Exploring the folklore as well as how the Afro-Cuban religions and religious practices were written in the story. I really enjoyed reading the Cuba timeline - it was culturally rich. The writing was well done and easy to follow. The short chapters will have you flying through the book. I liked the Spanish sprinkled throughout the story as well, it added that extra depth. Overall, a really enjoyable read! July 30th -- Today is my day @turnthepagetours for A Tall Dark Trouble by @vvmontalban . Thank you @zandoyr for not only the physical Arc, but finished copy as well. I chose cosplaying as Ofelia aka Lela aka Ofi. This look in particular was when the twins decided to go to the club to investigate. It's not roses and unicorns instead it's darker. When Lela and Delfi turn 18 their powers seem to unlock much to the dismay of their mother. All three are keeping secrets for the safety of each other. When bodies and mysterious brujos begin appearing where the twins are, there's no denying something is wrong. The author did an amazing job portraying a new magic system. I was sucked in and couldn't stop. Granted the wickedness is probably why I had nightmares about maldeados. I'm good though. ✨REVIEW✨ Throwback By Maurene Goo I absolutely loved this!!💖 the Korean-American cultural references, the matriarchal love & the woven intricacies passed down with each generation, so much to love here Sam does nottt get along with her mom, Priscilla. Priscilla does not get along with her mom, Halmoni (grandma in Korean). Sam and Halmoni get along great🥹 To fix the first two relationships, mix together a rideshare app that takes you back in time, a homecoming court nomination, and befriend your mom when she was a teenager!! ⌛️It has the mother daughter perspective of freaky friday, the time travel mission of back to the future, and the teleportation of magic tree house!!!😂 Sam’s fiesty genZ attitude in 2025 + Priscilla’s assimilation in 1995 – being right in between Sam and Priscilla’s ages, this had me resonating with both characters so hard. Happy #SignedBookSundays. I was able to get my copy of THROWBACK signed by @maurenegoo last week during LA Times Festival of the Books. Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month begins tomorrow, so this is just another plug from me to add THROWBACK to your TBR for May, or anytime (because you should read Asian diaspora all year long). This is hands down one of my favorite books of 2023. You better believe this is going to be my go to recommendation for when everyone is asking for recommendations from friends at the end of the year. What if you had the opportunity to go back in time, a la BACK TO THE FUTURE, to learn more about one of your parents, to better understand them? This is what happens to Sam. After a huge fight with her mom, she ends up hailing a car service that takes her back to 1995, when her mom, Priscilla, was in high school. As a child of refugees, with a high school age niece, this novel is utter perfection. Goo does a great job showing some of the different experiences that are faced by children of immigrants vs their own children (the next generation). In Priscilla, I see my relationship with my parents. Parents working hard, not necessarily understanding the need for co-curricular activities; working at the family business after school and on weekends, studying, and on top of everything else, taking care of the younger siblings. Making my relationship with my parents fraught. In Sam, I see what I believe are similar experiences in my niece - parents giving her every opportunity to succeed and do well, without the need to work. However still chafing at what she believes to be restrictions and rules that don't make much sense. This book is great, I've also been re-reading the book via audio, narrated by Jennifer Sun Bell, and I'm still enjoying the book a second time around. I love the extra nuance we get to Sam by the narrator. Also thank you to @zandoyr for all the wonderful swag available during the THROWBACK Homecoming yesterday at #YallWest.
