TODAY is the LAST day of April + #autismawareness month. This is my #soap assistant + sweet 🌸 girl, Kahealani “Lani Girl” who turned 17 on March 20 th! Lani Girl is non-speaking with autism. It’s been almost 9 months since the Lahaina wildfires 😞 + many of you have reached out so lovingly to see how the kids were doing + how Lani was handling the situation. Transition + change: Can be challenging for individuals with autism, as they often prefer routine + predictability. Many people with autism have difficulty adapting to unexpected changes, whether small or significant, which can lead to anxiety + disruptive behavior. The morning after the fire, we learned that our home, neighborhood + downtown Lahaina were gone 😭 Lani began signing “come back” (home) throughout the day. The first thing she typed on her Augmentative Alternative Communication device was “NAGASAKO” 💔 @nagasako.okazuya a 120 year old store/deli in old Lahaina town also lost in the fire where we ate at least once a week 😞 the tears flowed not knowing how to tell her or if she would even understand the magnitude of it all. On the second day after incessant signing to “come back” (home), we decided to show her pictures + footage of the fire, knowing that Lani is a visual learner. She stared intently at the images + verbalized “uh- oh” over + over again. Then she signed “done” which led me to believe she understood we couldn’t go back home 😢 Lani always surprises me! Even though she developed a new behavior after the fire + chewed through about 10 t-shirt collars, in my eyes she seems to be adjusting to her new normal Upcountry, maybe better than the rest of us 😂 She has taught me to live beautifully in the present + is such a happy soul on this new start ❤️❤️ MAHALO 🙏🏽 to all of you Coconut 🥥 Beauties near + far, autism therapists past + present who jumped right in + sent Lani her familiar school supplies + favorite comfort items immediately after the fires 🥹 MAHALO to the Upcountry community for embracing our family so warmly. LOVE YOU ALL forever + ever!!!! #autismacceptance #specialneedsparent #lahainastrong #upcountrystrong xx, Sheri #saltwaterbuddhamaui

Our smiler is back!! The stitches of Harry’s eye have now naturally worked their way out and his left ‘eye’ is open as it has been for the past 16 years. This is the face that Harry knows and feels happy with. This is the smile I have been waiting for. Let’s be honest - have you as a parent ever think that your child doesn’t deserve this? Facing our child’s pain, surgeries, hospital visits, and treatments can be incredibly tough as parents. It’s natural to feel frustrated and resentful, as if their childhood is being stolen by these experiences. Reality is NO child deserves this. HOWEVER, if you shift your mindset to accept these challenges as part of my child’s medical journey. While it’s hard and unfair, it’s important to acknowledge that some children face long-term challenges. As parents, it’s important to accept and be prepared for whatever comes our way. - - #specialneedsmom #specialneedsfamily #autismmom #specialneedskids #specialneedsparenting #autismfamily #specialneedsparent #autismparents #downsyndrome #autismacceptance #specialneeds #medicalmama #specialeducation #asd #specialneedsparents #cerebralpalsy #autismparents #raredisease #ddx #autismawareness #advocatelikeamother #autismdad #autismlife #medicallycomplexkids #specialneedschildren - - Do you ever feel this way as a parent, my child doesn’t deserve this? What a comfort it was to have you with me before I went on and to know you could hear me from backstage. This guy is the sweetest, most thoughtful, courteous, and kind man. Reading to kids is so important! Here is how you can get the most bang for your buck! ✨️When reading to a child, pause briefly to explain the meaning of unfamiliar words. You don’t want to do this all the time–shoot for no more than 2 or 3 times in a typical children’s book. Kids can’t fully understand a story if they are not fully understanding the meaning of key words used in the story! ✨️When it makes sense, ask your child to predict what will happen next in the story and then pause to listen to their answer. Even if they give a short response or say they don’t know, it is still good learning to prompt them to stop and think. ✨️Kids often want to read the same story again and again. Each repeated reading of the story helps further develop their understanding of the story and further develops their vocabulary. #reading #read #readingcomprehension #scienceofreading #sor #teacher #teachers #instagramteachers #teachersofinstagram #education #sped #specialeducation #specialeducationteacher #specialeducatorsofinstagram #specialneedsparent #parent #parenting #parents #parentingtips #homeschool #homeschooling #homeschoolmom #homeschoolreading

