Aside from a select few, the men around her were excellent character studies of the misogyny and power plays that marked the time period. Based on a true story, Giulia did exist, and did perform the function the men around her commanded her to do. What happened to her next is a mystery; as we all know, women rarely make a mark in the history books. What This Week?! Photo 1: I really should get better at showing the face behind the gram! I promise, Iโll do better! Photo 2: Every Saturday, we take a mini road trip to check the progress of our new house! This past week, they bricked 3 of the 4 exterior walls, installed most of the trim, and put up most of the interior doors. They also added wood to the fireplace and were installing the ceilings on the porches while we were there. We estimate that this week will involve the installation of the cabinets and countertops, which is super exciting. Our new estimated completion date is May 24! Photo 3: Just some appreciation for the views in our new neighborhood! Photo 4: My daughter is currently 18 weeks (due late September), and she is scheduled for her gender ultrasound on Friday. She wants a gender reveal, so only my mother and I will know for about a month and a half! Everyone thinks itโs a boy. Photo 5: I have officially started reading ACOTAR for my buddy read with @whenmalanereads . [A history of fashion - a guide for writers] - Some other stuff: I felt like being kinda a bit transparent about this post for whatever reason. Feel free to ignore. I might make a post on describing different bits of fashion later on, and maybe posts that do deep dives into specific eras. I find that my own writing should add a bit more descriptions on what characters wear, which partially influenced this post. Also, I have been doing a lot of drawing as well, and figured this would be useful. I also used this post to experiment with adding images since I find them to be more helpful with this kind of topic and had never done so before. There are some things that this post could improve with. For starters, the section with Rome could be merged with Ancient Greek, to add room for more different cultures elsewhere in the world. ๐ One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston๐ With a buzzy premise to do with time travel and romance I did have high hopes for this read, but it was a little bit of a let down. The book was a bit too long and at times challenging to continue but I persevered. The characters were fun but there were so many that it was at times hard to follow and I didnโt love our main character. I found it challenging to invest in what she was invested in. The author really delved into the psyche and motivation of each character while also telling a fast paced story of crime and revenge. There are more than one sequence in this book that can truly be termed heartstopping, especially a shootout sequence on a Canadian highway. That just takes the cake. THE HUSBANDS by Holly Gramazio was a fun little magical realism book. It was an excellent debut, great on audio- a stellar @readwithjenna choice!โฃ โฃ The gist of the story is this- one day Lauren returns home to her flat in London and she has a husband she doesnโt remember. Not only that but every time he climbs up into the attic a new husband emerges. Some stick around for awhile- some absolutely do not! Fun right?โฃ โฃ Anyway, this was a cute story. I will say it got a little long in the middle and I was constantly thinking โhow will this all wrap up?!โ Well, I feel like the ending was a blur, not sure if was a great conclusion. ๐คท๐ผโโ๏ธโฃ โฃ The audio (thank you @librofm & @prhaudio!) was excellent though. I loved the accents. ๐ชBook Review๐ช The Locked Door by Freida McFadden @fmcfaddenauthor While eleven-year-old Nora Davis was up in her bedroom doing homework, she had no idea her father was killing women in the basement. Decades later, Noraโs father is spending his life behind bars, and Nora is a successful surgeon with a quiet, solitary existence. Nobody knows her father was a notorious serial killer. And she intends to keep it that way. Then, she discovers that her female patients have been murdered, with their hands severed, in the same manner as her father used to kill his victims. Somebody knows who Nora is. Somebody wants her to take the fall for this unthinkable crime. But sheโs not a killer like her father. As long as the police doesn't look in her basement. I'm on a McFadden binge frenzy right now. I love how addictive her books are! From the beginning to the end, it is nothing but suspenseful. The tension and suspense build as the story progresses and I was thrown by the multiple twists. As a seasoned thriller reader, I thought I knew who the killer is. Turns out, I have my guess wrong (as always with McFadden's books ๐ ). I enjoyed this and I'm giving this a 4โญ rating. I'm deducting this a star because some parts seem a bit illogical. Nora is a serial killer's daughter with a tendency to kill animals and hurt her classmates when she was younger. She also is excited when she cuts open her patients (she is a surgeon). How does she turn from having psychopathic traits and urges to becoming a normal and successful surgeon? I'd assume she probably could have controlled her urges. Overall despite its flaw, this is still a fun read. I donโt think Iโve had more messages about a book! Ever! Oona has QUITE the fan base โฆand for good reason! OONA OUT OF ORDER by Margarita Montimore has skyrocketed up into my top books of the year.โฃ โฃ Do you like the movie 13 Going on 30? What about 50 First Dates? Do you ever want to fast forward to the future (HARDLY) or slide back into the past (YES!)?โฃ โฃ Itโs Oonaโs 19th birthday, New Yearโs Eve 1982. As the clock strikes midnight Oona faints and wakes up 51 years old. Yes, she is quite shocked to say the least. Oona learns that with each year she will leap into another at random. So she experiences her lifeโฆ out of order. โฃ โฃ I LOVED this book SO much. I must say that 1991 Oona was my favorite, she was a bit of a crazy club kid. This book was way fun but did have some sadness, as friends and family come and go (out of order). I enjoyed learning about the advances in tech through Oonaโs eyes and the changes in pop culture and trends. โฃ โฃ Oona was the absolute best and will live rent free in my heart forever. โฃ โฃ Have I convinced you to read it yet?!โฃ โฃ ๐ค๐ค๐ค
This book has been on my TBR for a long time, and I always wanted to read it in April. Aprils came and went in succession and I still hadnโt picked it up. Now, I have. Oh, what a delightful read! This is a book that will have you dreaming of Mediterranean breezes and gardens full of flowers, of the cool, Spring air and the sunbeams that make you feel all aglow. In essence, this is a story about women, although men make their way into it eventually. Four women of different backgrounds, not known to each other, each decide to answer an advertisement offering a villa in Italy for a month. It is beautiful and meandering, a novella about the ways in which change can happen to a person if you just let it, and the way in which we can change others. This is a story of its time (published 102 years ago!) and yet also feels very feminist. Iโve seen readers bemoan the fact men get involved in the story at all, and that the ending is quite twee, but I think this is a feminist story, at heart. The men are changed by the women, by their decisions and actions. Women are front and centre of this story. One I will now return to each April.
