Maxixe and okra (quiabo), often show up in the same stews or vegetable casseroles and stews with meat, carne do sol, shrimp, both fresh and dried. Unlike cucumbers themselves, maxixe must be cooked to enjoy, although it is at its best when it is not overcooked. Like cucumbers they make delicious pickles. Pomegranate. I’ve harvested the one (and only!!) fruit from my backyard pomegranate tree - that I planted a year ago. Thankfully it’s perfectly ripened and the fruits arils are plump and juicy! The seedlings are growing stronger in the greenhouse every day and it won’t be long before they get planted out. 🌱 The raised beds have been full of self seeders and I’ve gradually been moving these on to make room for the veg seedlings moving in. I’ve got Sweet Peas ready to go on the arches and I’m leaving a couple of Foxgloves and some Borage in each bed as the flowers attract pollinators and create a potager style kitchen garden. 🍓 The strawberries have spread from the square fruit beds so I’ve curated these into a “border” to the lettuce that will go in soon. They love a really hard chop back at the beginning of Spring and within weeks look at how many flowers there are! The Oregano had a haircut too - chop it right to the ground and see the lime green leaves bush up in no time at all. Behind the potting bench I’ve got Crocosmia, Foxgloves, Borage and Forget me nots for DAYS. I’m slow to cut these back at the end of flowering to ensure lots of self seeders the following year. Dig up and spread around at your leisure in Autumn and Spring. Two of the courgettes have gone in the polytunnel today, reserves in main greenhouse for just incase. The lettuce has been moved out of their pots into their new bed, after a few days acclimatising to the polytunnel. The tomato plants have settled in and enjoying their new home. So all is good and going well. The cucumbers have been very thirsty the last couple of days, so imagine my surprise when l noticed 3 baby cucumbers on the vine. I felt it was time to get them settled in their new home, but we still have low night time temperatures and my last frost date is not til May. So l tried soaking carrots, makes it easier for sowing and knowing where they'll grow and how many. Finally, some figs from the fig tree! Have had to pick them a little early, so have taken them to mums to finish ripening in the sun (with a fly wire screen over top), to save from the birds. Tomato plants are definitely slowing down. It hasn't been an amazing tomato season for me this year. Cool nights for most of summer meant that they never really took off the way I'd hoped. Not enough to make my usual semi-dried tomatoes for storage, but enough so that we always have fresh ones in the fridge. Will have enough for a few jars of green tomato pickles, then see how we go next season.
