UNIQUE ART 4 UNIQUE heARTs is such a special art programme I deliver to numerous charities and families living with rare and complex needs. Joseph’s heART was amazing and based on the book “The little ladybird with a big heart” Joseph absolutely loved all the art techniques and materials we used today! The textures I implement into the art classes so he can feel his heART, touch his heART and listen to the children’s stories we read to inspire our art work. We giggled & jiggled and blew this one to the top of our ARTie list! 🫧Painting 🫧Teabag dying 🫧Flower picking 🫧Write words from the book 🫧Punched circles 🫧Trapped our moments in wax 🫧Wire twists 🫧Old helium balloons AND a lot of raspberry blowing along the way! Joseph giggles so much when his Dad blows them and pretends they are trumps! So I joined in, and it felt so good being silly AND ultimately my heART smiled the largest smile at his beaming and happy face 🙂 Joseph your smile just lightens up my day when I’m with you 🫧 @saradaviescc #livingwithcomplexneeds #specialeducationclassroom #specialeducationteacher #artforfamilies #artfordisabilities #complexneedsteacher #complexneedsfamily #arteducation #artfunding #rarediseaseawareness #raredisease #homeeducation #childrensbooks #inspirationfrombooks #childrenbookillustration #hobbycraft @hobbycrafthq @jollyjosh1 @reubensretreat @officiallouistheroux @spencermatthews @voguewilliams @staceysolomon #workingwithcharities #supportcharities #supportcharitiesandcauses #charitywork

We had a meeting earlier in the week that was a shit show - instead of offering a family at crisis point some semblance of empathy and help, it did the opposite and left us exasperated, exhausted, and completely defeated. I fell into a deep, dark hole that I was worried I couldn't climb out of. More fighting, begging, and shouting loudly to get our voices heard. Light at the end of the tunnel? There’s not even a glimmer with this fight and the darkness is intensifying. Unsurprisingly, I walked into the next appointment with the gastroenterology consultant prepared for a negative outcome. But when we arrived at the hospital we were met with a bubbly, engaging, well-prepared doctor. We spent almost an hour with him, Tilly managing to spend the entire appointment with us (she is a STAR!) and discussed everything I would have hoped for and more. He took us and our daughter’s ongoing gastro pain and discomfort seriously. He wants to help and understands why we desperately need a gastro expert in her team. He has suggestions for things to try now, things to try in the future, and some other options. I feared we’d be shunned away, told there was nothing else they could do and to accept that this is just the way she is. But we left the appointment with an investigative plan, his email address, and a whole lot of hope. The fights are exhausting and we're often left feeling like we won't get anywhere - but sometimes we can win. #complexneeds #complexneedsmum #complexneedsparent #complexneedsfamily #disabledparenting #disabledparent #disabledparentpower #disabledparentsuk #med13l #med13lawareness #med13lwarrior #med13lsyndrome

March 2024 A month of up, up, ups and a big fat down! What’s Henry been up to this month? So much. He’s learnt how to use two different types of switches with both his hands and both of his feet! He’s learnt to make noises in response to his sister and ‘talk’ to her. He’s been to the Houses of Parliament. He’s had a 48 hour EEG. Many many swims in the bath tub. Lots of walks to local parks and he’s been on three different types of swings in his firefly seat too! Plus we got our preschool sling just in time! Our holiday at the end of the month was cancelled with an unexpected admission for rhinovirus (again) and rather than swimming in the hydro pool each day we cuddled in his hospital bed. The nurses love Henry though and look after him so well. Onwards to April…what will you bring? Hopefully no unexpected admissions and it’s now pretty much a done deal that there will be no heart op after his recent viral infection. #march #adventures #housesofparliament #sensoryplay #adaptedplay #firefly #playground #complexneeds #complexneedsfamily #kickingcask

