Since I restrained myself last week and managed to chose 5 boardgames I wouldn't want to miss ever again, or, as @magicandmeeples put it, where the only ones I could keep from my collection, I decided to go all in for this week's #topictuesdayšŸŽ² by @yvonnes_spellenkast and the theme of my own choosing: great literary themed boardgames. I'm sure Yvonne managed to put it in better words, but I already fought with the collage making tool and don't have the nerves to look it up. I'm sure you get my meaning. There's Unmatched Cobble and Fog, starring the main characters from some awesome Victorian-era classics, which probably will be the only Unmatched to ever make it to my shelf. I'm really bad at offensive boardgames, but I love the theme on this one. Then there's The Elder Sign, based on the Lovecraftian Story Universe, and hey - it's a co-op! šŸ˜ There's also Grimms Masquerade, which mostly works on Grimm's Fairytales, but since there's also the Beast and I didn't have my Grimms Collection at hand I took The Gender Swapped Fairy Tales for the pairing - highly recommend!! And last but in no ways least there's Marrying Mr Darcy! Sometimes it's better to become a spinster than end up with Mr Collins ... šŸ«£ Honorary mention goes to the Discworld Boardgame. Just because. It's quite frankly a one-on-one adaption of the early Discworld novels, and I featured it already last week, so no picture today. If you like my approach of pairing books with thematic related boardgames you might want to consider joining in on #boardsandbooks - just dm me for more information! šŸ˜Š #cobbleandfog #marryingmrdarcy #prideandprejudice #callofcthulhu #theeldersign #grimmsmasquerade #grimmsfairytales #genderswappedfairytales #victorianengland #discworldboardgame #discworldnovels #boardsandbooks

I'm a day late but that's okay because @claudia_y_andy chose "dragons" for our May edition of #boardsandbooks! I can't NOT post anything Fourth Wing so we're doing it today! . . Fourth Wing by @rebeccayarros follows Violet Sorrengail, a young woman who enrolls in a brutal war āš”ļø college to become an elite dragon rider. Cadets are faced with grueling challenges with the hope of one day bonding with a dragon to obtain the powers the bond holds...or die trying. If you enjoyed The Hunger Games growing up, this one is a must-read. . . In Res Arcana by Sand Castle Games, players are Alchemists collecting essences šŸ”„ ā˜ ļø to craft artifacts and claim places of power. The dragon cards are very powerful for victory points! . . Shoutout to @blendedfamilygamers @getintogames and @gamingoverboard for the monthly šŸ·ļø tag! . . #boardgames #games #gamer #gamenight #twoplayergames #boardgamesfortwo #boardsandbooks #resarcana #resarcanaboardgame #fourthwing #rebeccayarros #fantasy #dragons #dragon #tabletopgames #tabletopgaming #boardgamegeek #bgg #boardgamesofinstagram

At 15th of May it was time for #boardsandbooks and I know Iā€˜m a little late to the party but I want to share my pairing with you. This great idea is still run by @boardgamingoverboard the theme was chosen by @claudia_y_andy This time it is all about dragons šŸ‰ and so I can proudly present one of my first card games. It is called ā€žDIE PORTALE VON MOLTHARā€œ and my husband and I played an still play this game when we are on holidays or even when I have to go to hospital for a treatment because my health is not good. So this little card game is a special one for me. The book I chose of course had to be THE HOBBIT It is one of my favorite books and it always feels like coming home when I enter the shire. Bilbos journey always reminds me that every time something unexpected can happen even to meet a dragon šŸ‰ So this time it was a really special pairing for me and Iā€˜m so thankful to share it with you šŸ«¶

So it that time of the month again for #boardsandbooks and todayā€™s theme as chosen by @claudia_y_andy is ā€œDragonsā€ So I have realized that having kids really cuts into your time to read but there are plenty of great kids books with dragons like this adorable little chapter book for beginning readers, Dragonā€™s Fat Cat. Of course I had to choose the absolutely adorable and charming game of Flamecraft with its friendly dragons to pair along with such a sweet book. Thank you @gamingoverboard @getintogames and @blendedfamilygamers for starting this enjoyable hashtag. #flamecraft #boardgames #boardgamesofinstagram #kidsbooks #bookstagram #dragonsfatcat

We've dragons visiting for this month's #boardsandbooks as that is the theme suggested by @claudia_y_andy When we had the theme 'animals' last year I went with the same combo of Robin Hobb's Farseer trilogy and Res Arcana because both feature a wolf and Nighteyes is the best. This pairing works equally well for 'dragons'. The way they are presented in Realm of the Elderlings series is fascinating. šŸ“– Books: epic fantasy series spanning multiple trilogies which are written so vividly that you'd swear that the author is just recounting the events which she has personally witnessed. šŸŽ² Boards: no board, only cards, and only 9 of them per game but they combine in the most satisfying ways. Res Arcana is a great engine builder with all sorts of magic users and dragons depicted on the cards. šŸ“–šŸŽ² #boardsandbooks is a monthly hashtag for which we have @gamingoverboard to thank for and it's always fun! Pair a game with a book around the same theme and join us. šŸ”„ #boardgames #brettspiele #drustveneigre #boardgamesofinstagram #robinhobb #bookstagram #resarcana #dragons #jeuxdesociete

šŸ² #BoardsAndBooks - Dragons šŸ² Very excited to be joining in with the #BoardsAndBooks challenge for the first time proper! The theme of dragons (chosen by @claudia_y_andy ) was a bit tricky for us, but we managed to do it just as the sun was setting. Of course the book is the Hobbit with the infamous Smaug (which Ben thought was pronounced sm-or-g, rather than sm-ow-g when he first read the book), who is the perfect depiction of a dragon to us. The game is the Princess and Dragon expansion to Carcassonne which is fairly new to us, but we love playing with it. Mainly so we can be mean to each other and destroy farmers and knights. How do you think we did? When you hear the word dragon, which dragon do you think of? B O A R D SĀ  šŸŽ²Ā  &Ā  šŸ“šĀ  B O O K S šŸ‡ŖšŸ‡ŗ it's #boardsandbooks time, and for this month the theme is dragons as chosen by @claudia_y_andy. there's a big dragon shaped hiatus in my collection, so I reverted to stealing a book from the kids. it is a funny book, even after reading it approximately 548 times: The Knight Who Said 'NO!' from Lucy Rowland, illustrated by Kate Hindley. Dutch translation is by the brilliant Bette Westera. so, how to highlight the book the best? exactly, I'll stopmotion it for you. specifically the part where the angry dragon lands in town and seems not angry but very sad. it's lonely. (no worries, it ends well, it gets to do sleep-overs with the tiny knight.) I paired the former sad dragon with a loner boomworm dragonkin from one of my favourite sologames Roll Player. #boardsandbooks was started by @gamingoverboard and @blendedfamilygamers, now supplemented by @getintogames. no idea what the theme will be for next month, the All Powerful Excel hasn't been consulted yet. šŸ‡³šŸ‡± boeken en bordspellen. šŸ’›. en dat dan met draken. heb jij deze middeleeuwse beesten in je spellen- of boekenkast?

