I was really looking forward to reading this because I read a book by @alihazelwood before, and I really liked that. And I like chess. So I was very curious about this book. It was a nice story, funny at times and I enjoyed reading it very much. However, sometimes i also got a littly cringy. But nevertheless, I gave the book 4 stars. The book fits multiple genres: romance, young adult, contemporary, ficiton, new adult, sports. There are also some tropes to find in this book: - Class differences - A little grumpy sunshine - Enemies to lovers The book is about Mallory Greenleaf. Once upon a time she was an upcoming chess talent, but currently she’s completely done with chess. She doesn’t want anything to have to wit hit. Chess messed up her life. But due to a twist of fate, Mallory decides to give it just one more go. It’ll earn her some money, which she can definitely use. Just one more go. Even though she doesn’t want to, Mallory then competes in a charity tournament. But when she accidentally sweeps the floor with current world champion aka enfant terrible of the chess scene, that one go is off the table. Mallory gets noticed by important people. And even worse: Sawyer keeps wanting to compete against Mallory. But why? For Mallory it’s best to walk away from all of this and to just go home. But in this chess scene there’s a lot of money going around, which fairly enough are rather convincing. Especially when you don’t have much. So Mallory decides to just stay for a while and promises herself she can stop anytime. But along the way Mallory discovers that there aren’t only games at play during the competitions. Trouble in Paradise - Portia Macintosh: ⭐️⭐️ Another classic rom com book - fluffy and very cheesy. With a name like Enemies to Lovers (or is it called trouble in paradise? Honestly I don’t know), I expected more from the “enemies” and “lovers” trope. The two main characters work at the same parent company but are constantly fighting/one upping each other for the better story. After building up how much they dislike each other, I wouldn’t have expected them to be in love one week later. The plot - forced to work on the same projects (this makes sense), blind date set up (saw this one coming from a mile away), and fake dating on a couples retreat for work all happening in the first 1/4 of the book was a little much for me to take in! I would’ve enjoyed a slightly more believable “forced proximity” trope than what this plot gave me. It wasn’t BAD, but I had higher expectations going into this book based on the reviews and promo I’ve seen for it. Just a bit too predictable for me. But that’s an awfully adult thing to either intentionally or unintentionally put on a child. As Britney ages, the Spears family comes into money - and it’s not hard to figure out where it came from. As another friend said, I too have always been team Britney. But damn. I’ve been her for Halloween, and I remember being in fifth grade and buying that iconic first cd, “…Baby,” and I remember painstakingly imitating several choreography routines from a handful of her videos. Nowhere near my target this year but that's ok as a lot of family stuff going on that's taken priority. I listened to this on Spotify (the only way I'm reading at the moment). Certainly made him seem more human, at times felt incredibly sorry for him (the trauma of loosing a mother so young is something that I understand) and at at others not really convinced he knows how privileged his life has been.
