Autism Acceptance Month ♾️ It’s certainly a journey ♾️ We are still learning everyday, but one thing I have learnt is to ignore those that don’t get it. That don’t try to get it. That are to ignorant to want to get it. ♾️ Because when you do, and when you get to know my child, the world is a much brighter place. ♾️ This month I have watched her grow, mature and become more aware of her needs and being able to communicate them more ♾️ The past 6 months have been tough on us all, but so worth it to be where we are now ♾️ My EB. We do it together pudding ♾️ #asd #autismawareness #sen #adhd #pda #specialneeds #autismawarenessmonth #autismacceptance #autistic #parentcarer #buddiesloveplay #autisticchild #autismacceptancemonth

I'm exhausted I'm coming down with a cold Most of me wanted to go back to bed yesterday But I didn't I'd booked on a day in the woods with Groundworks Wellbeing and @rewilding_adventure_uk and one of the promises I've made to myself recently it's to say yes more, to do more, to live more... The struggles and the challenges aren't changing. The support doesn't appear to be changing The battles don't get any easier But what can change is me ... The way I approach life The experiences I have The life I live So I gathered myself up and off I went And I had absolutely the best day. Learning new skills with new tools, refreshing existing knowledge, meeting new people in the most tranquil forest. The last photo is a woodland mallet, made all by myself from a tree I helped cut down! ... And I'm very proud of it! I was covered in mud, I spent half the time trying to stop myself falling over, I'm aching today... And I will absolutely do it again! [Photo one: the path into the woodland with a sign saying 'rewilding camp' Photo two: the camp under a parachute canopy in the woodland Photo three: collage of four photos of me making a fire then the mallet Photo four: my finished woodland mallet on a tree stump] . . . . . . . . . #dancingintherain #woodland #rewilding #selfcare #wellbeing #takearisk #newskills #woodlands #lifeexperience #forestschool #forestwalk #parent #parentcarer #carer #careforyourself #carerswellbeing #evolving

We had a neurology appointment last week, they’ve done a plan to wean off of Baclofen and swapping nitrazepam for diazepam. I’ve been chasing up the new med every day since the appointment to be told it’s out of stock everywhere but had a phone call from one of D’s Drs today to let me know it’s been waiting at the pharmacy since last week but when I called the pharmacy an hour before the phone call they had no record of it. Got to go to the hospital tomorrow to figure out where the medication is, we also have a CDC appointment tomorrow and a CVI appointment tomorrow alongside having my baby nephew for the day too 😅 today we had an appointment with a new private physiotherapist, she was really pleased with D and we’ve scheduled some home appointments in. Sleep is the worst it’s ever been, I’d even say worse than what it was like when she was a newborn. D has been on a blended diet since she was probably 10 months old but it’s been mainly pouches but last weekend I took the plunge and I’ve got a blender and I’ve batch cooked/blended all of her meals/snacks for the week and it was a lot easier than I thought it was gonna be, regret not doing it sooner. We have 2/3 appointments daily for the next few weeks but I am in the process of getting D a passport sorted and I’m planning a last minute holiday in June if her passport comes before 🤞 #cerebralpalsyalliance #cerebralpalsybaby #cerebralpalsy #cerebralpalsykids #cerebralpalsywarrior #cerebralpalsymom #dystonia #epilepsy #sen #specialneeds #gdd #physio #solomama #solomum #specialneedsmum #hie #braininjuryawareness #parentcarer

Neuro… huh? While “neurodiversity” was designed to describe the different ways that all human brains work, it’s largely used in conversations around the likes of autism, ADHD and learning disabilities. As are its offshoots, including “neurodivergent” and “neurodivergence”. Here is where things can get confusing. How do we use these terms correctly? Enter Jess Meredith, a proud ADHDer, parent of neurodiverse children and founder of @differingminds, a social enterprise dedicated to neurodiversity advocacy. Head to the link in our bio for the story 💚 [ID: a white tile with black writing reads: neurodivergent, neurodivergence or neurodiversity?] #autism #autismawareness #autismacceptance #autismcommunity #neurodiversity #autistic #caregiving #disability #parentcarer #healthcare #healthtech #care #caregivers #caregiver #caregiversupport #family #love #caregiverlife #disabilityawareness

