Retrospective Takes: Deep Cover. 1992 Veteran character actor Bill Duke (pictured in the eighth photo) is also an extremely talented and atmospheric film maker. His third movie behind the camera, Deep Cover, is one of the best crime films of the 1990's. Laurence (Larry at the time) Fishburne stars as Russell Stevens. Stevens is a dedicated police officer from a tragic background in Cleveland, Ohio who has dedicated his life to being a good cop. He recieves an offer from DEQ agent Gerry Cason (Charles Martin Smith) to go undercover in Los Angeles. His mission is to befriend and partner with David Jason (Jeff Goldblum), a high rolling cocaine trafficker, in an attempt to bust a major cartel operation. The further he goes, the harder the lines are blurred. A perfect mix of style and substance, Deep Cover delivers thrills and an emotional impact. It owes a lot to the crime films of classic 1940's film noir and is photographed in a neon drenched fever dream of a thriller. All the performances are excellent. Oh yeah, the soundtrack pulsates with the sound of Dr. Dre, fresh out of his contract with Ruthless Records and starting on his new venture.....a little record label called Death Row Records and the debut of a new rapper named.....Snoop Doggy Dogg.