Subconsciously I felt I could no longer be trusted. I would look back on the events leading up to my son’s birth, and later diagnosis of severe brain damage, and worry that I lacked a mother’s instinct. That I had failed. Or that the frail traits of maternal instinct I had, were ignored in favour of not making a fuss. I’m pretty sure that my relentless pursuit of doing everything I could – and more when I was able to squeeze it in – was (and is) a testament to this guilt laden perspective of failing to keep my baby safe. My talk to @JoannaGrace on this week’s podcast made me feel so seen and slightly undone as we discuss a parent’s instinct. It’s The Skies We’re Under Podcast so we also discuss titties, work life balance and more. So..........St.Valentine's day. ❤️ I'm going to share some raw, honest vulnerability now. This day, 24 years ago, In the year 2000, St.Valentine's day, I was admitted to the Maudsley Hospital in London. This was my new millennium. After failing for two years to beat my extreme version of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder under the care of Portsmouth hospitals, it was clear that I needed more specialist treatment. I was too complex for Portsmouth. So, I was sent to the Maudsley as my last chance saloon. I left that hospital, after10 weeks, a very different person from the one who entered. Not completely recovered, but well on the path of my healing journey. I've been in full recovery since the end of 2000 I've achieved more than I ever dreamed possible in the years since. I could not have envisaged the hard work and determination I would have to draw on, but I've reached a place where I have a busy, fulfilled, and very happy life. I'm a single foster carer for children with complex additional needs, an author, and a small business owner. I have an amazing immediate and extended family. I have the best friends. And this year, St.Valentine's day 2024, I hear that I've been picked as a finalist from the nominees for an Inspirational Women of Portsmouth award. I am truly blown away. I shared my story, the full, raw account, in my book, Tug of Love. I did so to give Hope to others who suffer from mental health illness. I hope I've been a good mum and role model to my three young adults, my children, my grandchildren, and my foster children. We need to set our young people a good example. Our family moto is be kind. It's that simple. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthawareness #therapeuticfostercarer #complexneedsfamily #specialneedsparent #specialneedsfamily #fosterfamily #fostercarejourney #FosterCare #specialneedsparenting #therapeuticparenting #author #memoir #writer #smallbusinessbigheart #mentalhealthadvocate

The emotions of my son turning 18 have been BIG. I’ve been looking over my shoulder and reflecting on his life so far (and ours). It would be easy to fall down a rabbit warren of “what ifs.” To rehash the possible ways I could have done better – of which there are many, but I think I can be kind to younger Rachel. She really did do her best. However, this over shoulder gazing has also made me reflect on all the messages I have had as a woman and the mother of a disabled child which has framed my thinking and perspective. There are a lot. So many messages of shoulda woulda. So many subtle and unsubtle expectations. Take pain for example. There is no expectation that my other children will spend significant amounts of time in pain. Yet research from a couple of years ago shows that chronic pain in people with CP and Spina Bifida is the most common and least understood symptom (Petersen, 2021). That means pain is experienced most and yet without fully understanding it, surely that means it can’t be treated as well. I suspect there are many reasons for this but I wonder if the biggest elephant in the room is our ableist mind set which not only has lower expectations on the lives lived by disabled people but also what physical attributes quantify a good life. I know as the parent of a young man for whom walking was not an expected part of his future, standing frames and walkers were so important. I have swum in the soup of ableism for too long not to think that putting one foot in front of the other was more important than getting where you want to go. I was more zealous and vigilant about standing – even when it might be causing pain – than I was about lying support in bed and during the day. This is an uncomfortable perspective for me today. Yet, I did my best, I still do. And now I will continue to try and disentangle myself from the other ways ableism has warped my views of my son, his life and ours. #complexneedsfamily #parentalsupport #disabilityinclusion #valueofeveryone #disabilityinclusion #pmld #specialneedsparenting #learningdisability #cerebralpalsy #medicinelife #disabilitycommunity #parentsofspecialneeds

