Thank you all for being my LIGHT (my SPRING) in moments and allowing me to be yours in others. This has been by far the most beautiful and cathartic experience and also the most CLEAR that I have been able to observe my personal postpartum emotions so vividly that it will help me to help others- truly my passion and mission. It is Maternal Mental Health month and on this month and EVERY month may part of my mission be guiding myself, my daughter, my sons, my clients to honor and hold space for their emotions- all valid. My fave new parenthood emotion emoji is this: 😵‍💫 lol There ain’t no hood like PARENTHOOD I’ll tell you that! It literally sling shots you into a juicy little cocktail of EMOTIONS - often a few opposite emotions at the same dang time 😜🎢 (but dont be scared- its great! LOL) The deepest amount of love and also the deepest amount of what the heck. Lol I came across this art by @themayfairgroup and I love it, especially the small print that says you gotta feel it to HEAL it and you wont feel like this forever. No toxic positivity here 🙅🏽‍♀️ but also, there IS a lot of positivity here! I LOVE my babies gosh I could cry right now because they are little slices of heaven and they are my WORLD Im so grateful for them and obsessed with them literally they amaze me and they teach me so much ahhh 🥹 and also: 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😂😂 Don’t think that I didn’t just hand my baby on over to my hubby and say okayyyyy Im done right nowww 🤪😅 You guys- NOBODY has this figured out first of all. NOBODY is perfect. We all have bad moments, moments of feeling like a failure, wtf moments, CRY moments, exhausted moments, what other moments?? OVERSTIMULATED.. definitely overstimulated phewww. I just want you know this.. I dont ever want you feel bad for feeling bad sometimes. We are all doing our best and we are HUMAN ♥️ Keeping it real, feeling what we feel, not feel guilty for it (because holy cow, there’s enough things that we feel guilty for in parenthood already right?) All this to say: YOUR EMOTIONS ARE VALID ✋🏽 And you are amazing. And you are most likely inspiring someone around you just by being your gorgeous soul of a self! My hope for you is that when you feeling low there is someone around you that just so happens to be feeling UP to brighten your day and remind you emotions are fleeting, things change, feel everything, and remind yourself you are a beaming ray of unicorn sprinkles even in the moments you dont feel like it 🦄💜

A failure is never a setback. It’s simply an unsolicited learning curve 💫 On your postpartum journey, you’ll face many hurdles 😖 In fact, I recently noticed that our families wanted more help not just with sleep and postpartum, they also wanted more help with sleep science. This required a lot of learning and reading on my part and training on my teams’ part. So, what did I do? ❗I educated myself and discussed this with clients. I think it is important to have an open conversation with our families about what we know and can implement. ❗I have talked to my team to make sure we are consistent, allowing our clients to replicate it so they can be successful. 🤷 With your postpartum journey, your roadblocks are: ⚫ Sleep issues - Newborns are a lot of work. They require so much of your time and energy. ⚫ Recovery - Postpartum means you have to go through labour, This is a huge energy and resource expenditure, and recovery takes time. ⚫ New Life Roles -When you bring home a new baby, your entire world changes. Your routine, your home life changes. What you can do to help with this: ✅ Utilize as many of your resources as you can. If your family offers support of any kind, take it. Ask for what is important to you. ✅ Prep for the inevitable. The less you think about how your household runs, the easier it is for you to concentrate about your recovery. ✅ Ask questions! Ask what to expect during your postpartum period and how you can help make this time easier on yourself and your family. There’s a lot of emphasis on Mother’s snapping back or hurrying up to put themselves back together or get their lives “back on track.” But you have to remember that most times, especially when they come unexpectedly, our children come into our lives to disrupt it, Because the life we were living was not “on track” it was not divinely aligned. They have come to course correct and bring it, bring us into divine alignment. Don’t rush your healing, don’t rush your postpartum. It took over a year to bring these beautiful beings into this world. We take years to nourish, grow and raise them to embrace their full selves and their identity. When we become Mothers, we are stepping into a new identity. If it takes years upon years to help our children understand, shape and embrace their full identities, why do we expect to step into our new identities as Mothers in a matter of weeks? Why do we expect our bodies to snap back in a few weeks, after months of transformation? Be gentle with yourSelf Mama. Take as long as you need. Diastasis Recti is a common effect of childbirth. Many times it is overlooked during our postpartum care and many women do not realize they have it. For many of us, this oversight doesn’t impact our lives much. As out of the 60% of women who experience abdominal separation or diastasis recti, 30% of postpartum women’s diastasis recti will not resolve itself on its own after 8 weeks postpartum. This means that many of us may actually be experiencing diastasis recti and not even realize or ever realize because it resolves itself. But there are some women, those 30%, who may need a little additional help. But first you have to make sure a separation is still there at 8 weeks postpartum. To determine this, you can try the finger test. There's nothing I love more than hearing feedback like this: 😌⁠ ⁠ "..Huge part in making me a confident new mom.." 