Review Sick 2022 Blu-ray Rating: 4/5 Sick is another self aware slasher by writer Kevin Williamson that uses social commentary on a relevant topic to heighten tension and fear. Williamson had ventured into the TV world after the 90s cinema horror-thriller market gained him well earned iconic status. This film in particular is a key example of a writer still having the ability to shift the sub genre into fresh directions. Filmmaker John Hyams built his career in the action genre but in 2018’s All Square he shifted away to drama and thrillers with 2020s Alone. Hyams had shown cinematic flared with Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, and he feels well suited to the thriller genre. The story gives us little understanding to these characters but given the COVID setting it’s easy to jump on board as everyone was attempting to isolate. Hyams and Williamson waste little time in setting the scene with a creepy opening that concludes with a violent death. The structure is similar to that of Scream’s setups and you can’t fault the story for using this template as it’s the perfect opening to prepare its audience. The film quickly settles on our central characters and subverts expectations with a home invasion-survival structure. The pacing is relentless once everything kicks off and Hyams doesn’t fall into the trap of forcing characters into unbearable decisions. The violence is never off putting and it’s one of the rare modern slashers that leans into the less is more methodology. Hyams was lucky to be gifted a screenplay of this strength after proving his ability to handle similar themes with his last film. It’s not exactly unpredictable, but its story is well constructed with strong direction. ~ Sick ~ •Pelicula. Juega. Durante la pandemia, Parker y su mejor amiga deciden realizar la cuarentena en la casa familiar del lago donde estarán aislados del mundo... o eso creían. Película que está en el catálogo de Prime Video. Thriller de terror. Slasher. La película está buena. Es la típica de casa aislada a la que van dos pibas (en este caso el contexto de pandemia ayuda a justificar que estén solas) y que aparece un loquito que quiere matarlas aunque no sabemos porqué. Obvio que la peli cae en los clichés del género pero me parece que está bien lograda. Entretiene, tiene tensión y algunos posibles sustos traicioneros. Está bueno que no se van a lo paranormal para justificar lo que pasa. Tiene una explicación PONELE que lógica. Es medio delirio? Si obvio pero es una película Slasher qué pretendes? Por supuesto que no es para el Oscar pero juega. Además es cortita, menos de horita y media. Además me gustó que las pibitas de la casa no son las típicas que hacen estupideces al punto que uno se termina poniendo del lado del intruso. No, acá bastante bien ellas. Y te repito: la peli no es wow pero juega. RECENSIONE: #Sick. L'ho guardato per fratm #KevinWilliamson (sceneggiatore di Scream, So cosa hai fatto, The Faculty ecc), ma ho trovato tanti elementi apprezzabilissimi. Il film inizia con una scena d'apertura ottima (in vero stile Williamson), poi diventa un po' lento per un bel pezzo. Ma, quando finalmente la mattanza parte, Sick non molla mai, diventando fondamentalmente una scena di inseguimento estesa (sapete che sono il mio punto debole e Kev SA come scriverne una). #GideonAdlon è fantastica nei panni della moralmente ambigua protagonista Parker e si approccia al ruolo con la giusta quantità di urla, angoscia e determinazione che ruoli come questi richiedono. La sceneggiatura è efficiente nel fornire brividi slasher di base, spruzzi di autoconsapevolezza alla Williamson e frecciatine sui tempi attuali ed è stato surreale vedere cose legate alla pandemia. Ma ciò che eleva davvero Sick è la regia di #JohnHyams. Il suo stile registico è implacabile quanto il villain, con un sacco di piani sequenza inaspettati e ben coreografati, che raramente sembrano piani sequenza a causa del costante tumulto. Sick (2022) Another brilliant movie that I've managed to get a physical copy of. I really feel like this movie doesn't get talked about much but it's one of my favourites from last year. Written and produced by the one and only Kevin Williamson. It's set during the COVID pandemic which finds 2 friends Parker and Miri go into quarantine together. The movie starts off with another guy being killed by a masked killer and it's a brutal beginning. The plot is really unique and there's loads of cat and mouse chase scenes that are awesome. The kills are brilliant and pretty brutal and there are so many twists and turns that it really keeps you guessing. The acting is superb and the twist/reveal towards the end is awesome. #johnhyams’ #sickmovie continues the trend of films set during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this one is specifically set during the early days of the lockdown, in which the two protagonists, Parker and Miri, isolate themselves in Parker’s lake house during the lockdown. Making a movie like this requires capturing a sense of isolation, especially with how the sets are chosen and designed, as described by production designer @jennymollerdesign: "We found an inherently isolated location. Within that house, we were very intentional about how we decorated it. If you notice, there are few family photos or personal items in the house. That was intentional because it didn’t look like a place that a happy family had spent a lot of time in. We wanted to highlight Parker’s isolation, not just the COVID isolation, but within her own family. Her emotional isolation, if you will. I also wanted the space to be comfortable, but I didn’t want it to be cozy. We went over the top for the grocery store because I wanted to convey the sense of fear we all had. Of course, I didn’t go into any grocery stores that looked that post-apocalyptic when I was shopping for groceries. But it felt that way. The first time you go to a grocery store, or any public place after stay-at-home orders were put in place, there is nothing there. There’s a sense of anxiety when you don’t know what’s coming. We were looking at it from the other end. We knew that we would get through it, which would be okay. However, at that time, we had no idea. All of us have seen enough post-apocalyptic movies to know that feeling. I watched #worldwarz right before, and that great grocery store scene