Itā€™s #boardsAndBooks time and this month the theme is dragons chosen by @claudia_y_andy Other than The Hobbit, the first book I read that really featured dragons was the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey. I fell in love with the world and have read every single Pern book. Some of them arenā€™t great but I love the original series (and the Harper Hall series) and come back to them over and over. The first book in the series, Dragonflight, is shown here and if you like dragons you should give it a try. I paired it with Flamecraft because adorable dragon meeples! But also, I feel like the Pern books and Flamecraft are a similar vibe. Both are not too heavy, easy going, and each has a beautifully rendered world. Have you read any of the Pern books? #bgg #boardGameGeek #AnalogGames #tableTopGames #gamer #boardGames #boardGamesOfInstagram #bggCommunity #boardGaming #boardGameNight #boardGameAddict #playMoreGames #bookstagram

It's #boardsandbooks time and what a great theme this month! It's dragons chosen by @claudia_y_andy šŸ² For my boardgame, I have chosen the brilliant Wyrmspan by @stonemaiergames. If you're a fan of Wingspan, you cannot go wrong with Wrymspan! Excavate caves and entice dragons into them to live safely, while also warning reputation with the Dragon Guild! For my book, I have chosen Fourth Wing. This is next on my tbr list so I can't say too much about it. I know it is high fantasy with plenty of dragons and it seems to tick all my boxes! And somehow, it was my only book with dragons in!! Have you played Wyrmspan? Have you read Fourth Wing yet? Let me know! Thanks as always to @getintogames and @gamingoverboard for this wonderful hashtag! #dragons #wyrms #boardgames #books #stonemaiergames #wyrmspan #wingspan #fourthwing #rebeccayarros

Uh-oh, the Necrodragon just found out that George R R Martin probably isn't gonna be finishing his Song of Ice and Fire series, and he's razed the Black Rose Lodge to the ground in a furious rage. Let's not mention the last two books kinda start unravelling anyway, huh? And DEFINITELY no one mention season 8 of the show šŸ«¢ Yes, it's #boardsandbooks time again and this month's topic is DRAGONS chosen by @claudia_y_andy šŸ‰ Black Rose Wars is a chaotic magical combat game stuffed full of cool minis, but the enormous Necrodragon might just be my favourite (after Lucifero). I haven't played with this particular expansion yet, but I'm much looking forward to doing so and painting this model sometime in the next decade! And what else has a zombie dragon? That's right kids, Game of Thrones! (But not in the books yet, if memory serves šŸ¤”) No further introduction needed at this point, but I really enjoyed working my way through the book series for the most part. Martin is no match for Tolkien as a writer, but his characters are infinitely more interesting and deep and flawed and are probably the main reason for the success of the show. That, and the kick ass dragons of course. # blackrosewars #fantasy #dragon #zombie #mini #gameofthrones #asoiaf #books #booksofinstagram #boardgame #boardgames #boardgamer #boardgamegeek #bgg #tabletopgames #boardgamesofinstagram #boardgamephotography #jeuxdesociete #giochidatavolo #brettspiel

šŸ² Dragons šŸ² For this monthā€™s theme in #boardsandbooks, ā€œDragonsā€ as chosen by@claudia_y_andy, I have gone RPG on you. And yes, D&D isnā€™t a board game in the classic sense, but it has dice, minis and a board to play it in - so close enough, I would say! Also, I didnā€™t have any dragon themed games, so Iā€™m of course hitting the game store immediately. Any suggestions?

Itā€™s mid May and this brings us another #BoardsandBooks , whatā€™s more, this month is featuring #dragons (chosen by @claudia_y_andy ) To be honest, I was a bit lost with this one. There ARE quite a few dragon paraphernalia lurking on our shelves. So instead to go for one of the obvious ones, I picked #emerald, a solid classic game we are still fond of after all these years. Whoā€™s not into collecting gemstones and treasures right from under the beasts belly? As for the book, I had to twist the rules. I was choosing An Illustrated Treasury of Scottish Folk and Fairy Tales by @theresabreslinauthor with stunning illustrations by @kate_leiper_artist, for the sheer beauty of cover and contrast. But I noticed there is one book in particular, which matches the dragon in #emerald perfectly: So for the whole dragon glory, swipe ā€”> left! Ainā€™t they looking like twins? And he is a reader!!! :) @laurafuchs_illustration and #florianfuchs did a great job bringing this wise story by author #michaelende back to life in this reprint. This magical # was created und hosted by @gamingoverboard @getintogames and @blendedfamilygamers

I think Iā€™m going to wee myselfā€¦. Because thereā€™s a scary dragon on the loose! The dragon from Queen Domino escaped and guysā€¦. It looks pretty mad at being in the box for so long! Thatā€™s rightā€¦ this is my ONLY board game I have not opened and played yet. It has never appeared out of my shelfā€¦ until today and I feel so guilty that I have not tried it once yet Along with my gorgeous dungeons and dragons world builder journal, this makes for a great #boardsandbooks theme created by @claudia_y_andy. This challenge was made by @getintogames @gamingoverboard and @blendedfamilygamers As with all dragons, when thereā€™s fireā€¦ gamers are surely going to get burned! #wednesdays #boardgaming #queendominoboardgame #booksbooksbooks #booksandboardgames #boardgameaddict #dragons #fantasygames

"Death is life's one great certainty." -Margaret Weis, Dragons of Autumn Twilight Another great certainty? That the Dragonlance book series, written by Margaret Weis and Tracey Hickman, saw me through my teenage years and all the ages that followed. They offer immersive epic fantasy stories, many of which feature or are titled after dragons. They span generations of fun, quirky characters, including my absolute favorite, Raistlin Majere, the mage with the hourglass eyes. A board game that also features dragons is Res Arcana, which is where these dragon cards come from. As with the books, the game has a magic, otherworldly theme, as you collect essences, craft artifacts, and use them to call forth dragons and conquer powerful locations. And the game's beautiful artwork just begs for stories to be written about it. So that's my pairing for the theme of DRAGONS chosen by @claudia_y_andy for this month's #boardsandbooks challenge, started by @gamingoverboard, @getintogames, and @blendedfamilygamers. Anyone is welcome to join in! Have you read this series or played this game? If so, I'd love to hear your thoughts on them!