I’ve been looking at the numbers and I wonder whether the current deputyship application process is both ableist and discriminatory. For people with capacity, the process for Lasting Power of Attorney isn’t cheap but it is likely to be successful with only 2.4% of applications being rejected. For those who are most at risk – the small percentage of people who do not have capacity to apply for LPA – their loved ones go through the process of deputyship as there is no alternative process to enable them to be recognised by services as advocates and voices for their loved ones. But the Court of Protection rejects between 38 and over 70% of deputyship applications. So those people who require the greatest safeguarding measures (identified in CIPOLD, 2013 as having a person who loves them in their network advocating for them) are put at further risk by preventing them from having a key voice from someone who knows their context, aspirations and needs – doesn’t work 9-5, doesn’t have annual leave and doesn’t change role. Looking at any of the preventable death case reviews in recent years, communication, collaboration and a lack of understanding around the Mental Capacity Act frequently impacts the health and welfare of people with a learning disability. The current system doesn’t promote collaborative working, it disempowers the people most passionate about supporting people with complex neurodisabilities. #complexneeds #complexneedsfamily #parentalsupport #disabilityinclusion #valueofeveryone #disabilityinclusion #teamaroundthechild #pmld #specialneedsparenting #learningdisability #cerebralpalsy #livedexperience #coproduction #bridgingthegap #medicinelife #disabilityblogger #disabilityvlogger #dissabilitycommunity #parentsofspecialneeds #parentsofdisabledchildren

Festive greetings tis the season to – Go one week early to donate blood Accidentally send two Christmas cards to the same person Buy two of the same gifts (so niche not transferable) Have your 8-year share your bed because they are really unwell with tonsillitis and fevers – only for him to request a transfer at 2am because the snoring is so bad (eek 🙄) And when returning for blood donation discover Hb too low to donate meaning no freebie crisps or biscuit. In the next couple of weeks, we have greater expectations of fun, rest and more jobs to do with all the kiddos at home. For so many of us, Christmas is not how we would plan or expect it. It certainly isn’t the picture postcard version, but once you get over Jude Law not rocking up for a snog it can still be life with tinsel and bells and glimpses of joy and fun. Whatever it looks like for you – wishing you and yours a good festive period. The FINAL Episode of Season 2, ‘The Skies We’re Under’ podcast was a classic blend of rant, reality and inappropriate conversations. Sarah, Lucy & Rachel compare their current sh*t-o-meter readings while laughing, ranting and crying. They also talk about: • Their need for counselling (hint you can find therapists focused on parent carer well-being at @affinityhub.uk and @lapis_psychotherapy) • The awesomeness of Acute Liaison Nurses • The gap between our capability and capacity • … and how society’s ableist thinking is so ingrained we don’t even notice it Find us wherever you get your podcasts, and if you could spend four minutes liking and reviewing the podcast on whichever podcast platform you listen via, it all helps make Season 3 possible. I’ve been wrestling with the word empowerment. I heard it first as a student nurse in the late 90’s. I knew we were supposed to empower our patients to look after their health where they can. I always hear it in my work with practitioners and use it in my training. But like a pesky strawberry seed firmly wedged between my gnashers, something has started irritating me. The tone of empowerment highlights a shift of power. A shift from the healthcare/social care professional or system to the person or family. But why do they have the power in the first place? As a parent, the responsibility and power over the details of my child’s life lies with me. Doesn’t it? No – clearly not. My son’s life is scrutinised, judged, measured and assessed. I don’t have the authority or power for my eldest son like I do for my other children. Services, systems and practitioners can only empower parents of children with disabilities if they first own up to pillaging that power when the child was first diagnosed. Empowerment is about a power shift. The fact that it is part of service-land lingo exposes how systems perpetually disempower people daily. #empowerment #ParentCarer #complexneeds #complexneedsfamily #parentalsupport #disabilityinclusion #disabilityawareness #inclusion #disabilityinclusion #teamaroundthechild #pmld #specialneedsparenting #learningdisability #cerebralpalsy #livedexperience #coproduction #bridgingthegap #ICB #PersonalisedCare