Resilience, the capacity to bounce back, recover quickly when we are faced with challenges and difficulties. Physical and mental toughness. I find myself conflicted about resilience. On one hand I would say resilience is one of my strongest attributes, but there's a reason it is so strong, it's strong because of the number of times I've been to hell and back. But without the strength I now have because of those experiences, without knowing I had that strength within me the last few years would have been very different. But now I hope there are no more resilience building experiences, no more times that I need to dig deep to find strength. I have enough resilience, enough strength, enough experiences. Now is a time for ease, for softness, for contentment. Innately and societally, people respect my son as a child much more than they do my daughter. Join me explore how we, as parents and carers, can help our children regulate emotions and behaviour during meltdowns. 💡 I've said it before and I'll say it again: meltdowns are not simply a way to get your attention... they run deeper. They're seeking connection, asking for help to address a problem they're not able to properly communicate, a way escape overwhelming situations, or due to sensory overload. Starting Monday, 29th April, join us for a 5-day virtual workshop designed for parents and carers of neurodiverse children. We'll learn to identify triggers, how to communicate effectively, navigate feelings of guilt and shame (don't worry, I get it, and it's okay!), and how to best to be their advocate. In doing so, we nurture them into living empowered and fulfilled lives! 🌟 🤝 So here's to empowering ourselves, advocating for our children, and building a supportive community together. Comment "ME" or head to the link in my profile to get access.

One of my new favourite places. 🌊 Hi my lovelies. It’s been a little while hasn’t it? So much has been going on in my little life lately that I’ve struggled to keep up with much of anything honestly. We’ve had some pretty big life changes too which have just knocked me for six. However, I’m so pleased to say I’ve nearly finished the unit I’ve been stressing about for a while and completed my first year. Yes, I know what you’re probably all thinking. You’ve been studying for so long and you’re only just completing the first year?! Part time studying is still difficult when you have a family, and a neurodivergent one at that. Add in all of what I have been facing this past year or two, you’d understand why it has taken me so long. But you know what, it doesn’t matter. I’m finding my feet and I’ll get there. I’m so proud to even be at this point, I have been wanting to give this up in all honestly, but I love it so much I just don’t want too. 🥺 One day at a time, one foot in front of the other. 🌼 Love Always. 🤍 . . . . #poldhucovebeach #poldhubeachcafe #landscapephotography #dabbling #beach #moodyviews #cornwall #cornish #home #exploring #familylife #neurodivergent #parentcarer #homeeducator #studentphotography #weareoca #student #lifelessons #photographer #cornwallphotographer

On top of the immense physical, emotional, and logistical challenges of caring for a child with special needs, these parents often have to contend with lack of understanding and accessibility from the broader community. It’s an exhausting battle on multiple fronts - advocating for your child’s specific medical and educational requirements, while also fighting against societal ignorance and lack of inclusion. The dual role of caregiver and activist can be utterly draining. And yet, special needs parents rise to the occasion with remarkable resilience and determination. They push tirelessly to ensure their child’s unique needs are met, all while educating others and breaking down barriers. The world is slowly but surely becoming more accessible and inclusive, thanks to your relentless efforts.

"You know how Instagram shows us random things now, from random people that we don't follow? Occasionally I get shown some parent who’s really sad because their autistic kid doesn’t get invited to parties. And I’m like, but is your child sad about that? If they are, then it’s awful, of course. You don’t ever want your child to feel excluded, but I don’t think my son has ever been that worried about not being invited to places. He doesn’t like kids his own age that much," says @pennywincer. "We do tend to impose our own ideas about what would have made us happy, and what we would have wanted. So I’m constantly trying to think, well, does he care? Does he really want that?" The author of 'Tender: The Imperfect Art of Caring' shares this and much more in her Parent Carer Collective interview. Like genuinely, it was nervous poo time 🙈. 💩 I was terrified that after allllll that fighting and report filling and assessments, we’d suddenly be told they were going to take it away. That my son would have to go back to mainstream school. That they’d say at the first sign of any progress, “we’re withdrawing it”. 💩 It never happened. Well it hasn’t yet anyway and I’ve been surviving this system for over a decade. 💩 Years have rolled by. All of my children have an EHCP and we’ve survived every annual review. 💩 This system sucks. It’s “design” (for want of a better word because I’m certain no engineering went into it, it was just cobbled together on the back of a cig packet in the pub one evening 😂. Showing my age I realise as you can’t smoke in the pub these days!) does nothing but exacerbate parental anxiety. All hopes were pinned on a wretched pack of papers that don’t feel like they’re within your control. But it’s important to know, however unsteady the foundations feel, you’re going to be ok. 💩 #parentcarer #ehcp #iep #annualreview #ehcpreview

