🎁There are two types of moms right now... 🎅👌 those who were done shopping weeks ago, everything is already wrapped and ready for the holiday AND us mortals 🫠 who are still frantically finishing wishlists and will be spending the next three nights making the magic happen! 😅🤷‍♀️ Double tap 🤍 if you're like me and still have a pile hidden in your closet of gifts to wrap 🫣 No worries, here's a FREE GIFT for YOU to make that wrapping time feel better. 👌 When sitting on the floor we often resort to criss cross which makes it REALLY difficult to sit with your pelvic neutral and instead we sit back on our tailbone increasing the pressure on our lower backs -- yes, that's why it's so uncomfortable to get up. SO, instead, TRY THIS 👇 Try sitting up on your knees instead, your pelvis will be much more neutral and back straighter. Even if you grab a pad to place under your knees, this is a much preferred ergonomic position than sitting slouched on the floor. Another option? Get yourself up off the floor, girl! I often set up a card table for wrapping, but your kitchen counter or dinner table works too. 🤔 Stairs or Elevator? We're nearing the end of our Pelvic Progress Challenge and Day 11 asks you a simple question: When given the choice, do you take the stairs or elevator? 🤷‍♀️ Okay, sometimes it depends on the number of flights you're heading, up or down, but I'm challenging you to S L O W down a little, even when you're taking that one flight up or down at home, and alter how you are doing stairs. 👌 Here are 3️⃣ easy varieties will help challenge how your hips are working and give you better strength and stability with a simple set of stairs. First, try taking two at a time ✌️ no running, just stretch your walking steps to skip a stair in between. Next, (maybe save this one for home) go up them sideways, alternate sides to work both directions. Third (again, at home) hold on to a railing or wall as you go down, and go down backwards!! 😱 This is going to scare some of you... It's Day 9️⃣ of our Pelvic Floor Progress Challenge and what I'm going to ask you to do might scare a few of you, but trust the process and TRUST your pelvic floor! Do you make a habit of visiting the bathroom 🚽 before leaving, just as a precautionary measure? 😬 Many of us do (myself included🙋‍♀️) especially if we experience urgency or leakage concerns. However, consistently going when it's not absolutely necessary might inadvertently train your bladder to signal for a restroom break sooner than physically needed. 🫠 Over time, this habit can lead to a reduced tolerance for holding urine which means...you guessed it, unnecessary leaks, no one has time for that! 👉 Here's a challenge: If you're heading to a nearby location and you're aware there won't be a bathroom available, resist the urge to go "just in case." This small shift can help your bladder maintain a healthier and more natural holding capacity! 💦 Bladder leakage doesn't discriminate 🫣 affecting women of all ages and fitness levels, including high performing athletes. So much of my practice focuses on pregnancy 🤰 and postpartum, but it's important to highlight all groups of women that may be impacted by bladder leakage. 📢 BIG Announcement for Fearless Health Last Friday was 9 years since we launched our business with Outdoor Fitness Classes in Campbelltown. Since then, we have been through the ups and downs and many changes, including the big move to Dubbo. Do you hate shopping? 🤦🏼‍♀️ I dread it because I hate not being able to find clothes that fit and are comfortable. The fluorescent lighting, inconsistent sizing, and sometimes pressure from salespeople just make the experience worse. If you listened to the body grief episode on the Empowered Women's Health Podcast, you would have heard our conversation on letting go of old clothes, buying the size that fits and finding what suits your body. Today I had success finding clothes. 🥳 I wanted to share some shopping tips: 💁🏼‍♀️ Find the shops that cater to your body size. I went to City Chic for my bottoms and anywhere else for the tops. Pants are my struggle and after abdominal hernia surgery, I can't wear super sucked in pants. 💁🏼‍♀️ When trying on clothes, move in them. Sit down to see if you sit comfortably. Raise your hands to see how they move with you. Can you cross your arms in front? All the things that'll come up when you move in day to day life. 💁🏼‍♀️ Let go of your belly. Often, we stand there trying to suck bits in and make ourselves smaller. Other than the effects on your pelvic floor from constantly sucking in, you will be more relaxed if you can actually breathe. 💁🏼‍♀️ And again, choose that size that fits. The number does not define you or your worth. I ranged from 14 - 18, depending on the shop and item. I tried them all on to make sure they fit my body as it is now. We deserve to be comfortable, stylish and enjoy our bodies at any size or shape. Happy International Women's Day! Win with us 🎁 Today is a tough one to celebrate with so much flooding and devastation around. On top of what we have already been experiencing, it feels like a LOT! M E N S T R U A L C Y C L E // Our menstrual cycle can be such a glorious time, though sometimes... not so much! ❄️WINTER is part of the follicular phase, essentially it's the time where we bleed. 🌷SPRING is a great time, our energy returns, oestrogen increases (yes, that's right it isn't the enemy), and bring a creative streak. 🌞SUMMER is our prime! Our body is literally preparing us to "look great for a mate" - if you know what I mean... It's ovulation time, our energy is high, our oestrogen has peaked and we are glowing! 