Dear Professionals I’m not sure where to start because so many of you have the opportunity to deliver personalised care. Maybe you’re one of the many therapists (Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Speech And Language Therapist, to name but a few) who collude and agree when it’s best to meet and then ask that I adhere to ‘your’ agreed date and time. You may have seen a sneak peek on our stories yesterday but we are excited to launch....The Skies We're Under Puddle Huddle! Maybe as a parent carer you’ve got those wellies on and you're learning to dance in the rain - or maybe you are sick of the grey clouds and require a snorkel for the deep water which is swirling around your neckline. Either way - grab a cuppa or a glass of wine and get together with fellow parent carers in The Skies We’re Under Puddle Huddle. You will find us online twice each half term for 1 hour - time is precious, so let’s be realistic about the margins we have. There will be one session with a morning start time and one with an evening which will cover the same topics, you are welcome to come to both or choose a session that suits you best. Wednesday 17th January (10am) and Thursday 8th February (8pm) - "A nodding dog to the system" - The hoops we need to jump through and the times we need to say NO! ‘The Cracks That Let the Light In’ by Jess Moxham cracked me open. Talking to her on The Skies We're Under Podcast was a delight. Our conversation prompted me to think more about how my relationship with my son is soaked in the ableism I’ve been brainwashed with since I was born. The conversation with Jessica Moxham (@jessmoxham) is brimming with a mother’s love and the transformation required when we become the parent of a child with #disabilities. Listen today on Podbean, Apple, Audible or wherever you usually download your podcasts. Popping on to give a wee nod to the shed loads of stuff we have to take everywhere to do anything. I know I shouldn’t use absolute language but it is always, everywhere, doing anything AT ALL. ALL THE TIME and it NEVER goes to plan. Well, it’s a miracle when it does and no doubt we make a post about it – or at least a wee jig. Here's a photo of us going for a swim at Center Parcs. The young man pushed in wheelchair. The toilet seat being wheeled across the dirt in the dark by his brother. The massive bag of swim stuff put in a trolley, hoist slings and floatation aids (and youngest brother). We may also be blasting out toons at top volume as we go. Because if we are going to stick out like a sore thumb, we may as well go big or go home. Do you have any tricks about the Tetris mission of packing the car (my husband’s job) or taking stuff out and about? #complexneeds #complexneedsfamily #parentalsupport #disabilityinclusion #valueofeveryone #disabilityawareness #inclusion #disabilityinclusion #teamaroundthechild #pmld #specialneedsparenting #learningdisability #cerebralpalsy #livedexperience #coproduction #bridgingthegap

Moments in my motherhood. I shared this image on my stories but felt a strong need to have it here too. Maybe as a reminder to myself, maybe an "I see you Mama" to those that needed it. You see this is how I spend 100% of my life. Especially times out of the house. Always making sure I can keep Li-Li as calm and as safe as I can. My time predominantly taken up by her. By her needs. My boys having infinite amounts of patience and understanding. Fyfe taking on that caring role for both Zephyr at the times I can't, and Lilac in the moments I simply don't have the strength to give her what she needs. Because that happens too. I'm only human. And having the levels of patience needed to be Lilac's carer 24/7 just isn't possible. There's times I simply....cannot. do. it. Leaving the house is a huge, massive task. We can't do things spontaneously. We can't just "nip" somewhere. And this is her universe. We simply live in it. And God what an honour that is. But truthfully? It's exhausting at times. And since her medication was abruptly stopped due to supply issues, we are simply surviving right now. In any way possible. Using every tool we have. And every resource we can. I wouldn't change a single thing about her. She's incredible. She is just one of the best people in this entire universe!! But it's killing me seeing the struggle she's going through daily without her medication. We will get through this. We always do. Because it's us. But are things tough right now? Yeah, they are a little.......❤️ #complexneedsfamily

