What is the link between Chรขteau Margaux in France and Lebanonโs Domaine des Tourelles? ๐ฑ๐ง๐ท๐ Answer? Wine maker Faouzi Issa. In 2008, after spending sometime working at Chรขteau Margaux and Domaine Rene Rostaing, Faouzi returned home to Lebanon to work as chief winemaker at his families winery. Founded in in 1868, Tourelles is Lebanonโs oldest commercial winery and under Faouzi has won numerous international wine awards in recent years. Situated in the Bekaa valley in eastern Lebanon, Tourelles portfolio of wines are highly regarded and offer some of the most incredible quality wines for their price point. โฐ๏ธ Vineyards are located in the Western Bekaa. 1.050m (3,445 feet) above sea level. ๐ค Soils: Iron-rich gravel and limestone soils with clay sub-soils. ๐ Vineyards: Dry farmed (no irrigation). Practices: Treated organically, only sulfur and copper are used when needed. ๐ Old vines: Tourelles is home to some of the oldest vines in the Bekaa valley. < 70 years old. Today more than 150 years since it was established, Domaine des Tourelles is run by the next generation of the Issa & Issa el Khoury families โ making it the countryโs youngest winemaking team running the countryโs oldest winery. ๐ A couple of nights ago I opened this bottle of 2017 Domaine des Tourelles, Grande Cuvรฉe Pierre Brun and it was just fantastic. It is such a big and delicous wine with a finish that feels never ending. Produced from small parcels of old vine Syrah and Cab Sav this wine is ripe with plum, cherry and blackcurrent. The 14.5% alcohol brings this heat which is then beautifully balanced by that high altitude acidity. The soft, fine tannins left my mid palete feeling fuzzy and satisfied and the mocha and smokiness had me reaching back for a second sip.