Have you ever thought about your story? Especially during a hard season? What if we could reframe the trials from 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘦? To 𝘐 𝘸𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘎𝘰𝘥 𝘪𝘴 𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯? Last week I connected with a friend from high school. It’s been forever since we have been in touch but thanks to social media we still keep up with each other’s life. “𝘐 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘸’𝘴 𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘴 𝘏𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘢 𝘎𝘰𝘥 𝘮𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘭𝘦 𝘐 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘬𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘫𝘰𝘣 𝘴𝘰 𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘥𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘵.” It was like a hug through my phone. 🥹 And somehow it stirred up all the emotions at the same time. If I’m being honest, there are times that I hate it. I didn’t want to be a caregiver. I didn’t want to be an expert on medical terminology. I didn’t want to schedule my days around a feeding schedule and a pooping schedule. I didn’t want to have to understand granulation tissue. I have a feeling if everything worked out the way I wanted it to, my story wouldn’t be nearly as beautiful. 🤍🖤🤍🖤 #mysteriousMatthew #matthewmoments #specialneedsmom #specialneedsparent #raredisease #rarediseasemom #extrachromosome #careforthecaregiver #joyinthejourney #disabilityparent

As a special education teacher of 25 years, I have written hundreds of IEPs, and attended hundreds of IEP meetings. As a special education department chair, I have reviewed hundreds of IEPs, and participated as a designee for hundreds of IEP meetings. As a special education committee chair, I have participated in hundreds of special education eligibility meetings. During my career as a special education teacher, my goal was to ensure the academic, and social emotional needs were met for each of my students. Today, I am the Founder and Director of 2111 ECMA, LLC! As a special education advocate, I understand that IEP meetings can be overwhelming for parents. As an experienced advocate, I have seen the positive impact that an effective and data driven IEP can have on a child's academic and personal growth. I believe that every child deserves an education that is tailored to their individual needs and strengths. My Christian values guide us to nurture and support the children in my care, regardless of their challenges or disabilities. I will work closely with you to ensure that your child's IEP reflects their unique needs and goals. Before the IEP meeting, I will assist you in understanding the process, and making informed decisions. My nurturing approach ensures that you will feel supported and empowered throughout the entire process. At the IEP meeting, I will be there to support as we advocate for your child together. I aim for a productive IEP meeting characterized by constructive communication, where the IEP team collaboratively make data-driven decisions to address the academic, and social emotional needs of your child. With my expertise and compassion, you can trust that your child's education is in good hands. I am here to help you navigate the world of special education and ensure that your child receives the education they deserve. If you have a special needs child in school or getting ready to start school in the fall, you've probably heard of an IEP. But what exactly is an IEP? An IEP (Individualized Education Program) is essentially a game plan that spells out your child’s needs at school and how those needs will be met. #IEP #IEPtips #IEPadvocate #specialneeds #specialneedsparent #publicschool #publiceducation #specialeducation #learningdisability #neurodiverse #neurodiversity #neurodivergent

This last weekend our big girl turned 2! Becoming parents was already a massive journey for us, but little did we know the real journey was yet to come. Rosies new bed was delivered and assembled on Wednesday this week but Luke and I are pretty concerned that as her mobility continues to improve she's going to find a way to climb out as the sides aren't particularly tall 🙈. Our OT has been super supportive and has ordered an Accora Floor Bed which should be much safer if (or more likely, when) she attempts to escape! We also had a seating trial for a leckey squiggles seat. Rosie really enjoyed sitting in the seat but as she likes to rock to and fro so much our OT thinks a x:panda might be more suitable so we will trial one of those next! We finally got to wheelchair services (after our GP failed to sign off on Rosies application for almost 4 months). We have a Snazzi on order, she sits in there so nicely and I can't wait for it to arrive! Her atonic seizures are continuing to plague her (and we are still waiting for a helmet 🤦‍♀️), but (touch wood) the bigger seizures at present seem to only rear their ugly heads when she is becoming unwell. I think we probably need a slight medication tweak but I think we are very much on the up swing 🤞🤞🤞. #epilepsy #infantepilepsy #movementdisorder #globaldevelopmentaldelay #specialneedsequipment #specialneedsinfant #specialneedsparent