#parentcarerawarenessday Today is the first parent carer awareness day created by @braveparents a phenomenal charity that I am proud to be patron of. If you don’t know who Brave Parents are please take a look at their IG page. They are a small charity run for parent carers by parent carers and some amazing people too. Brave Parents recognises the challenges that the parents of children with complex medical needs face and focuses on encouraging us to take time for our own mental health and wellbeing. From hospital boxes, to big night in boxes and wellness day retreats Brave is there to help. I first came across Brave Parents through another medical parent on IG. They were running a subsidised wellness retreat that I was so lucky to get a place on. I absolutely loved the day. It was the first time since Henry was born that I concentrated on my needs. I met other medical parents for the first time too helping me to see that I wasn’t alone and created a circle of people I could talk to at 3am whilst in hospital! It was the first time I met people who really ‘got it’. You might have seen that I’ve been trying to set aside an hour or two once a week for some me time. Mine happened to be on a Wednesday (as I don’t work Wednesday eves and Matt was able to look after Henry too). I’ve managed three consecutive weeks focusing on my mental health. Week 1: a VERY long bath, wine and a book. Week 2: the pub with a great friend of ours (more wine!) Week 3: yoga at a wonderful studio opposite the hospital we are currently in. It’s a small thing, but it’s helping. As winter approaches, the lives of parent carers get harder and more isolated. We avoid the Christmas gatherings (germ fests!) and many of us spend weeks in hospital with our little ones. Brave sends parents hospital boxes full of super useful things (eye masks, coffee, chocolate and dry shampoo!) and you could help to fill these too with a small donation. If this has touched your heart…please take a look here https://braveparents.co.uk/how-you-can-help/ Sending a big (germ free!) hug to all parent carers out there! #braveparents #complexneedsfamily #parentcarer #disabilityparenting #medicalmumma

This book by K. Jane Lee is the story of how a Paediatric ITU consultant found herself on the other side of the bed when her daughter was born with disabilities. I can both recommend you read and suggest you avoid at all costs. It’s an easy and thoughtful read. I devoured it in a few days and then stayed under a blanket for a few days more. It had far too many similarities which resulted in falling off that cliff edge of emotions. Like being back in those early days with the added bonus of questioning every decision we made or didn’t make. If you have the emotional capacity to feel seen – would recommend. #parentcarers #complexdisability #specialneedsparents #complexneeds #complexneedsfamily #parentalsupport #specialneedsparenting

Next stop… @ridelondon ?! Matt and I would absolutely love to train and complete Ride London in 2024. We are crossing everything that @demelzacharity are given spaces for the event. We’d love to participate as parents of a complex needs child who benefits so much from their care. I’m not sure who would look after Henry during the ride but we’ll make that work somehow! If there is anyone reading this at #ridelondon please get in touch with your charity department and give #demelza as many spaces as you can for 2024. @mattday147 and I would love to put together a team of turquoise #demelzahospice warriors! ♡ E L L I E ♡ She deserves her own post today instead of sharing the limelight with her brother. On Friday night at Ameilas Young Highlanders awards. Ellie won Special Sibling Award. We actually never give her enough credit for what she does. She's emergency first aid trained, she can tube feed, she knows what to do in the event of a seizure and she is just the best big sister. She has spent so many nights not knowing what's going on while her brothers in hospital, so many times she's been passed from pillar to post while I've had to put Aaron first again, so many times we've had to cancel or change plans, all the times she's had to miss things or school because Aaron's needed hospital in Aberdeen or Edinburgh. The amount of times she's seen him been put in the back of an ambulance or me panic because his mini button has fell out his stomach 🤢 All the times when hes had seizures and I've been too scared to leave him alone so she sits with him so I can shower, or hoover. She reads to him and plays with him and all he does in return is try to bite her 🤣 She is my rock. The girl that gets me through. The girl that keeps me going. My ultimate best mate in the whole world. I am so so so proud of the girl she is. She deserves this so so much ❤️ #ameilasyounghighlanders #drummosiehotel #dan&grace #caleytimber #midgebitecafe #awardsnight #bestsister #specialsibling #complexneedsfamily #familylife