did act in some way as an inspiration for the grocery store scene that opens Sick." I didn't expect much out of this film, I figured it be one of those straight-to-VOD films but boy was I proven wrong. After watching it, I can't remember the last time where a slasher flick had characters that made SMART decisions (like really smart). Even in the middle of being chased by a murderer, the characters involved still managed to use their brain and get the best of them and that was probably one of the reasons why I cared for them despite little to no character development which kinda makes sense given its small runtime. But yes, you get the bare minimum when it comes to the characters involved however, what put this film on the map is the fact the horror sequences are actually quite decent here and the filmmakers aren't afraid to change it up, some scenes there would be a struggle and others involves a chainsaw. The constant change where you never know how someone will die and I liked how they attempt to do a sort of one-shot sequences here and there which added a great deal of suspense and there would be several standout kills that were amazing. Story-wise, I thought they were great and added their own unique twist to it without it ever feeling like just about every pandemic film since 2020 where there comes a point where you just don't know where the film is going and that is exciting to watch. Let's be real here, I don't think I'm the only one who is sick of seeing a film about the pandemic given the fact we are living through it. Thankfully, the film is also self-aware in that fact and it does tend to provide some comedic bits but once the kidnappers get involved, all of that is thrown out. Sick was a decent film that to me felt like it needed a director who is better at balancing horror and humor. Williamson and Crabb's writing is solid and is more than willing to take shots at both extremes on the pandemic spectrum, but it just didn't go far enough. The pacing also feels a little weird. Hoy buscando que mirar me encontré con "Sick" y me llevé una grata sorpresa. Recién iniciada la pandemia, Parker y su amiga Miri deciden realizar la cuarentena en la casa del lago de su familia para estar aisladas de los demás pero eso no será posible. Una película de terror muy sólida, un slasher que nos mantiene tensos desde el primer minuto hasta el final de la película. Un guión que no aporta nada nuevo pero está muy bien ejecutado y está a cargo de Kevin Williamson, guionista de "Scream" (1, 2 y 4), "I Know What You Did Last Summer" y "The Faculty", entre otras. We discuss the performances; how the characters are tenacious and clever; the good cinematography, especially in subtly evoking tension; slut-shaming; the film's possible political interpretation; and the film's similarities to SCREAM. Two of us enjoyed the film. But one of us hated it for its lack of innovation and retreading familiar terrain. We review THE SON, Florian Zeller's drama starring Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern, Zen McGrath, and Vanessa Kirby, about parents trying to help their struggling son. Based on Zeller's own stage play — and co-written by Christopher Hampton — the film is a prequel to THE FATHER. We can't say with certainty — because it's only January — but this film may have afforded a couple of us our most visceral reactions of the year. Two of us hated the film. One of us agreed with the criticisms, yet found the film emotionally resonant. Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern, and Vanessa Kirby give good performances; Anthony Hopkins is excellent in a scene-stealing cameo. CRÍTICA SEM SPOILERS - SICK (2023) Ambientado em 2020, em meio à crescente tensão da pandemia, SICK mostra Parker e sua melhor amiga, Miri, indo para a casa do lago da família para ficarem em quarentena sozinhas. Bem, é o que elas pensavam. Enquanto Parker não parece estar muito oprimida pela ameaça do vírus, Miri tenta seguir à risca todas as regras para manter sua saúde intacta, mas um assassino mascarado as observa e, à medida que o filme avança, ele chega mais perto. A primeira metade de SICK se encarrega de contar ao público quem são esses personagens, o que fazem da vida e quais são seus problemas (pontas que serão amarradas lá no final). Feito isso, o bicho pega! Várias sequências de perseguição se desenrolam trazendo algumas surpresas e fazendo a adrenalina subir até que não haja mais para onde fugir. É possível assistir SICK em qualquer época e compreender do que ele se trata com muita clareza, porque o longa não é ambientado na pandemia por acaso. O fato é que, sem o contexto do confinamento, este filme não faria sentido algum, afinal, SICK significa DOENTE. Dá para criar teorias, mas acho que é difícil acertar em cheio. O filme realmente foge do óbvio. O filme está na mira dos fãs da franquia PÂNICO, pois é do mesmo roteirista. No entanto, não há metalinguagem, e sim a contextualidade. Há referências discretas, mas não há sátira ao gênero do terror. É um slasher, então personagens são assassinados, só que a força do filme não está na matança, mas sim nas cenas de perseguição (com jumpscares, só para constar). Há ambientes e personagens além daqueles que o trailer apresenta, mas a conversa sobre quem é o assassino ou quem vai sobreviver é deixada completamente para o público, porque não há tempo para essa discussão. Карантин, слава богу, закончился, а Dance Secret Bar продолжается! 🙃 Наш секретный ингредиент – желание заниматься тем, что любишь вопреки всевозможным НО! Теперь это закрытая творческая группа из открытых творчеству людей. И я горжусь каждой, кто в нем есть. This song is getting us through this rainy day happening in Brooklyn. Beth Million was 14 years young when she taught herself the guitar, she had never studied music. She started out doing musical theater and performing lots of covers before she had the courage to use her voice to create her own art. Once she found her voice, she never stopped using it. She shares her message to be, “That’s why the idea of goals...and of having benchmarks don’t seem condusive to me. If I don’t think I hit them, I think I’m messed up. If I’m having some sort of process that means it’s working.” We’re loving the message on consistency, and that’s what it takes to be a real artist. Beth has two hits out and they don’t disappoint.