Carer’s Allowance overpayments are causing distress to families with disabled children. Contact has heard from parents who have had a small lump sum pay rise which has pushed them over the limit, so they have had to pay it back. Or they have been worried about or in some cases refused a pay rise for fear of losing their Carer’s Allowance. Contact has long campaigned for improvements to Carer’s Allowance – an increase in the weekly payment, an increase in the earnings limit and the removal of the cliff edge when a carer earns over that limit. As well as reforming the system so that carers who study or claim a pension are not penalised. This quote perfectly encapsulates the essence of special needs parenting. While the physical and practical demands can be immense, the true power and resilience comes from the boundless love and unyielding determination of these incredible parents. Raising a child with disabilities or special needs requires navigating a complex web of medical, educational, and therapeutic challenges. It’s not for the faint of heart. And yet, special needs parents rise to the occasion every single day, driven by an unshakeable commitment to ensuring their child thrives. Their strength isn’t measured in physical prowess, but in the fierce advocacy, unparalleled patience, and inspiring creativity they demonstrate. These parents teach us all that the greatest fortitude lies not in bodily might, but in the depths of the human spirit. To all the special needs parents out there - you are true heroes. Your love and determination in the face of adversity is awe-inspiring. Keep being the fierce, compassionate champions your children need. The world is better because of you.

Little D has had an up and down week or so. Started a new medication so weaned off Trihexy as her Dr didn’t want her on 2 dystonia meds but after 2 days of being off Trihexy the Dr put D back on it alongside the new med as things only got worse coming off of the Trihexy, so now we are back on Tri but a lower dose and the new medication and the Baclofen was upped. We thought we had turned a corner as we had 3 good days but it’s quickly gone back to how she was beforehand. We see her neurologist this week so I’m hoping they have some better answers, we should also get the results from her eeg that we had done weeks ago. Last night D was unsettled from 5pm to 7.30pm then from 9pm to 3am where she then slept on me until 7am and woke up unsettled still, she had an unsettled morning until her morning meds kicked in where I also upped the trihexy (within the range I have been given by the drs so I can increase when needed without having to ask the Drs each time) which did seem to help ease things until 4pm!! #cerebralpalsyalliance #cerebralpalsybaby #cerebralpalsy #cerebralpalsykids #cerebralpalsywarrior #cerebralpalsymom #dystonia #epilepsy #sen #specialneeds #gdd #physio #solomama #solomum #specialneedsmum #hie #braininjuryawareness #parentcarer

Each month I hold an online Mindful Circle for parent carers If you have never been to a circle before you may be wondering what it involves. A circle is a place where people come together and 'hold space' for one another, for people to express their thoughts and worries, or just be somewhere without judgement or advice, to give them you full attention and to receive time in return. It is a chance to relax and recharge You will also learn some ways to relax on a regular basis Each time there is a meditation and one or two mindful techniques. I hope you will join us and create some space for yourself. . . . . . . . . . . #dancingintherain #mindful #mindfulness #selfcare #parentcarer #parent #carer #mindfulmoment #meditation #mindfulcircle #sendparents #selfcompassion

We want to make as memories as possible, and this is the first one we got to make.I want to thank Harry’s Pals for making this so stress free and for giving us the opportunity to make memories that will last a lifetime. It was a much needed break. I hope that you can continue to keep helping families like mine”. If this inspires you to help then please consider donating the cost of a coffee each month (or more if you are able) so that we are able to support more families like Olivia’s. It takes seconds to set up a regular donation at www.justgiving.com/harryspals. Thank you #parentcarer #sendparenting #mentalhealth #carer #disability

