Review Say it isn’t so 2001 DVD Rating: 1.5/5 Say it isn’t so has some funny moments but as a complete film it’s messy and unable to create character development. The film opened to negative critical reviews and was a commercial failure. Filmmaker James B. Rogers can’t salvage a consistent tone for this comedy and most of the jokes are about embarrassing its central character. Rogers has been the second unit director on a lot of other successful comedies and it’s a shame he chose this screenplay as a directing venture, as the screenplay clearly wasn’t in the right place. Heather Graham and Chris Klein are both likeable actors and sadly the material is beneath them. Unlike, The Farrelly Brothers that can balance good natured moments against the absurdity, Rogers appears stuck in continuous loop of pushing the Klein character right down to the point of unlike-ability, something that’s odd when it’s his story we’re suppose to enjoy. It’s certainly a dark comedy with many of the subjects covered and that’s not a problem considering some of the jokes do land at times. The problem is in the character design and the overall pacing of the story, it simple doesn’t connect. The inconsistency of the tone appears to want a light heartfelt appearance but the jokes want a much darker platform. This film has largely been forgotten and unfortunately for everyone involved it hasn’t been able to find a cult following. The film was clearly made given The Farrelly involvement and as a companion piece to their work it’s noticeable in certain scenes, but severely clunky to be truly appreciated. Critics had been waiting to attack a Farrelly Brothers production and this was their whipping horse. I don't know man. I haven't seen the original, so there's no reverence there for me, but what exactly is the point of this? Mediocre to solid action scenes (not really a fan of how they filmed the fights) aren't enough to sustain a two hour runtime for a film that tries to lampshade its way out of story clichees and has no interesting characters to speak of. Gyllenhaal does solid work and sells the physicality, but the "depth" of his character's background feels like something Liman is just ticking off of a check list. The film might need to be less polished, everything seems pretty sleek, which doesn't gel with the story and makes for a lack of atmosphere. I rewatched the film "Begin Again" this morning. I absolutely love this film! Begin Again is a pensive melancholic film with hints of humor and charm. The fantastic script by director John Carney is so heartfelt, poetic, and can be genuinely funny. It's a relateable story about dreams, starting over, finding yourself, and hope. It also showcases the power of music can have on our lives and the effects of fame. The film has some great songs and a beautiful score by Gregg Alexander. Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo in terrific performances playing a down on their luck songwriter and record executive. Knightley and Ruffalo have terrific chemistry together. The film has a wonderful supporting cast featuring Adam Levine, Hailee Steinfeld, James Corden, Ceelo Green, Catherine Keener, and Yasiin Bey. The film is well-edited by Andrew Marcus and has some really good cinematography by Yaron Orbach. It also has some solid art direction, set decoration, costume design, and production design. . I loved revisiting this one. The Outlaw Josey Wales is a much more consistent narrative than Pale Rider. There's enough in the story throughout the whole film that kept my interest. Clint Eastwood plays a grieving farmer who is subsequently felt betrayed by the leader of the holdouts, a renegade group of confederates whom he has joined. The leader finally surrendering his group to the Union army, only for them all to be coldly & brutally massacred. After a bloody shootout Eastwood's Josey Wales goes on the run trying to evade capture from both the posse that hunts him and the inevitable abundance of bounty hunters wishing to cash in. Eastwood is such a badass in this movie as he stares down his foes while delivering great dialogue and despatching of the bad guys in equal measure! Again, there's some fantastic scenery to chew on, or in Eastwood's case spit on and there's some great confrontational shootouts along the way towards his ambiguous salvation. I particularly liked Josey taking on a bunch of hostile comancheros who have taken a pair of pilgrims hostage. That scene even has an uncredited performance by the late Richard Farnsworth (The Straight Story). The Outlaw Josey Wales is one of the great westerns that revitalised the flagging genre. It's entertaining from start to finish, and it would be a good starting point for anyone unfamiliar with the western genre. Review The Dam Busters 1955 Blu-ray Rating: 5/5 The Dam Busters is an interesting and well crafted story that tells the story chronologically of the inception of the bomb to the heart pounding mission. It’s interesting to learn this film failed to land at the box office as the reputation for this film as a classic of the genre is what garnered my interest. The design and structure of this film surprised me and its documentary approach doesn’t provide this with a strong pace at first. Filmmaker Michael Anderson was able to bring his previous drama experience into this story and he ensures we know everything about the creation of bouncing bomb before that entertaining finale. Anderson provides the viewer with all the knowledge and the ambition of its inventor Barnes Wallis played by Michael Redgrave. The success of this film is ultimately the action packed conclusion and Anderson makes no mistakes here. There’s a lot of attention to detail and it’s a rewarding component of the film to have this many layers. The film is a classic war film and it’s certainly one of the all time best. High & Low - John Galliano (Kevin MacDonald, 2023) Quite an intimate insight into one of modern fashion’s most equally celebrated and controversial figures. Kevin MacDonald’s chronicle of the rise and fall of John Galliano charts an explosive life that spans 80s New Romanticism to the Kate Moss heroin chic era of the early 00’s. I must confess to feeling the film meanders somewhat when focusing on its subject’s spectacular fall from grace by way of Galliano’s antisemitic remarks, but I also have to credit it for really digging into the actual art behind the artist with an insightful perspective. It certainly does justice to Galliano’s reputation, whether or it not comes to grips with his controversies is another matter entirely. But I’d say MacDonald has knocked it out of the park in painting a portrait of one of the most important artists of the 21st century and the fashion landscape he redefined. Review Wild America 1997 DVD Rating: 3.5/5 Wild America is an entertaining adventure story that centres on the family dynamic and exploration of the natural world. This is one of the most Walt Disney films not produced by Walt Disney. Filmmaker William Dear has built his career on family stories that often include outlandish concepts. This is a more grounded story compared to the others and Dear provides an old school sentimentality, similar to a Joe Johnson film. Dear uses the story to focus on the bond of the three brothers as they navigate the obstacles of grown up and their quiet existence. The film wasn’t a hit when it released and it was another film that failed to capture Jonathan Taylor Thomas‘s fame. It’s not a classic by any means but it’s a whimsical story that has the building blocks of a family film. It’s not exactly a whole family story as the no-nonsense father is more concerned about the day to day life and can’t embrace what his children’s interests are. It’s a film I can connect with like many others who grew up with older generation sensibilities and I still enjoy watching this. It’s a harmless and an underrated Dear film, much like If Looks Could Kill.