"I’m baffled that the chronological transition from age 17 to 18 means my son (who is entirely reliant on others for his safety, well-being, physical health and joy in his life) will no longer have the legal protection of a person who loves him advocating for him and coordinating his care – unless I go to court. It isn’t that I lose that right if there is a question that I don’t have his best interests at heart. It isn’t that if questions are raised about me dominating or limiting his choices or outcomes. It isn’t that suddenly services take responsibility for my son’s daily needs when it comes to safety, well-being, physical health or joy in his life – nope, that is still down to us. No. We no longer have the authority to fulfil our responsibilities …" RW Rachel’s latest blog “Deputyship: Another Disability Tax”, is online now. I had a dear old friend with dementia who very often forgot what we had talked about. She forgot the words spoken between us, but she rarely forgot how it made her feel. She remembered the time we spent together by the feelings I left her with. The same is true for me when I'm navigating a complex system of SEN, health and social care whilst advocating for my child. Even when I don’t remember everything a professional says, I remember how they made me feel. Whether I felt my son was addressed as the person central to the conversation, whether I was engaged, heard and respected. Yes, there are a lots of more important things that will be said when we meet, but let’s not forget that the little things can make a big difference. In a sea of jargon and policies that perpetuate a sense of powerlessness, using a person’s name cuts direct to our shared humanity and helps me feel seen. Our wide range of CPD-certified training is founded on lived experience and fuelled by research to bring about positive and meaningful change with actionable next steps. Our next specialist course on Communication and Coproduction with Parents / Carers takes place on October 31st priced at £95 per person (booking fee may apply). "We were part of a game of pass the parcel but unfortunately the music never stopped. No-one was sure about the collective part they played and they most certainly underestimated the impact of their contribution to the bigger picture, ‘William’s life!’" Sharon Goddard I read an article in the CoLab newsletter from last year, and this quote jumped out at me. This. All of this. It's like the music isn't stopping and practitioners know this isn't the layer with the prize but rather the forfeit. So, as the music fills the air, the parcel is hurriedly thrown to the next person. Like a hot potato no-ones wants to be landed with. As ever, this doesn't reflect the people being asked to handle the parcel - who are invested directly in our lives. It is the impact of them not having the resources, authority or skills to support us within the current system. I had a meeting this week when the words, "It seems you have slipped through the net" was spoken again. It isn't the first and won't be the last. That flippin net and it's ruddy great holes. When is someone going to stop the music and take responsibility? When are we going to mend that net and close those ever-growing holes? #complexneeds #complexneedsfamily #parentalsupport #disabilityinclusion #valueofeveryone #disabilityawareness #inclusion #disabilityinclusion #teamaroundthechild #pmld #specialneedsparenting #learningdisability #cerebralpalsy #livedexperience #coproduction #bridgingthegap

