One Tree Hill When I was younger I thought that I could do everything myself. That I knew enough to make the things I wanted from life happen for me. But as I got older I realized that life is so much better when you surround yourself with smart and loving people. When you’re down, they reach out a hand and pull you back up. When they’re down, you do the same for them… and that feels good. You could have all the money and possessions in the world but if you don’t have anyone to share it with, what’s the point? This year has been relentless. This past week has been devastating. But through it all, I have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support. The kind words, flowers, cards, meals and more were just so kind. Tonight I was gifted this beautiful piece of art. Mia's friends might recognize it, it was the class of 2024 Art donation for the GHMCEF Gala back in 2014. I bid on it aggressively, yet didn't win the bid. @ktskis91 remembered that I really wanted it and though she still really loves it, wanted to gift it to me, hoping it would bring me joy. FRIENDSHIP The Spoonie rollercoaster ride can be a lonely one, for me, majority of my life has been this way. I grew up with a mother that had aquantances but her other daughter and I were her only true friends. It was the 3 of us against the world. That should i disappear, no one would notice. I grew up with the beliefe that I could never be safe in friendships because I was toss-away-able, unimportant and only good enough to be used, but not kept. I believed that I could never have a deep connection or a true loving friendship; that I was not worthy. I made peace with the fact that I was not destined to have friends. Recently, I stopped and looked around. I realized that this beliefe system has decinigrated, my walls have come down. I don't feel unworthy. I have people in my life that care. Friends that see me, hear me, and accept me, and not for what I can do or give them, but out of a mutual careing. I have people in my life that I would move mountains for, in a heart beat, without hesitation. People I would give the shirt off my back should they need it. I recently realized, I have people in my life that would do the same for me! These amazing souls are not around for the mountains I can move for them, or for my shirt, they are around just for me! I have a tribe of incredible friends surrounding me. What an euphoric feeling to have. Who knew friendships could be so magically transforming. I feel like no matter what I am facing, I have support, I have hands to help me up, I have ears to hear me and a open hearts that accept me. It has take 40+ years, but I can now say I have friends, and WOW does it ever feel phenominal! To my friends, I THANK YOU for the gift of your friendship, love and time. I appreciate you, your light and your acceptance. You are a give in my life that I cherish. Tag your tribe and tell them how much their presence in your life is a gift you are greateful for. I am very passionate about people having a safe place to talk and supporting others that are struggling. During my teens and twenties I lost a number of male friends to suicide and with the biggest killer among men we cannot ignore this growing problem. I want to end the stigma and facilitate something as simple as this that can massively benefit someone who may find themselves struggling. TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS AT THE MISSION Twas the night before Christmas, and my face filled with smiles, Because I had purchased a gift of 1 and 10 miles; I had done my research on the best races with care, and knew my gifts would help others, often quite rare; My family and friends all nestled in bed, visions of homelessness popped in my head, Snuggled down in my bed and cashmere wrap, I couldn’t help wondering about the poverty gap- I asked myself what’s important, what really does matter? How does one help those whose lives are now shattered? Away to the computer I flew like a cat, Researched the Mission in five minutes flat. The information was there, I just didn’t know, Gave me the information I needed to help their programs grow; The programs they run, give so many great cheer, The homeless, the hungry, the hurting they endear. I started to dream as I hit the hay; noticed warm bread and food on a tray, Given were coats, scarves and warm winter gloves; Groceries in bags, no shame, just love. I have been to busy to notice or been a skeptic, I knew I could change this with one little click; I sprang from my sleep and gave a little whistle. My heart felt light like the down of the thistle. Challenges, obstacles, detours, shortcomings, oversites, hurdles, mistakes, or anything else that gets in our way can feel discouraging and daunting. Sometimes these road blocks force us to reassess the route we're choosing in our life and make adjustments. Sometimes they are unsurmountable and force us to give up entirely and start over. Sometimes they challenge us to rise and meet them. Other times they ask us to grow and change. More times than not they require us to ask for help from the support network we have worked to build around us. In my case this support network is large, strong, and reliable but that did not happen by accident.