Its another #BoardsandBooks and of course I have to join in this month. How can I not feature Dragons (chosen by @claudia_y_andy) I've already featured Wyrmspan so of course, it's the also super famous dragon game of Flamecraft! (From @cbalchemy) with one of my favourite book series: How to Train Your Dragon. I own all the books in the series and prefer them to the movies. The stories are quite different, and Toothless is VERY different in the books. Flamecraft fits with the cutesy theme of the Dragons as well. Ding-a-ling! Itā€™s the 15th, meaning itā€™s time for our monthly #boardsandbooks challenge, in which we pair the two best things in the world: books and board games! This month, ā€œhic sunt draconesā€: our theme is ā€˜Dragonsā€™! Indomitable giants of scale and sinew; sleek, horned serpents; cat-sized familiars; greedy hoarders of treasure; feral fire-breathers or wise, mystical beingsā€¦ in every shape and size, dragons have been with us since time immemorial, now more than ever. Whether they be destructive monsters able to engulf entire cities in scorching flame, the embodiment of evil or hardship, or benevolent guardians of a knowledge that eclipses that of mankind, dragons have occupied a central position in many a story, and continue to do so in such a variety of ways that only attest to the collective fascination they engender. This fascination hits Lady Trent like a lightning bolt in her (fictional) memoir, A Natural History Of Dragons. Lady Trent traces her story as a budding naturalist, and later, eminent figure in the study of dragonkind to the moment when her father obtains a copy of the eponymous book, which she secretly reads. This leads to a passion that far outweighs her prior interest in all other aspects of the natural world. Unfortunately, at the beginning of the novel (which I am still at), Lady Trent has other dragons to contend with than the scaly creatures she marvels at: the social restrictions she faces as a woman of the 19th century, whose bookish nature is frowned upon as it makes her appear wayward and unfit for marriage. I am really enjoying the book so far. Dragons have also seemingly influenced naturalists in the real world, as there are many dragons amongst us! Encyclopedia, a game about doing research to create the first encyclopaedia of natural history, pays tribute to a few of these dragons, including: 1. The frilled dragon 2. The Chinese water dragon 3. The thorny devil (sometimes also called ā€˜thorny dragonā€™) 4. The central bearded dragon 5. The fire salamander Thank you to @claudia_y_andy for choosing this theme!

It's 15th and it means it's #boardsandbooks. However I have absolutely nothing to say about this month theme - dragons šŸ‰ I have to confess actually that I don't like them at all šŸ™ˆ (are you unfollowing me right now?) Consider me boring but it's true, I would always prefer dinos to dragons and science to fantasy. That's the reason I couldn't remember a single book to fit the them. Sooo...yeah, I'm a looser this month, sorry guys šŸ’” but I'm super excited to read your post! Needless to say that I was born on the year of the dragon, right? If you haven't unfollowed me yet then you might be curious to know that the game on the photo is Village Big Box edition, a pretty old game with a couple really interesting twists that make it one of a kind.Ā I like this game. Needless to say that that twists are the cubesĀ  indicating available actions, burying meeples (yep), a beautiful but unreadable board and absolutely enormously (just insanely, I mean it) huge box with one of the most stupid inlays in the universe? Personally I prefer a full box concept rather than big box, but there's an opinion that big boxes make people pay more money easier.Ā  Board games are freaking expensive but aren't we all addicted and would buy another box no matter what size (and price) it is? I would (just whining). So here I am asking you if that's true? Does it work on you this way? Would you prefer a small or regular size box full of stuff or a bigger but emptier one? Does "big box" has to be big literary or it's a metaphor for all possible content included?

The dragon is withered, His bones are now crumbled; His armour is shivered, His splendour is humbled! Though sword shall be rusted, And throne and crown perish With strength that men trusted And wealth that they cherish, Here grass is still growing, And leaves are yet swinging, The white water flowing, And elves are yet singing Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Come! Tra-la-la-lally! Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Come back to the valley! Today, I am taking part in my first #boardsandbooks which is run by @gamingoverboard on the 15th of every month. This months theme is DRAGON as chosen by @claudia_y_andy I have chosen the wonderful Wyrmspan by @stonemaiergames @jameystegmaier , which, unfortunately, this is still my friend's copy, but we do hope to add to our collection soon. Featuring our very battered copy of The Hobbit!

5/15/2024, 8:29:26 AM

Itā€™s the 15th and that means itā€™s time for #boardsandbooks a monthly challenge started by @gamingoverboard @getintogames and @blendedfamilygamers where we pair a board game and book around a theme. This months theme is dragon and chosen by @claudia_y_andy Of all the themes, this was the one I think weā€™ve had the most board games and books to choose from! Turns out I have a lot of books about dragons and we have some great dragon themed board games, so weā€™ve gone for a theme within a theme and done dragons with a thief to help narrow down our choices. šŸ“– The book is the Dragons of Deepwood Fen and this is the @thebrokennbinding edition which has really cool dragon sprayed edges! This book is set in a world where dragons are owned and ridden by use of a crop and fetter which keeps them obedient. However some dragons are bonded to which is illegal. One of our main characters is hiding a secret bond to an umbral dragon. He is a talented thief and we meet him as heā€™s being asked to steal the wisp of a dead woman from a stately home. He starts to uncover nefarious plans which brings him into the path of Lorelei, an inquisitor who is looking to investigate the same thing. šŸŽ² the game is Clank. A game that has sat in our favourite games list for years. We love a deck builder and this is a really fun one with the added tension of the race to get out the dungeon before youā€™re trapped down there. You are venturing into a dungeon to steal treasures from a dragon. When you create noise it goes into a bag and is drawn to see who takes damage. The more noise youā€™re making, the more of your cubes go in the bag and the more likely you are to be attacked by the dragon. Happy boards and books everyone! #boardgames #games #boardgamegeek #bookstagram #books #ilovebooks #iloveboardgames #meanderingmeeple #boardgamecommunity #thedragonsofdeepwoodfen #clank #bookcommunity #bookish #booklover #boardgamephotography #boardgamechallenge

Itā€™s time for another #boardsandbooks and this time the theme is Dragons as chosen by @claudia_y_andy The book I have chosen is The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon. This is full on female led epic fantasy, sort of a retelling of Saint George and the Dragon, with a lot of depth. When I say epic, i mean both in the page count (i think 800-900 pages) and the feel of the world. The world is so rich and even within the dragon lore in this world there is so much on offer. You follow 4 characters and I was engrossed in each characters storylines and how they slowly intertwined! The game I have chosen is Runes and Regulations. Dragons in a suburban setting, getting angry over lawn disputes. Unicorns being the chill suburban neighbours. Of course! The gameplay itself doesn't lend to epic gaming, it's a calmer filler, that cute artwork really ties the theme all together as a nice little game šŸ„° i think maybe the smaller game compliments the epicness of the book šŸ¤£ #prioryoftheorangetree #samamthashannon #fantasy #runesandregulations #boardgame #boardgames #boardsandbooks

