Gave this another rewatch for it’s 25th anniversary and man it only continues to age like a fine wine. Not only is it an A+ high school movie, but it acts as an extremely sharp political satire and a biting deconstruction into suburban malaise. It smartly chooses to stay away from modern references and keeps things as timeless as possible - 90s stars in a very 70s looking flick. #AlexanderPayne script is up there with the best of the 90s and it never fails to make me laugh out loud at certain parts - the editing especially leads to some really great punchlines. #MatthewBroderick is great (there’s definately some connection between this and Ferris Bueller but I’m too lazy to properly look into it - I just know this wasn’t an accident), #ReeseWitherspoon is at her BEST (sorry Elle Woods), and this contains the only properly great use of #ChrisKlein (what a loveable idiot he is in this). Starting this film with a Coldplay needle drop was an act of terrorism. Ending the film with an Arcade Fire needle drop made up for it. Linklater is hit or miss for me. I adore the Before films, but beyond that, nothing I’ve seen has really wowed me (save for Bernie, which was just so charming). But the simplicity of this film does wonders for itself. And that’s not to mention its central (for lack of a better word) gimmick, which is just a magic trick in and of itself; being able to see these characters grow and evolve over time is remarkable, and it makes the film as special as it is.