As parents, it is hard to think that simply because a person crosses a chronological threshold of eighteen years, they would legally no longer have their parents as their primary guardians acting to champion their unique and highly complex needs. Rachel’s blog “Deputyship: Another Disability Tax" can be read in our website's 'Supporting Families' section. (Link to website in bio). "It is hard to think that simply because a person crosses a chronological threshold of eighteen years, they would no longer have their parents as their primary guardians acting to champion their unique and highly complex needs. Instead, without intervention, this would fall to a faceless institution determined by budgets and targets, which is currently struggling to match the rhetoric of legislation with the reality of people’s lives. With time, our son’s needs will only increase. Knowing the finer details of his life, preferences, past and aspirations for the future will become more critical. It can only be fully provided by us, his parents. " With or without this deputyship, we will continue to be expected (and love) to provide for all of our son’s needs at home in his adulthood. All we are asking is that our daily responsibility be matched by the authority, agency and resources needed to carry it out. Without deputyship, local services with ever-changing transient employees would have the power to decide what is best for our son – without actually understanding or providing for those needs every day”. The biggest thank you to all of our wonderful friends for supporting us today and running/walking for #teamhenry We are so grateful to this bunch of amazing people who have had our backs since before Henry was even born and every single day since. You are our village and have helped us get through the last 19 months in so many different ways. From coffee and walks, to way too much wine, hugs and FaceTimes and of course visiting us in hospital. #thankyou so much. We’ve raised a massive £400 so far via the QR code for @caskresearch and a further £360 via the link on our profile page on IG. People’s generosity today was amazing. We had an incredibly smiley Henry this morning. Possibly the most we’ve ever seen him smile ever. Perhaps he knew that all the fuss was about him and his amazing CASK friends too. #kickingcask #medicalmumma #babyhenry #complexneedsfamily #charity @mattday147 @simonkidsley @this_sen_mom_likes_to_run @lizkidsley @amberrosekidsley @shazsarchamy @nazz_87 @alexandralucie78 @tim_keenoy

What is CASK? We’ve had so many new followers recently and lots of incredibly kind donations too. I thought it might help to explain a little bit about Henry’s condition. The CASK gene is responsible for brain development. Females have two CASK genes, males one. Henry’s CASK gene is a nonsense gene. So the way it is written doesn’t make sense. This means that his body and brain is unable to develop as it should do. So very little is known about CASK which was only discovered in 2008. In fact there are only around 200 diagnosed cases worldwide. About 10% of these are boys. Meaning that Henry is super rare! The impact of a CASK genetic mutation is different in every child. Some girls can walk, some can’t. Many boys aren’t able to sit up or roll or hold their heads up. But some can. Some girls are as badly affected as boys. There’s a lot that we don’t know about CASK and it’s effects. Generally, boys are much more affected than girls. Then there’s the epilepsy which affects many CASK children. This is the worst part for me. It’s scary, it’s horrible and every time Henry has seizures I panic. The reality is that they could kill him one day. I try not to compare Henry to other CASK children. He is who he is and he was meant to be this way. Since conception Henry has always had a nonsense CASK gene. It gives me some peace to know that it’s not our fault or my fault and that we didn’t cause him to have such a profound disability. As I’ve said before our lives have changed so much since Henry was born. Life is much harder but in many ways we have had some amazing opportunities and the way we look at life has changed profoundly. I’m really grateful for this if I’m honest. You may have noticed that we are fundraising right now for @caskresearch which is the UK charity for Henry’s condition. As a family we will be running a #raceforresearch on Saturday 15th July alongside lots of our friends in Crystal Palace park. Please join #teamhenry and run or walk or ride a 5k on Saturday if you can. Use the two hashtags above ⬆️ so that we can repost too! If you can donate please do! #kickingcask #medicalmumma #5k #running #parkrun #epilepsy #complexneedsfamily