'This is where the dragons went. They lie... not dead, not asleep, but... dormant. And although the space they occupy isn't like normal space, nevertheless they are packed in tightly. They could put you in mind of a can of sardines, if you thought sardines were huge and scaly. And presumably, somewhere, there's a key...' They say you'll never forget your first, and you know what? It's absolutely true. Guards! Guards! was the first Discworld Novel I ever read (at a very young age), and it left me a bit unsettled. It's also the only one I still keep as a German paperback, now supplemented by this beautiful clothbound version by @randomhouse. IMO it's a good gateway book for the Discworld per se; it stars a lot of the characters you will meet over and again and it has a great story arc. And of course dragons (in more than one variety), which makes it an obvious choice for this month's #boardsandbooks (second edition), still run by @boardgamingoverboard and with the theme chosen by @claudia_y_andy. As things go I went with another obvious choice for the boardgame, Wyrmspan by @jameystegmaier. I might be one of the few people who was actually hoping for just a simple re-skin of Wingspan, and with things going as they do I haven't played this one yet. I've looked at all the components and punched and sorted everything, even thought about getting some upgrades, admired the dragon eggs, tried to figure out how to take some outdoor-pictures with the cards... and put it on the shelf. Now, answer a question, if you would be so kind: what is it about dragons that fascinates us so much?! They're little more than oversized winged turtles with a chronic pharingytis, but somehow we can't get enough of them - some of us even decorate our homes with dragon plushies! WHY?!

I know I'm early, but since the given date is "around the 15th" and this month I may have more than one pairing to show I'll start my #boardsandbooks party with ZOGG and Dragon's Breath. It doesn't take a mastermind to deduce this month's theme, which is DRAGONS as suggested by @claudia_y_andy! ZOGG by Axel Scheffler and Julia Donaldson is one of my favorite Childrens books by this well known duo - outranked only by the Gruffelo. It's about dragon youngsters who attain dragon school to learn the appropriate skills every dragon should be able to master. It's a heartwarming story with beautiful illustrations and a lovely ending. Dragon's Breath is another all-time favorite in our house by @haba_deutschland. It's a dexterity game in which you play as one of the dragon youngsters aiming to snatch the colourful crystals from the dragon father; every round he will melt one of the ice rings holding the crystals with his fiery breath so they will topple down and the youngsters can collect them. It can be played with up to four players and there's a very cute expansion, The Dragon Egg, which twists the base game a lot and gives a completely new experience to the game. Cute dragons for my first entry - this time more among the children's perspective. Stay tuned to see what comes next! Iā€™m playing some catchup for this months #boardsandbooks created by @gamingoverboard. This months theme was ā€œMusicā€ and was chosen by @brotherwisegames. For this musical pairing Iā€™ve chosen ā€œThe Hobbitā€ by JRR Tolkien and Tokaido! Iā€™ve always been so fascinated by the depth at which Tolkien does his world building. He even went so far as to create his own fantasy languages, songs, and stories! The Hobbit itself is a merry tale filled with spirit and adventure. Even a joyous song or two!! Tokaido is a journey of another tale. Traveling along one of the most magnificent East Sea Roads in Japan. In this game youā€™re not trying to travel the fastest. But instead you aim to have the most memorable trip. Eating good food, meeting a variety of interesting people, enjoying the sights, buying some trinkets and more! I feel this sense of journey and peace connects well with the Hobbit. The soundtrack of this particular journey while different holds the same important meaning~ #tokaidotheboardgame #thehobbitbook

I remembered today was the 15th and so I get to do #boardsandbooks again. Todayā€™s theme is ā€œMusicā€ as chosen by @smallfriesgames So my husband has tons of books on music but has no idea where most of them are so he pulled the book that came with his Beatles Vinyl set. It is not a book I nor my husband has read cover to cover but it is a nice book to look through and read certain pages as you listen to the albums. For the game I chose On Tour, the cool little roll and flip and write about being a touring band and making the best path through the USA (or Europe). Thank you to @gamingoverboard for running this cool hashtag. #boardgames #boardgamesofinstagram #thebeatles #ontourgame #books #booksofinstagram #bookstagram

Music šŸŽ¶ . . Itā€™s still April 15th in Oklahoma so Iā€™m sneaking in a late-night #boardsandbooks post! This month, our theme is ā€œmusic,ā€ as chosen by @smallfriesgames! . . I have chosen to pair Obsession by @kayentagames with the classic Jane Austen novel šŸ“– Pride and Prejudice. The Victorian England time period reminds me of music and drawing rooms and fancy ballroom dances šŸ’ƒšŸ¼ and walks around the promenade! . . Spring is settling in, and the mornings are filled with the sound of birdsong, accompanied by the RHYTHM of my fingers playing STACCATO on my KEYBOARD. Thatā€™s right ā€” itā€™s #boardsandbooks again, and the theme this month is Music chosen by @smallfriesgames ! Music has been a KEY part of my life for as long as I can remember, and I consider my devotion to metal as a genre an indissociable part of my identity. If a NOTEworthy metal-themed board game were ever to be released, like a tabletop equivalent of the 2009 video game BrĆ¼tal Legend, Iā€™d be all over it in a jiffy, no holdsā€¦ BARD. TREBLE puns aside, I introduce the shredders and crooners of the Five Realms, the up-and-coming bards of Bardwood Grove. While the instruments they carry bear no trace of whammy bars or leads, their goal is the same as any rising talent in the musical world, from rocking out in packed venues to composing songs that will go down in history. And if you can tame the local wildlife with your ballads, thatā€™s as good a bonus as any! Iā€™m so glad they included that devil with the fiddle, who seriously looks like he might tear through a number of Slayer classics. Now to get the fansā€™ necks working! Nocturnes by Kazuo Ishiguro is the first book that came to mind when I began thinking of a suitable candidate for this month. I read it at least five years ago, and though none of its stories really stuck with me the way others have, I love Ishiguroā€™s prose, and remember enjoying his exploration of the central role music can have in a personā€™s life. And though metal is ā€” and I assume, forever will be ā€” absent from his writing, it is precisely the quiet, melancholic, reflective atmosphere he creates that I seek when I pick up one of his books. Added to my photo are a few metal album covers I pulled off my dwindling CD library, remnants of a time when collecting CDs was a passion, and there were at least 500 lining my shelves. Thanks to @gamingoverboard and @getintogames for running this monthly challenge!

