We love reading multicultural books and learning & understanding of others customs and cultures. The colorful illustrations in the book also made it very attractive to their eyes. I personally love when books have recipes sonthat we can also try some of the foods shown in the book. I decided to try the Mango Lassi as we have enjoyed it before and it was yummy (I did add more mangoes than it called for since we love the mango flavor). It was a perfect addition to our story time. Today I wanted to share this heartwarming and stunning childrens picture book Happy Diwali, written by Sanyukta Mathur and written and illustrated by Courtney Pippin-Mathur. Diwali is a South Asian holiday celebrated by many people around the world. People from various religions celebrate slightly different versions of Diwali. The word Diwali itself comes from the ancient Sanskrit word deepavali which translates to "rows of lights." Which is pretty fitting because Diwali is known to many as the festival of lights. In the Hindu religion, Diwali specifically honors the female Goddess Lakshmi who we light dias (oil lamps) for so she can find her way and bless our homes with prosperity and wealth. Diwali also marks the beginning of the Hindu and Jain new years. I remember growing up and while all the kids I went to school with were excited about Christmas, I was excited for Diwali because it meant decorating the house and dressing up in traditional Indian clothes and of course lighting sparklers outside the house. I'm so grateful to see more and more South Asian representation in books and this one in particular is one I recommend to everyone. I currently have it displayed on the top of one of ny bookshelves and I cannot wait to share it with my future kids. Thank you to @storygramkids for sending me a copy of Happy Diwali!