🍂AUTUMN creeps around and our energy may fade a little, we are a little slower, require a little more rest and relaxation. March is Endometriosis Awareness month. I'll be sharing my story of Endometriosis as the month goes on, however I wanted to share what this condition actually is... Endo can be a debilitating condition. It is where Endometrial-like tissue grows outside of the uterus, forming adhesions. These adhesions can grow and spread into numerous places including neighbouring organs causing a huge range of symptoms. Endo is so much more than "bad period pain", it is an inflammatory condition with no cure! Over the next month I'll be putting together a series of posts and videos to help raise awareness on this incredibly cruel condition. Is there something that you would like to know? As I sit drink my almond hot chocolate, rocking as a study in a room that’s not perfect, it’s messy, bed unmade, puppy staring wanting me to desperately lay down and give him pats all day, I ponder health and what it truly is and means to me 💖 Health isn’t something that we suddenly flick on after we change our habits for a day, week or even a year. It isn’t about showing up in active wear on Insta or drinking those clean eating kale smoothies. To me it is a continual and ever evolving practice of self care in that moment. It’s about being present, showing up for you and nourishing your mind body and soul in that moment. Taking each moment as it comes. As we look back over time we can see how these moments have shaped us and our health. What are you doing and choosing to nourish yourself with in this moment? For me, it’s studying. Exercise in Pregnancy Part 2 In the past exercise has been discouraged in pregnancy as it was thought to link to preterm birth. However, further studies have deemed that conducting exercise for 30 mins to 1.5 hrs. 3-4 times a week in a healthy singleton uncomplicated pregnancy holds no additional risk of preterm birth. Although exercise during pregnancy has been deemed safe there are precautions that the woman should be mindful of during exercise. Begin each session with an appropriate warm up and end sessions with a cool down. Staying hydrated – the pregnant woman is encouraged to drink plenty of water prior, during and following exercise. Should the woman start to feel dizzy, increased heart rate and dark coloured urine she should stop, rest and undertake treatment for dehydration. During pregnancy the woman’s body will undergo some obvious changes including growing breasts and belly. Suitable support garments can assist in reducing discomfort during exercise. Similarly, to dehydration the woman is to be mindful of overheating, continue drinking adequate amounts of water, wear comfortable cool clothing and exercise in either air-conditioned facilities or cooler weather. Take care with weight bearing exercises that involve direction change as balance is affected there is a potential for injury. Minimise periods of inactivity, standing for long periods of time is not only uncomfortable but it also causes blood to pool in your legs and feet, this position can cause decreases in your blood pressure. Following the first trimester it is strongly recommended to avoid lying on your back especially as the fetus grows, the uterus presses on the inferior vena cava, making blood flow difficult. As a result, the woman may experience dizziness, dyspnoea, increased heart rate and nausea, in later pregnancy it also holds implications for stillbirth. Contraindications to exercise in pregnancy exist; however, it should be noted this list is not exhaustive and the pregnant woman should always consult her health care provider. Exercise in Pregnancy Part 1. The Myths • Take it easy – you don’t want to hurt the baby • Don’t reach your arms above your head – it will snap the umbilical cord. Yes, this was legitimately said to me by colleague in the medical profession. • Don’t go upside down • Don’t get your heart rate above 100 • Don’t get your temperature above 37 – you'll cook the baby • Don’t work past 34 weeks • Don’t do any exercise at all • Don’t do any exercise on your back Some of these are just downright outrageous, however some stem from some truths so let’s look into that. Typically, if you are generally healthy and your pregnancy is progressing normally it is safe to continue exercise or commence safe physical activity. Not only is it deemed safe but it is generally encouraged. Some of the more hurtful myths around exercise are that it can cause miscarriage, low birth weight or preterm labor. As previously stated, if the woman holds no additional risk factors this is simply not the case. However, it is important for her to meet with her chosen healthcare provider early in her pregnancy to discuss her specific situation, this can help to exclude any unknown risk factors. Health professionals have a consensus on the following exercises as safe during pregnancy: • Walking – low impact on the joints and muscles • Swimming and water workouts – as the water supports your weight the exercise is low impact and assists in avoiding injury. Ensure to avoid heated pools and spas. • Stationary bike – due to the woman’s expanding belly and the impact on balance resulting in a falls risk, a stationary bike is considered much safer. • Modified Yoga – Prenatal yoga classes can be found in most areas and as the name suggests are specifically designed for pregnant women. Benefits include reduced stress, increased flexibility and stretching and teaches focused breathing all which bodes well for the laboring woman. • Strengthening exercises using body weight or low weight. The Combined Oral Contraceptive – “The Pill” What is the pill? In Australia there are a