šŸŽ¶Whatā€™s your favourite music genre? I'm a Ska girl through and through! šŸ–¤šŸ¤šŸ–¤šŸ¤šŸ–¤šŸ¤ * * This month's #boardsandbooks theme is music (chosen by me!). Iā€™ve gone with Knock Knock! Yo Gabba Gabba! for my game choice. It features plenty of musical cards like Plex's keytar, Munoā€™s guitar, Brobeeā€™s drum and of course the iconic @yogabbagabba boombox! You'll also find 2 super awesome bands on the cards - @theaquabats (one of my all time favourite bands ever!) and The Yo Dazzlers. I've teamed Knock Knock! Yo Gabba Gabba! with one of the books from my Yo Gabba Gabba! collection. This is a fun boombox shaped book that comes with little card figures of all the characters and a pull out play scene of GabbaLand! * * If you fancy adding Knock Knock! Yo Gabba Gabba! to your games/Yo Gabba Gabba! collection you can find it on yogabbagabba.com, EtsyUK and other independent shops in the UK, USA and Cyprus. "Then I played the song that hides in the center of me. That wordless music that moves through the secret places in my heart. I played it carefully, strumming it slow and low into the dark stilness of the night. I would like to say it is a happy song, that it is sweet and bright, but it is not." From The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss. If you have read The Name of the Wind you know that a lot of its magic comes from the way the words are used throughout the book. Music and how it moves people is a frequent subject of this yet unfinished fantasy trilogy as the main character Kvothe is a musician first and foremost. Music is also the theme suggested by @smallfriesgames for this month's #boardsandbooks in which we pair a book with a game around the common theme on the 15th of each month thanks to @gamingoverboard If you like both of these things, why not join us? With the Name of the Wind expansion for Call to Adventure by @brotherwisegames you get to live out all your bardic dreams such as earning your own pipes in the Eolian so this made it an obvious choice for me this time around. #boardgames #boardgamesofinstagram #brettspiel #drustveneigre #calltoadventure #expansion #nameofthewind #fantasy #bookstagram #cards #cardsofinstagram

We're half way through the month, and the 15th means it is time for a new #boardsandbooks theme. This month @smallfriesgames picked #Music as the theme. We don't have that many games or books that crossover with this. But this book that the baby is constantly jumping on reminded me we have a kids dinosaur themed game. SOS Dino is cooperative game where you have to save dinosaurs and their eggs from volcanoes. You blind draw tiles from a bag to create the lava flow and govern which Dino can move that turn. So I present musical dinosaurs šŸ¦•šŸ¦– šŸŽ¶ #boardgames #cooperativegame #familygames @gamingoverboard

Somehow we are now half way through the month, and the 15th means it is time for a new #boardsandbooks theme. The ever lovely @smallfriesgames has decreed the theme to be: šŸŽ¶MUSICšŸŽ¶ Now I don't have many boards or books with this theme! However my Dad collects some beautiful books and I remembered he had this beauty. A prequel to one of my favourite trilogies. "The Ballard of Songbirds and Snakes" by Suzanne Collins. Lucy Grey sings for her life in the Hunger Games prequel. Charming her way into the hearts of the people of Panem, particularly the "rich" capital elite. In Histrio you perform for the moody King. Now he could be in a happy ha ha ha mood or a grumpy tragic "off with their heads" kind of mood. It's up to the performers. šŸŽ #bookstagram #hungergames #songbirdsandsnakes #lucygrey #histrio #boardgamesofinstagram

šŸŽ¶ Play a tune and bust a move it's time for this month's #boardsandbooks and the theme for this month is MUSIC, chosen by the brilliant @smallfriesgames šŸŽ¶ šŸŽ² For my game I have chosen Vagrantsong from @playwyrd. A story-driven, co-operative game where players take on the roles of Vagrants travelling aboad a haunted train. Arm yourself with junk to defeat the Haints and the bosses to uncover the secrets of the train. šŸ“– For my book I have chosen Baby Be Mine from one of my all time favourite authors, @paigetoonauthor. Meg used to be a personal assistant to a famous rockstar, Johnny Jefferson (also read Johnny Be Good), who has now settled down with her boyfriend and her son, living the life in France. But Meg is holding onto a secret about her son...is there a natural talent for music in his genes or not? Time again for #boardsandbooks challenge created by @gamingoverboard, @blendedfamilygamers, and @getintogames. This perfectly mixes my two biggest hobbies. This months theme is Music chosen by @smallfriesgames The book I chose is Ghost Road Blues by Jonathan Mayberry. This is one of my all-time favorite horror books. ā€œThirty years ago, a blues musician called the Bone Man killed the devil at the crossroads, only to be beaten and hung like a scarecrow in a cornfieldā€”or so the story goes.ā€ This book does an amazing job a creating the feeling of coming evil. Merchants of the dark road is a rondel game where you travel the dangerous paths between cities delivering goodā€¦one of which happens to be musical instruments. I am not very hip to musical artists beyond my own favorites, so I first found Leonard Cohen, known for songs like Hallelujah and Bird on the Wire, through his poetry rather than his music. Yet his poems also often have a lilting cadence not dissimilar to song, and I could easily imagine them set to music. I absolutely love his poetry: its rhythm, its themes, its utter irreverance. So I've shared a few favorite poems here if you swipe, including one about the song of a nightingale... ...which brings me to Wingspan Asia, the game I've paired this book with for the monthly #boardsandbooks challenge (maintained by @gamingoverboard), with a theme of MUSIC suggested by @smallfriesgames. Though I went with Wingspan Asia, any of the Wingspan games would do! Why? Because one of the things I have really come to appreciate these past few years spent living outside the city is the beauty and intricacy of birdsong. One of the most relaxing things I can imagine is sitting outside, reading poetry and listening to the music of the birds. And the twittering, chirping, hooting, warbling, screeching, or belting of birds can fill you with a range of emotions, just like a song or a poem: confusion, annoyance, retrospection, curiosity, wonder, joy, hope. Just like other forms of music, both poetry and birdsong have the power to change our moods and our minds if we open ourselves to the experience. Do you have any favorite poems or poets? I'd love to discover more and get back to reading poetry as regularly as I used to!

Itā€™s the 15th and that means itā€™s time for #boardsandbooks a monthly challenge created by @gamingoverboard @getintogames and @blendedfamilygamers . This monthā€™s theme is Music šŸŽ¶ chosen by @smallfriesgames šŸ“– The book Iā€™ve chosen is Schraderā€™s Chord. This book was recommended by the wonderful @dems_book_den and is perfect for the music theme! We follow Charlie who returns to Seattle for his fatherā€™s funeral and learns his father has left him a set of four cursed records that when played together, open a gate to the land of the dead. This is a fantastic horror novel all about music, most of it is set in a record shop and Charlie himself works in the music industry. I couldnā€™t put this book down, it was completely thrilling and creepy and felt like such a unique horror experience. šŸŽ² We decided to continue down the horror route with our game pick ā€˜Vagrantsongā€™ a co-operative game set on a ghost filled train where youā€™re trying to restore humanity to the haints that will attack you, they all have their own backstory and style and itā€™s fascinating! One of the characters you can play as is The Songsmith who has skills such as Upbeat Tempo and An Old Melody. Love the theming, the storytelling in this game and it looks so good on the table! Itā€™s the 15th of April, which means itā€™s time for #boardsandbooks ran by @gamingoverboard This monthā€™s theme is MUSIC šŸŽ¶ Picked by @smallfriesgames Iā€™ve picked #castlepartygame because you canā€™t have a party without music And a strange picking for the book, but when I first read this 20 odd years ago, I swear there was a playlist in the back of #undeadandunwed that the author had been listening to whilst writing it. This then got me in White Zombie and Rob Zombie But my editions do not seem to have the playlists??