🙌🌙⁠ ⁠ 🗣 When we first worked with our client, she was unsure of how she’d even survive a night without us. She stated that she was unsure of how to properly care for her baby and manage her time. Overall she didn’t feel confident. Her goal was to feel comfortable making decisions for herself and her baby and manage her time well so she didn’t feel overwhelmed. She was determined to learn her baby’s cues and her own strengths and limitations and when to seek help. As we worked with her - she was such a keen learner and wanted to absorb and know everything about her baby. “A-ha”, that’s it! ☝ Ever had one of those magical moments? I have and it completely changed the way I now approach approaching and tackling bumps on the road with families I work with 👀. It happened when I’ve noticed the struggles of my clients do not end at night and continue in the day as well since they would tell me “Hey Sarah, we are so tired because during the day…” and let me know the struggles they’ve been experiencing. This has enabled me to: 🌟 Probe and ask more open ended questions to get more information. I summarize this information back to confirm what I heard. Why? I don’t like to incorrectly hear my clients - their opinions and what they to me is important because Nightowl Nursing is there to help support them in their postpartum recovery and newborn’s growth. 🌟 I start digging into scholarly literature, medical recommendations and advice, my own professional experience, as well as all my book, this gives me a starting point to find similar situations. This allows me to give my clients options on possible solutions to try out. I build up rationale as well. Why? Starting something new is so difficult - giving choices as well as the explanation around it makes it so much easier to justify the possible change. 🌟 After two weeks of implementation, I ask for feedback and measure the outcomes with them. We work out and tweak the solutions. Ever since I’ve started doing this, it has really improved my communication and implementation process with every client ever since. Motherhood. Is. Hard. It's all that you expect and everything that you don't. It is the highest highs and the lowest lows. Too much is expected of us with too little support. We get forgotten. We get lost. We get rageful, frustrated, snappy, irritable, overwhelmed in balancing all of it. And then we get told in the line at Panera by some cute little old lady to "enjoy every moment because it goes so fast". And then we feel guilty because sometimes, on some days, *enjoying* is the furthest thing from our minds, we are simply trying not to drown. I wished someone had told me this before my first baby boy. I wish someone had looked at me and said, " this thing you are about to do called motherhood, with this soul you're about to bring here, is extremely HARD. It's not supposed to be easy. It breaks you open, it's a fast track to see every part of you that is crying out for attention, it will make your heart ache, it will take you through every emotion possible (sometimes in the span of 15 minutes ) and it's ok. You are ok." Then maybe I wouldn't have tried to make it something it wasn't supposed to be. When you bring a soul here, and choose to share another life with your own, a completely new version of yourself is created and that doesn't mean you are ONLY her- only a mother- it means that she's going to need time to learn, to grow, to make mistakes, to weave into all other parts. She needs love. She needs space. She needs support to evolve and grow right along with her baby. I'm so excited to share this with you all! 😬 I actually went for hot yoga 2 times a week at least once this month! 😌 It may not sound like much, but it was a biggie for me! It made me so proud of myself. 🎉 This is because with my health and how tired I feel all the time, being sluggish was my new normal. There had been times when I would come home and I skipped a meal to sleep 😴! I know it sounds cliché, but it's true: Perseverance pays off. 💪 It's not always the big milestones—it's the little ones that really add up. 🔥 Sometimes all you need is some guidance from someone who's done this! The truth is, you can do anything you want if you put your mind to it—and these are the tips that helped me do just that: ✨ BE SHAMELESS. Okay, it isn’t what you think. Let go of that fear of burdening others - YOU. ARE. NOT. I know it can be hard. Talk to your friends, family, anyone who love you. They are willing they are to help. ✨PRIORITIZE. Remember what they said about putting a mask on yourself before putting one on others? This applies to life! In order to keep caring for others, care for yourself. Take that 3-4 hour nap. I promise you, you’ll feel like a new person with sleep. ✨ KEEP EXPECTATIONS LOW. You must be looking at this tip and wondering: why have have low expectations. Striving for perfection is great, but is it worth it for the expense of your physical and mental health? Follow the 80/20 rule, 80% of our results come from 20% of our effort. 😳 Just put in just enough and you’ve done great things. Great is what we are looking for so you can enjoy those baby snuggles. Let’s address some concerns regarding Postpartum Hemorrhage! 🩸 Another common comment from women, after they’ve have had their baby is that they didn’t remember anyone telling them, nor did they realize, that they would have to have their bellies pressed and pushed on following their delivery 🥴🥴🥴. This is actually a pretty standard practice following the delivery of the placenta, as I mention in my e-book (unless a patient blatantly refuses). However, this is what could happen when that bleeding becomes excessive!
