Gaining skills to further employment dreams is our goal for all our clients. I have gone back and forth on if I even wanted to share publicly about the topic. The fact that we got an autism diagnosis for both of our boys a few days before autism awareness month began didn’t feel like a coincidence. We have known that something was going on for a long time and honestly hoped for a diagnosis because we wanted to have answers and access to resources. Both boys have been in speech and OT for almost a year and a half now and have come SUCH a long way. Nothing about their lives is changing because of a diagnosis but there are lots of changes happening in our lives as parents. Lots of learning. Lots of paperwork. Lots of deep breathing and attempts to be more patient. Lots of research and tears. Lots of finding comfort in other families that share their stories and advice. Lots of trying to let go and understand their perspective. We are just starting this journey with them and still have a lot of learning to do but we love our boys through it all and wouldn’t want them to be anyone else. #autism #autismawareness #autistictwins #autistictoddler #autismmoms #autismparents #autismsupport

Until I had an autistic child, I did not really think autistic children played all that differently to neuroypical children. I knew that they prefer to play by themselves. I had no idea that there was a different style of playing that was a commonality amongst many autistic children🧒👦👧 I wanted to re-share this post as I thought it is so important to raise awareness and normalize the way autistic children play. For example, my son loves lining up toys, especially cars. He particularly enjoys spinning objects, such as the wheels of a car or even his ukulele!😂 He will find a part of a toy or any object that can be spun, will spin it and watch it with fascination! This is play for him. This is what brings him 🤩 When we have our vacuum on which is rare because of the loud noise, he will sometimes watch the wheel of the vacuum turn with fascination. Have you ever had a word enter your vocabulary that you’d never used regularly before but suddenly you were using it/saying it all the time? For example, when the COVID pandemic hit, we were all suddenly using the word “pandemic”. ALL THE TIME. I don’t think I had ever said the word “pandemic” before March of 2020. That’s what it’s been like having a child diagnosed with a disorder. Words you never used before you’re now saying all the time. And when you aren’t saying them, you’re thinking about them. (Or googling them.) Since Lev’s diagnosis of being on the autism spectrum, I have said the word “autism” thousands of times. A word that I never really said much before. And now it’s a normal part of our everyday vocabulary. Just like that. Overnight. Our entire world suddenly revolved around this one word. Autism. And I am not saying this is a bad or negative thing. It’s interesting. Your entire world, what you talk about and even what you think about, can change in an instant. I will never not talk about or not think about autism. It is woven into every part of our lives now. Why are only mothers expected to bear the child care responsibilities. All parents of children with disabilities (irrespective of their gender) need child-care leaves. Tell us your #LivedExperience Join the conversation @muchmuchspectrum In a move prioritising inclusion, the Supreme Court of India has said that denying child-care leaves to a mother, who is taking care of a child with disabilities, would violate the constitutional duty of the State to ensure equal participation of women in the workforce. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud and Justice J B Pardiwala said this earlier this week while hearing a petition seeking grant of child-care leave (CCL) to the petitioner, who is an assistant professor of Geography in Himachal Pradesh. Observing that the petition has raised a “serious” issue, the Supreme Court (SC) said that “Participation of women in the workforce is not a matter of privilege but a constitutional requirement of which, the State as a model employer cannot be oblivious”. The apex court also directed the state authorities to consider the plea by the petitioner, who is a mother. The court passed the ruling when the petitioner was denied leave to take care of her son, who suffers from certain genetic disorders since birth, because she had exhausted all her sanctioned leaves. State Govt asked to revise CCL Policy The state government has been directed by the Supreme Court to revise its policy on child-care leave (CCL) in order to make it consistent with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. “Ultimately, the plea does entrench on areas of policy and areas of State policy must be synchronous with constitutional safeguards. Yesterday I wrote a post about the book Far From the Tree. The book was published over four years ago, but is a very relevant read. I was so moved by some of the stories, specifically in the autism chapter, that I did some googling and found this video. Bill and Chris Evans were one of the case studies in the book. Even on a basic level, my middle autistic daughter may be 20 on paper, but she also still loves her playdoh and “Max & Ruby” episodes! She also likes “little kid” music, but she also loves music and other things which would be considered more “age-appropriate” too. This is who she is. * It’s just so sad, and it has got to be traumatizing that once they turn eighteen, they are “supposed to” abandon their areas of interest just because societal expectations say these things are “too babyish” or aren’t “age-appropriate.” NOT with my gown-up child! * If my middle daughter wants to enjoy Mickey Mouse colouring books, “Max and Ruby” episodes on repeat, and sleep in little 🧜🏻♀️ sheets with her plush toys (for comfort) for an enternity, that is fine with me, no matter what her age is! Cory is musically talented, plays soccer, does swimming, and is in a band. Although he is athletically gifted, life has been a challenge for him. He’s had to work harder than most to achieve the things we take for granted in life. He has also had to face things most of us do not have to face. Such as coaches that discriminate against him, students that bully him on a daily basis, teachers that do not support him, social disabilities and many other challenges. Recently, Cory has qualified for the WPIAL championships for swim and has been nominated by his swim coach as a nominee for athlete of the month. He has worked extremely hard to qualify for WPIALs this year, and we could not be prouder of him.