Itā€™s April the 15th, ladies and gentlemen: Show time! Mid month we honor #boardsandbooks, a hashtag created & hosted by @blendedfamilygamers, @gamingoverboard and @getintogames. This months theme was MUSIC, choosen by @smallfriesgames So on stage tonight, please welcome #daisyjonesandthesix, an amazing performance by @tjenkinsreid, a great show with incredible characters that might have happened exactly that way in music business. What better way to put this in the spotlight than #showmanager, a solid classic where 2-6 players compete into assembling the best singers & actors to draw the audience in with the ā€žbest musical in townā€œ. It's the 15th, which means it's time for #boardsandbooks again. This months theme is MUSIC as chosen by @smallfriesgames The game I've chosen this month is Hanamikoji which sees you vying for the attention of various geisha. Geisha are known for their skills in art, dance and (most importantly for todays theme) music. I'm showcasing one geisha in particular from the game, I love the alternate art card where she is playing a guitar šŸŽø šŸ˜ The book I've chosen is The House in the Cerulean Sea, I've chosen this book for one character, Lucy. Throughout the book you hear of Lucy's love for music and songs are sprinkled throughout the story like a hidden playlist which I love. Music isn't the main feature of this book, but for one character it's what brings them joy and comfort. If you haven't read this book, it's cosy and caring and i can't recommend it enough! #boardgames #boardgame #hanamikoji #geisha #thehouseintheceruleansea #tjklune #cosysff #chosenfamily

Favorite time of the month: 15th and #boardsandbooks, today on MUSIC as suggested by @smallfriesgames Once again I couldn't restrict myself to just one book, but - one is a German book, and one an English book, so I think that's just fine. As for the boardgame, that was easy - it's the only one I have (and forgot about in the first instance) focused on music. The Gig by @braincrackgames must have been one of the first Kickstarters I ever backed, and I do not regret it! Due to some unforeseeable issues fulfillment took some time, but now it's here, and it's beautiful, and it's mine. As jazz musicians you choose an instrument and play a tune - via dice, that is, beautiful coloured wooden dice with different notes on them. The playerboards are focused on single instruments, the artwork is amazing, and everything about the game gives off this jazzy feeling. Adorable. The books... move in a different direction. Little People Big Dreams David Bowie (in the storybook version) is a very minimalized biography which mentions in very short sentences the important milestones in Bowie's life. An artist with many faces and unique talents. āš” So viel Zeit by Frank Goosen tells the story of five middle aged men who finally want to make their dream come true and become rockstars. They've been friends since school, and always shared this vision, but then life came along, and everything changed. It's been 25 years since their graduation, and with the reunion coming nearer they feel the urge to get themselves together and finally live their dream, show everyone else that they made it. Here they go again... šŸŽø Credits to @gamingoverboard who keeps the hashtag running - next time in Essen you might want to make the Trip over to Bochum, since this is the place where the second book is set šŸ˜ #littlepeoplebigdreams #sovielzeit #music #thegig #rocknroll #jazz #bowie

Our April focus games areā€¦ Kingdomino from @blueorangegames Wingspan from @stonemaiergames Honey Buzz from @elfcreekgames Maple Valley from @kidstablebg Every month, each family member selects a board game from our collection. The games are placed on our shelf of opportunity. We view these as focus games. They are not the only games we play throughout the month; the shelf of opportunity ensures we give many games some love throughout the year.

4/1/2024, 2:39:56 PM

Soooo it's definitely the wrong day, but at least it's the right month! #boardsandbooks is an awesome hashtag challenge that pairs two of my favourite things together - boardgames and books! The theme for March was SECRETS. As soon as I heard this theme, I immediately thought "keep it secret, keep it safe" and knew I wanted to do a Lord of the Rings pairing. So, here's 'War of the Ring' by @ares.games (my favourite LOTR's themed game) and it is paired with this absolutely boster of a charity shop find - 'The Complete Guide to Middle Earth'. This will come in handy prepping for our 'One Ring' campaign, it is full of every little detail you could possibly want to know about Tolkiens world. I have a big stack of Tolkien to get through, I'm particularly looking forward to 'The Children of Hurin'. Apologies for the Airecon-associated absence, but now that I'm back home and missing all my gaming buddies, I at least have time to belatedly participate in this month's #boardsandbooks, the theme of which is "Secret" as chosen by the enigmatic @mostly.solo šŸ•µšŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø As you can probably tell, I've gone down the espionage route for this one. The Ashenden anthology by the brilliantly named William Somerset Maugham is a collection of short spy stories about an undercover journalist/writer posted throughout Europe during the First World War, and is loosely based on Maugham's own experiences. I adore this book because it takes place back in the days before the implausible car chases, bomb plots and gun fights, when being a spy involved wit and clever subterfuge during the Belle Ɖpoque, and all the romance and eccentricity which that evokes. The game I've paired this with is Mind Mgmt, a 1 vs many hidden movement game that is still shamefully on my shelf of shame (I had to take the shrink off just to take this photo šŸ˜³). But even the artwork alone recalls the setting of Ashenden and the quirky, colourful characters he encounters. . . . . . #bookstagram #booksofig #booksofinstagram #ashenden #spy #espionage #mindmgmt #comic #graphicnovel #hiddenmovement #boardgame #boardgames #boardgamer #boardgamegeek #bgg #tabletopgames #boardgamesofinstagram #boardgamephotography #jeuxdesociete #giochidatavolo #brettspiel

My fellow solo gamer @mostly.solo selected SECRET as this period prompt for #boardsandbooks in the trend created by @getintogames @gamingoverboard and @blendedfamilygamers In the Mistborn series, one of the protagonist is Kelsier and his motto is ā€œThere's always another secretā€ and one spin-oof of the trilogy is ā€œMistborn Secret History: a Cosmere Novellaā€ so it was my book to feature. I had it in electronic format so I used some (very) basic imagea manipulation to add it to the picture. The boardgame is Mystborn house war and the game is a semi-cooperative respurce-managment game ser during the events or the first Mistborn novel and it has some secret agenda component. Sadly, I haven't played it because it's hard to meet with the right (or wrong) type of gamers for this one. #boardgames #boardgamegeek #boardgamer #playmoregames #juegosdemesa #jeuxdesociete #tabletopgame #boardgaming #sologaming #sologamer #playmoregames