Pause Breathe When you are a parent carer weekends are not generally relaxing. Family time, joy, laughter, time to be together, but relaxing is a lot less likely. So when Monday comes, when your kids are in school, that relief of dropping them off, the bus picking them up is felt through your whole body. Lean into this, allow yourself to feel it, it does not make you a bad parent, there is nothing to feel guilty for, we are human and allowing ourselves to feel is part of that being. So allow yourself to take the time, whatever you have, even if it's five minutes and breathe into it. Open your eyes and look around you, in the rain, breathe into the world, breathe into nature Breathe. Currently a lot going on…. Sorry to all the folks who were hoping for a market visit over the weekend, unforeseen circumstances and all 🙏🏻 Please feel free to shop online ….. but in a week …. Someone’s going on a little holiday first 🙌🏻 😉 Miraculously we have managed to organise a little respite for ourselves, so the dad and I are jetting over to Vietnam for a short spell…. He is beyond excited, counting the days, and I am busy preparing handover notes, filling supplements, cooking in advance, reorganising Juno’s schedule and filled with trepidation…,..so many moving parts and potential calamities 😬 Nevertheless the bags are nearly packed, a new frock purchased, books chosen and maybe, just maybe, this time we will actually pull it off 🤞🏼 . . . . , . #respite #specialneedsfamily #parentalholiday #vietnam #travelgram #goa #parentcarers #parentcarer #disabilityawareness

All so often we try to change our children. Sometimes the people we need to change are ourselves. There can be so many factors at play which impact how we parent our children - they determine the way that we approach things - and they can be the factors that prevent us from being open to try new ideas. Just because parenting styles are passed down or learnt doesn't actually mean that they are the right ones to use. Looking at the list below are there any tick points that you acknowledge may have influenced your own approaches to parenting? I dare to say all four categories affected my own start to parenting and were the reasons which prevented me from following my own instincts. It has taken a lot of work to undo those factors and I still need to continue to put the work in to improve my ability to parent on intuition. Have you guys been able to free yourself (and even unlearn techniques) to make space for a more collaborative style of parenting? Or did you start better at the get go? I would love to know. This is also a theme that is woven through my next novel 𝘽𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙍𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙗𝙤𝙬 which I hope will explain it in more detail 🖤🌈

“I think we have something really unique – a luxurious amount of appreciation for the itsy bitsy things in life, and this makes it that much better. Being able to experience that and notice that about yourself is pretty cool.” Beautiful words from our friend Effie Parks @onceuponagene.podcast, who you can see here with her sweet son, Ford. On Monday we asked parent carers to share tips & tricks that they thought other parent carers should know, and we had a wonderful and overwhelming response. Here's one of our favourites from Talia, a parent carer: "Short break/social worker assessments for respite. Its a slog but worth it when it all lines up." When we took this photo we were happy, enjoying a lovely walk together. But when I look back on it, I feel guilty. Esmae was at respite, and although she was having a great time, we should have been on a walk as a family. But family walks are hard. Esmae doesn't love her buggy, and it's impossible to take her for a walk in the woods. We are looking into a carrier, but with her legs being so tight, that's tricky, too. So for now we enjoy life. Sometimes together, sometimes separate. #parentcarer #disabilityawareness #mumguilt Life with a disability | Parent Carer | Mum Guilt

Thought I'd give you a little laugh today… Earlier this week my car was getting collected to be repaired (two months after someone drove into the back of us but that is a whole other story … or two… and not very funny) so I had to empty everything out of it. After dodging the vast quantities of rain we've had this week to get all the random stuff and excessive amounts of rubbish that seems to collect itself in cars, I just had the car seat left to get out. Obviously it's one of those overly complicated isofix, five point malarkeys and the isofix connectors weren't playing ball, so I had this great idea to shut the door while I sorted it … with me inside … well obviously I have the child locks on the doors … not something I thought of BEFORE I shut the door … Anyway, after a little panic … followed by a very inelegant climb/ scramble/ flop into the front of the car I got the car seat out … who knows what the neighbours thought … I mean I didn't think it was very funny at the time … But a life without a few funny stories wouldn't be very interesting would it? . . . . . . . . . . #dancingintherain #funnystory #laugh #selfawareness #selfcare #wellbeing #wellness #parentcarer #parent #carer #carseat #senparenting #sendfamilies #senblogger

Mythbusters - SEND transport can be a minefield to navigate. For those aged under 5 and over 16, there is currently no statutory offer. Each local area can offer whatever they feel is most suitable, such as a personal transport budget or possibly no transport at all. But the law that describes eligibility for SEND transport does make it clear how they should apply an offer if they choose to make one. It also covers those aged 5-16. We developed these mythbusters to help families quickly respond to their concerns and challenge where decisions may be made without due considerations of the legal entitlement. #SEND #Transport #Disability #ParentCarer #participation #coproduction #PreparationForAdulthood #mythbuster
