{Nelson Family Vineyards} One of the prettiest vineyards I have ever been to for a Harvest Host. After we checked in we made our way to the back of the property. We found ourselves the first ones to arrive so we had our pick of location. We parked in a big open field overlooking the vineyard. We settled in and drove to the tasting room and had ourselves a couple of flights. It was a perfect day to sit outside and enjoy the sun and wine. The kids loved playing on the grass. Continuing on from my reel of the horse - at the Tuilière you can come and sit and relax on the terrace. Wines are available by the glass (or bottle) and very reasonable. You can order various platters or one of the daily specials. For me it is a great place to come and relax - bring a book and relax in the sun. The vineyard is very innovative in the activities they offer in the summer - trott bikes through the vines, dinner under the stars in the vineyard, concerts and so many other things. Back to our tour of the best Chardonnays of the Finger Lakes—which is synonymous with saying some of the best Chardonnay in the world. I’ll do a full recap of our FLX vs Burgundy tasting soon, but because I just had one of the best tasting dinners ever at @kindredfare with @trestle_31 last night I wanted to post a special celebration of @nova_cadamatre_mw . All of her wines were amazing, but none more so than her stunning 2022 Chardonnay. This same Chardonnay performed very well in the event I hosted last week where our (future) Glen Hollow Chardonnay (currently @heronhillwinery Macri Vineyard) went up against some impressive white Burgundies. Both FLX wines were solidly in the conversation as bests of the night up against those from Meursault, Puligny Montrachet, and Chassagne Montrachet. Nova is doing a LOT of work on both coasts (and in the Midwest!) and everything I’ve had has been first rate. Rightly, we are very proud here of our European winemakers who have brought so much to this region, but Nova is one of the great American auteurs of wine that have made their homes here. Planting Day here at the estate...Planting our Chardonnay Block with Dijon Clones 76 & 96 (about 1,000 plants) and a row of Pinot Noir Clone 37, a new clone to the vineyard, in another location. The wines produced off this chardonnay block will be named after my mom as a way of honoring her hard work, wisdom and encouragement she always provided me as I was growing up. Our name is Red Mountain. Right now, the cheatgrass is blooming throughout our region, a deep red color that paints the hills and vineyard rows. Our name is a little bit of a misnomer: the mountain is more of a hill, and most of the year it’s not really red. But we are named for the drooping brome (or cheatgrass) that dominates our landscape, and for a few weeks a year in April and May our region turns stunningly, dramatically red. Drooping brome prospers in a region like ours: it loves sagebrush and an arid climate. And while Red Mountain is gorgeous all year round, now is the time to visit if you’d like to see why we’re called Red. (Other than because we produce remarkable red wines, of course 😉)