number of different brands consisting of two hormones, oestrogen and progestogen in varying constitutions. These hormones are similar to the ones your body naturally makes in your ovaries. Most of the pill packets are made up of 28 pills either 21 hormone pills and 7 without hormones (sugar pills) or 24 hormone pill and 4 sugar pills. Your healthcare provider can help you decide which formulation will work best for you. How does it work? The two hormones oestrogen and progestogen work together in order to prevent pregnancy, this is achieved by stopping ovulation from occurring. The pill also works to make the cervical mucus thicker preventing sperm from getting to the uterus. The sugar pills that contain no hormones cause you to have a withdrawal bleed, there are ways of cycling the pill in order to skip the withdrawal bleed. You can discuss how to do this with your healthcare provider. How effective is it? In typical use the pill is 91% effective and in perfect use it boasts a 99.7% rate. Typical use is referring to ‘real life’, it is very important that you take the pill correctly. If you forget to take your pills or run out you will be at risk of pregnancy. The effectiveness of the pill can be impacted by vomiting, diarrhoea and certain medications. Please remember to discuss all new medications with your healthcare provider and should you miss a pill contact them as soon as possible. In some circumstances there are ways of continuing on that will not reduce the effectiveness, however it may be safest to utilise an additional contraceptive such as a barrier method for the next 7 days. Hormonal Intrauterine Devices (IUD) – The Mirena What is the Hormonal IUD? In Australia we have two types of hormonal IUD available. They are the Mirena and the Kyleena, today we will be focusing on the Mirena. It is a small plastic T shaped device containing a hormone called levonorgestrel. The Mirena is placed inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy, a fine nylon thread is attached to the IUD and comes out through the cervix into the top of the vagina. How does it work? The Mirena works by blocking sperm from reaching or fertilising your egg. It does this by thickening the cervical mucus and making the lining of your uterus thin, making it hard for an egg to attach. It prevents normal sperm function within your uterus and fallopian tubes, preventing fertilisation. How effective is it? The Mirena boasts an impressive 99.9% efficacy, and when you think it lasts up to 5 years that’s a lot of peace of mind. Who can use it? The Mirena is suitable for most women who are seeking a reliable long-term contraceptive. It can be used by both women who have and haven’t had a pregnancy. Those who don’t want to have any more children, women spacing pregnancies and breastfeeding women. The Mirena has been proven to be very effective at reducing bleeding during your period and as such some will choose it for period management. Who can’t use it? In Australia we utilise the UK Medical Eligibility Criteria (UKMEC) to assess the suitability of a specific contraception for a person. People falling under the UKMEC3 or 4 will generally not be suitable, in regards to the Mirena it is not a suitable option for you if you are: • Are pregnant or have a possibility of being pregnant • Unusual bleeding from your vagina (this may not be a contraindication once investigated but you need to get it checked out). • Current or unresolved pelvic infections • Significant distortion of the uterine cavity • Current or past history of breast cancer If you have any other questions, I may be able to help with please pop them in the comments 😊 Note: This is information is not intended as medical advice, personal circumstances should be discussed with your healthcare provider.

Hormones of the Menstrual Cycle The Hormones that control our menstrual cycle: • Estrogen • Progesterone • Luteinising Hormone (LH) • Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) How do these hormones facilitate our menstrual cycle? Fluctuating levels of ovarian hormones estrogens and progesterone cause the endometrial changes of the uterine cycle. The high estrogen levels are also responsible for the LH and FSH surge which come from the pituitary and regulate the events of the ovarian cycle. So, lets break this down phase by phase. The hormonal involvement within the Menstrual Cycle; commences at day 1 with Phase 1: The Menstrual Phase – • Bleeding starts and the uterus sheds, ovarian hormones estrogen and progesterone are at their lowest normal levels and gonadotropins LH and FSH are beginning to rise. Moving into Phase 2: The Follicular Phase – • The endometrium begins to rebuild itself under the influence of rising estrogen. During this phase estrogen also synthesises progesterone receptors in the endometrial cells, readying them for interaction with progesterone. Phase 3: The Ovulation Phase – • This occurs in response to the sudden release of LH from the anterior pituitary. The release of the egg ‘’ovulation’’ results in converting the ruptured follicle into the corpus luteum our progesterone producer. Finally, Phase 4: The luteal phase – • The endometrium is preparing for implantation of the embryo. Progesterone is rising from the corpus luteum and will act on the estrogen primed endometrium. In the event an embryo has implanted, progesterone and estrogen will continue to rise inhibiting the anterior pituitary from releasing LH. If fertilization has not occurred the corpus luteum will begin to degenerate as LH blood levels decline, progesterone levels drop. Removing endometrial hormonal support setting the stage for menstruation phase to begin again.