As a parent carer, I am placed at the centre of a network of professionals. Having sat down one day in 2020, I worked out exactly how many people that included. It amounted to over eighty practitioners, professionals, therapists, administrative staff and engineers. Eighty!!! This is why I firmly believe that Co-production Week and training practitioners in communicating and working well with families is the single most powerful training they can experience. It was a privilege to spend the evening with fellow Parent Carers at our workshop on Tuesday Night. The topic was 'Making Complaints, Working Together and Not Losing Your S**t'. Why do I think not losing your cool is important? Because we need to be nice? Because we should trust the system? Because it's unladylike? Heck no. It is good not to lose our shit when complaining about poor services primarily because we are worthy of not being emotionally traumatised by advocating for our child. Secondly, too often, big emotions are used as another excuse to minimise our experiences and the value of our voices. Not losing our cool is as much about looking after ourselves as protecting the practitioners who work in a challenging system. That doesn’t mean I don’t think we shouldn't be emotional or explain our feelings. Rather we must do it in a way that isn't weaponised against us. As Brené Brown says 'Clear is kind'. Remember: Strong back, soft front, wild heart. Know our expertise and knowledge. Be open to different points of view, and the possibility of having our minds changed. Find an alternative way. The out-of-the-box, creative, off-piste option. 'Be kind and take no shit.' (Taken from Cassandra Speaks by Elizabeth Lesser) Image description: Graphic of a black woman with black hair up in a bun wearing a red short-sleeved cropped top and black leggings. “Gradually, I discovered a new way of looking at my son. With time, I stopped … wanting the weather to change or the view to be different. Instead, I prepared to dress more appropriately and appreciate where I was. I began to love the skies I was under. I had been so consumed with a sense of being restricted and tied down that I was missing the charm of where I was. With time, I began to breathe in the beautiful vista before me as I tried to stop hankering after the scenery of my dreams.” What happens when life falls apart? What do you do with the broken pieces of your dreams? “When my son was born, my husband and I found ourselves transformed from healthcare professionals (GP and nurse) to ‘Dad’ and ‘Mum.’ The transition was instantaneous. The gap between each version of ourselves, however, felt vast. In the intensive care unit, watching my son not breathe, I glanced fearfully at the monitors. I knew what they meant and silenced alarms when nurses didn’t come. I noticed how differently nurses spoke to my husband and I when they knew he was a doctor and I a nurse. It wasn’t so much that they used more medical jargon – although that did happen – it was the difference between being ‘spoken at’ and ‘worked with’. It is a pattern which has continued over the last eighteen years. And it’s why Co-production Week is now marked clearly on my calendar”. Ever feel like you are losing control? One of the first things to disappear when becoming the parent of a child with #SEN or complex medical needs is a sense of control. Some people live deluded that they are the master of their own destiny. But for parents of someone with #disabilities, the weeks ahead can be shaped by a growing list of professionals and their lengthening to-do lists. Born at the Right Time training always starts with talking about the experiences of becoming the parent of a child with complex needs. Lived experience is at our heart. The recent BBC series ‘Best Interests’ highlights the complexities of heart-breaking decisions from all perspectives. For parents like me, it can feel like we have fallen headfirst into a Vulnerability Labyrinth. This sense of losing control is universal to anyone hearing the well-crafted words of someone breaking bad news. It starts with a life-changing event - diagnosis, trauma or defining moment. The experience splits life into 'before' and 'after'; changing hopes, dreams and expectations for the future. In the midst of it all ... is a sense of losing control. Read more in my updated 'Losing Control' blog- see Linktr.ee bio for link. [READ the BLOG| Losing Control] Have you watched the BBC show Best Interests? What are your thoughts? Dear Professionals I’m not sure where to start because so many of you have the opportunity to deliver personalised care. Maybe you’re one of the many therapists (Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Speech And Language Therapist, to name but a few) who collude and agree when it’s best to meet and then ask that I adhere to ‘your’ agreed date and time. Please know I’m grateful for your input, skills and knowledge. I know you are busy doing your best but don’t forget I have a diary, too and am a vital contributor to any discussion about my child. And please don’t forget that personalised care is often about the little things … Read the rest of Rachel’s recently-updated blog ‘Dear professional’ on our website (bornattherighttime.com) or see the link in bio. A person who is a carer doesn’t always look like they’re caring ... just like It is widely accepted that a person who is disabled doesn’t necessarily ‘look’ disabled. This year’s Carers’ Week takes place from 5-11 June to support the millions of unpaid carers in the UK and to spread the word about the challenges they face throughout the year. This time last year, Rachel wrote a blog about the many hidden roles and the unseen toll of being a carer. And this is precisely why Born at the Right Time is passionate about supporting families by connecting them to their own stories, each other, their wider community and the practitioners commissioned to support them.