šŸ¤«Boards and books - Secrets šŸ¤« Iā€™m a little late (again) for this monthā€™s #boardsandbooks, as I was rummaging through my head, trying to find something with hidden roles or social deduction in my collection. But the it dawned on me: What kind of secrets would be useful in the maddening year that is 2024? Survival, of course! So hereā€™s my take on this monthā€™s theme - secrets - as chosen by @mostly.solo. The game is 3 Things by Shenanigames and Max Brooksā€™ wonderful The Zombie Survival Guide. Both contain very useful tips on how to deal with the inevitable apocalypse šŸ˜„ #boardsandbooks #boardgamesofinstagram #survival #secrets #boardgames

#boardsandbooks (was yesterday) and the theme was secrets. I've paired Antidote with John Wyndham's Trouble with Lichen In Trouble with Lichen two biochemists discover a species of rare lichen can slow the aging process, one chemist doses his family, the other opens a spa and offers treatments to women. Both know this can't be told to the wider world without major upheaval in society. And Antidote is a card game where one vial of an unknown poison has broken in the lab! You have the entire deck of cards split amongst you (excluding the one card that is the broken poison) you trade cards, or force people to discard cards to try and work out which of the antidotes you should be holding on to to 'drink' at the end of the game. #johnwyndham #troublewithlichen #antidote

A day late, but im joining in with #BoardsandBooks (created by @gamingoverboard and @getintogames) and this months theme is Secrets as chosen by @mostly.solo It's no secret that I love dragons (see what I did there.. šŸ˜) So it won't be a suprise when I say the book Eragon by @christopher_paolini was one of my absolute favourites growing up. This book series has many secrets, twists, and turns perfect for this months theme. I have, of course, paired it with Wyrmspan (@stonemaiergames) as this also features many dragon type creatures. (Flamecraft seemed a little too "cutesy" to fit with the story. The 15th of the month is #boardsandbooks (I completely forgot to post this yesterday!) A monthly challenge started by @gamingoverboard @blendedfamilygamers with @getintogames This months theme is SECRETS picked by @mostly.solo Iā€™ve chosen the secrets of a haunted house and the secrets of a ghost! Mysterium Park is a co-op game for up to 6 players. One players acts as the ghost and speaks to the other players, the psychics, through vision cards which are used as clues to try and find out who killed the ghost and where! I love playing this game with family as itā€™s good fun guessing game! The vision cards are quite abstract so itā€™s good fun trying to guess what the ghost is trying to tell you whilst they have to sit in silence and watch you pick, often the wrong, cards! Time again for #boardsandbooks challenge created by @gamingoverboard, @blendedfamilygamers, and @getintogames. This perfectly mixes my two biggest hobbies. This months theme is Secrets as chosen by @mostly.solo Something that has always intrigued me has been the secrets that could have been hidden my ancient civilizations. Indiana Jones has always been on of my favorite characters and even thought about Archeology as a major in college. This is why Lost Ruins of Arnak is one of my favorite games. I love discovery mysteries and finding what secrets they might hold. A book that I recently read that fits right into this is Captain Moxley and the Empires of the Empire by Dan Hanks. Hanks thanks his parents for ā€œtaking me to see whip-cracking adventurers punching bad guys, melting faces, and jumping out of airplanes in life rafts when I was at a young impressionable age.ā€ This book and games really tapped into my love for these adventures and mysteries. #boardgames #tabletop #tabletopgaming #tabletopgames #boardgamegeek #boardgamesofinstagram #boardgamesphotography #boardgamephotography #boardgamer #boardgameaddict #tabletopgamer #bgg #newgames #cards #cardgames #dice #thedicetower #gameaddict #bggcommunity #iloveboardgames #gamenight #bookstagram #booklover #bookaddict #lostruinsofarnak #indianajones

How far would you go to save the ones you love? For my entry, I decided to have both Arkham Horror and We need to do Something by Max Booth III. Both hold deep, dark secrets, some that we wish never to show to others, for fear of being misunderstood, shunned, or even killed. I just finished this book and it was... weird. Crazy. Insane. Captivating. I finished it in two days. Wow. It's #boardsandbooks time, and this prompt of SECRETS was chosen by @mostly.solo and the hashtag #boardsandbooks was created by getintogames @gamingoverboard and @blendedfamilygamers #arkhamhorror #weneedtodosomething #boardgames #books #boardgamegeeks #bookworms

#boardsandbooks as always on the 15th - this time on SECRETS as suggested by @mostly.solo. Well. For once I really struggled with my book choice, for most of the books in my shelf contain a secret - that's what keeps the tension going, isn't it?! But here it is. I settled on Lost Cities in the 2player edition by @kosmos_games with it's beautiful cards that reveal a secret landscape when put in line. It's one of the oldest boardgames on our small collection, and I very much enjoy playing it (mostly because of the beautiful illustrations). And after a lot of thinking and re-thinking and overthinking my book choice finally fell on The Host by Stephanie Meyer, who is a lot more famous as the author of the Twilight Saga. Earth has been taken over by an alien species which invades human minds (and eradictes the persons) while leaving the bodys intact. Their goal is to save the planet and the species mankind by inhabitating every single human being. But there is resistance; humans hide from the invaders and even fight back. When a body dies, it cannot be taken over, so for some giving up their lives is the only way to save themselves. But sometimes, the fall isn't deep enough; sometimes the body gets saved, against the human's will. And sometimes humans are stronger than expected, and fight back even if they should have been eradicated by the invasive species. Wanderer and Melanie share a body, which is a secret that cannot be known to anyone. But they also share a lot more than that: Memories. Emotions. Longing. This is a great book, but more on the romance side of literature. There is tension, and tragedy, and feelings, but it's a really good story. Itā€™s the 15th of the month and that means it is time for #boardsandbooks this monthā€™s theme is SECRETS picked by @mostly.solo For my book, I have chosen Agatha Christieā€™s ā€žAND THEN THERE WERE NONEā€œ A Story written by the queen of crime about different people on an island which all have dark secrets. In the end they all have to pay for their sins. The game I picked is called the cursed birthday (in German: Der verfluchte Geburtstag) At This Game Lady Hampton is planning a party, but a ghost disrupts the preparations and drives away the guests. What is hidden in the rooms of Hampton Mansion? The players must work together to find the key to the drawer where the ghost is hiding. Once players have mastered all the challenges, one final test awaits them...

