One House Per Day no.586 by @forma.ny is A Square House โ a two-family co-house in the woods, 3 of 3. The series explores communal living in Upstate, New York with varying degrees of privacy. Each combines three typological elements: the gabled house structure, the stone wall, the open meadow, and balances the scale of the dense tall trees with a clear and bold architectural gesture. In this co-house, the unifying roof covers both private interior and shared exterior spaces, forming an open courtyard in the middle. Each family has its own corner of the square, positioned diagonally from each other, and a piece of a meadow to enjoy privately. Instagram cut off the top of the tallest tree and I couldn't crop it back in. Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus), native to northeastern North America and the upper Midwest, has a way of towering over other canopy trees in the forest, like in this summer photo taken from Sleeping Giant State Park in CT (New Haven's skyline is visible in the distance) which has a large basalt/trap rock ridge that stands out from the flat landscape of the surrounding Connecticut valley. Back to the white pine though: this species can absorb moisture directly from the atmosphere, through its needles, which enables it to reach heights beyond that what capillary action alone would usually allow.