šŸ¤« SECRETS is this month's theme of #boardsandbooks a challenge of pairing up a game with a book around a common theme. It's managed by @gamingoverboard and this month's theme comes from @mostly.solo šŸ“š On one hand we have a stack of 4 Secret Projects by Brandon Sanderson (seen here in lovely editions by @miplns) If you aren't familiar with Brandon Sanderson, he mostly writes epic fantasy and he is also known for writing a lot of it and in a timely fashion to boot. He regularly updates fans on the progress of his ongoing projects so it came as an even bigger shock when in 2022 he announced that, in addition to working on his other series, he also managed to write not one, or two, but *four* new books that he kept secret. While self-contained, Sanderson's different book series take place in the same shared universe (called Cosmere) and as you read you can make connections between them. They are full of mysteries and it's always satisfying when a new secret is revealed. šŸŽ² Gloomhaven: one of its major draws is revealing all of the secret content. As you progress in the game, you unlock new character classes and nothing quite compares to the rush of pulling a new mini out of its box to see what kind of character you'll get to explore next! There are other envelopes too, which you are instructed to open at certain points, secret notes, and tidbits of lore to discover. šŸ“ On a personal note, this post celebrates both the announcement of the Secret Project number 5 and the fact that I've been taking part in #boardsandbooks for a year now! šŸ„³ #boardgamesofinstagram #gloomhaven #cosmere #brandonsanderson #boardgames #brettspiele #boardgamecommunity #druÅ”tveneigre #epskafantastika #bookstagram

Itā€™s #boardsandbooks time! This month, weā€™re looking at Secrets, chosen by @mostlysolo! Night is falling upon the village of Peyrebeille. Clouds sail overhead, heavy with rain, carrying the promise of a foul night. Ahead lies the inn, its windows like twin beacons of light for the weary traveller. You push open the door, a smile of anticipation spreading over your face as you picture a warm meal, a tankard of ale, and a feather bed. But you do not notice the devious gleam in the innkeeperā€™s eye as he hands you your key. You do not notice the nod that passes between the two men in the corner, as they watch you climbing the heavy wooden stairs. Such is your contentment and weariness that you do not even notice that the floorboards are a dull crimson in one corner of the room. With a sigh, you sit heavily on your bed, and remove your boots, not knowing that this may be the last night you spend ā€¦ alive. For the Bloody Inn hides a terrible secret. Its rapacious owners, a family of farmers steeped in vice, have devised a cunning scheme to get rich quick. In this game, you are the puppet-master, pulling the strings of this well-oiled machine, which involves bribing accomplices, robbing unwary guests of their money, burying their corpses should murder be on the cards, and reaping the benefits of your dastardly enterprise. So long as the police never stumbles upon a dead body, the crooked innkeepers can continue making a quiet fortune in complete secrecy. A dark secret also haunts the pages of Silvia Moreno-Garcia's ā€˜Mexican Gothicā€™, in which Catalina is urgently summoned to High Place, an isolated mansion in the mountains, to investigate her cousinā€™s claims that her husband plans to poison her. There, she encounters the members of the Doyle family, whose arrogance and obnoxious behaviour immediately set the ominous mood in the story. Unable to assist, let alone talk to, her cousin on account of her poor health, Catalina spends time delving into the Doyleā€™s past, and in so doing, she begins to uncover the secrets of the house and its denizens, including the reasons for its patriarchā€™s unnatural longevity, and the role she and her cousin are to play in his schemes.

I love #boardsandbooks because it combines my two favourite hobbies, gaming and reading!! If you added eating to the mix I'd be in heaven! This month the [email protected] has chosen the theme šŸ¤« SECRETS šŸ¤« I have chosen the book FOURTH WING by @rebeccayarros because it was a secret that this book was even waiting for me to pick up at the library! They forgot to email me and let me know. Also the blurb on the inside reads "...Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret." So I guess there will be secrets to uncover! Who knows! Not me because I haven't read it yet! I paired it with Flamecraft because you can have secret objective cards!! And of course....dragons. There's dragons. Secrets and Dragons that's what we're going with here folks! @cbalchemy @luckyduckgames #flamecraft #fourthwing

What's your deepest secret? We all have them, some known only to us, others shared with similarly tight-lipped (we hope) individuals. I think that's what makes mysteries so appealing: getting to unravel someone else's secrets, especially in a way that makes our minds work to piece together confirmed clues with seemingly errant details, all while avoiding red herrings meant to confound us. Both the game and book I've chosen for #boardsandbooks satisfy that primal urge to discover deep, dark truths... especially ones that come in the form of a murder (or two, or three, or four). I actually just finished reading "Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone" by Benjamin Stevenson (@stevensonexperience), in perfect timing for this post. It's a really unique mystery novel where every character has a secret, including the protagonist, and nearly every character has actually killed someone. It's written in a very meta way, with the narrator chatting with the reader as he writes a book about his experience at his family's reunion at a ski lodge, when everyone will be reunited with the brother he sent to prison. The protagonist is a bit of a murder mystery buff, so he has all these rules he tries to follow as he narrates his story to us, which gives the book so extra many layers. There are clever twists and turns, hints at what will be important later, and of course, those pesky red herrings. I really, really enjoyed this book (minus a bit of liberty taken in writing about an injury to the narrator's hand) and highly recommend it. The game, Awkward Guests by @megacorpin, similarly reveals only bits of information at a time, as you see clues on cards and mark them on your mansion sheet, trying to figure out who murdered Mr. Walton. But sometimes you're at the mercy of what others will share with you, and you can decide just how much you want to share with them --- and which information you'd rather keep secret. Like the book, the game has a quirky and fun cast of characters, and it keeps you guessing at every turn. Itā€™s the 15th of the month and that means itā€™s time for #boardsandbooks Todayā€™s the day where we bring together books and board games around a monthly theme. This months theme is Secrets as chosen by @mostly.solo Iā€™ve chosen Murder in the Family by Cara Hunter a book written like a tv show were you (the reader) are trying to figure out a familyā€™s secrets in order to solve the murder of Luke Ryder. Iā€™ve paired this with Alien Fate of the Nostromo, in this game there are concealed tokens that are kept secret from the player. Are they safe or do they hide the alien? #boardsandbooks created by @getintogames @gamingoverboard and @blendedfamilygamers Tags

Itā€™s the 15th which means itā€™s time for #boardsandbooks a monthly challenge created by @gamingoverboard @blendedfamilygamers and @getintogames where we combine a game and a book around a theme. This monthā€™s theme is secret which was chosen by @mostly.solo I had so many ideas for this theme! We whittled down until we had either a space related secret pairing or nautical and we went with space. šŸŽ² The game we chose is Nemesis. Thereā€™s secret information in this game. You each have objectives and some of those objectives will have you acting in ways that will harm your fellow players, though thatā€™s kept secret as much as you can. This is co-operative and you have a shared alien enemy. However your personal goals will lead you to change things on the ship such as the engines and destination secretly which could sabotage your fellow players! šŸ“– The book is Sleeping Giants. This book is about the discovery of a giant hand with strange writing and the secret mission to find the other pieces of a giant body and put them back together. This book mostly takes place in interview format with a mysterious character whose name we never learn. Both of these are great, mysterious and have lots of hidden information and secrecy. Both are sci-fi themed and space linked and I thought they looked cool together! Happy #boardsandbooks everyone! #bookstagram #books #boardgames #boardgamephotography #iloveboardgames #nemesis #sleepinggiants #boardgamecommunity #boardgamesofinstagram #boardgamelover #games #bookish #meanderingmeeple #booklover #bookcommunity
