‘Conflicted’ is what Immaculate is. It’s partly an entertaining horror comedy, and partly an almost unwatchable dumpster fire. The nunnery-set story sees a young woman enter an Italian convent where everything isn’t as it seems. There are a few effective jump scares, some gruesome body horror and a slightly creepy atmosphere during the first two acts. At its core, it’s about women’s basic human rights, a fitting theme for religious horror. The screenplay is as predictable as they come, saved to a degree by an absolutely bonkers twist that’s so looney it’s sure to have you giggling. Unfortunately, once all of the cards are on the table, Immaculate turns into a tedious grind for its final act. While we do appreciate that the film avoids all of your typical, done-to-death possession tropes, it doesn’t have enough to say about its chosen themes. Imagine an unintentional B-movie parody of Midsommar, and that’s Immaculate. The cinematography is flat and forgettable, particularly when contrasted to a similar horror film released earlier this spring, The First Omen, to which Immaculate pales in comparison in every possible sense. The script leaves so much to be desired, starting with a failure to flesh out the protagonist’s backstory or even her basic personality. A similarly undercooked antagonist is severely lacking in motivation. The acting wobbles. Initially, Sydney Sweeney is good, subtle, but once things really start going she overacts so badly that a comparison to Nic Cage in Wicker Man isn’t unfounded. Are you supposed to laugh during the climax? The comedy of the final few minutes doesn’t seem intentional, but it’s impossible not to chuckle. Sydney Sweeney needs to start finding better movies soon. Immaculate is pure trash, and it doesn’t hide it. For a good while, this is sufficient enough to keep you entertained. It’s not frightening, though, and that’s a systemic problem in a horror film. It’s essentially a 90-minute buildup to a punchline, which would be fine if the joke ended there. And so Immaculate is left stranded somewhere between disastrous disappointment and decent, disposable entertainment, leaning far more towards disaster.

Saw "the First Omen"6.5/10 BILL NIGHY makes an appearance, love that!The look was incredible! Shot just like a 70s movie. I think it was shot on film, i hope but these days, you cant tell. Really grainy, symmetrical shots, perfectly framed and really well 1 shot long takes. Cinematography A+ 👏 👏 👏 for Aaron Morton! Not many themes to speak on just belief in yourself, belief in something higher than yourself and trying to do good in the face of evil. It was directed and acted very well. Especially the main actress, Nell Tiger Free, she was fantastic! Having said all this, we do hate having to give a bad review to a movie but it just wasnt that good! We repect the process and how hard it is to get and make a movie but putting on our "critic" hat, it just didnt fully work. Hopefully it'll satisfy people who loved the original Omens or get people to watch the original Omens! We repect the hell out of it for NOT using jump scares!!! It did bring up some dread but then it would be too slow and badly paced! It also had some great ideas that just faded away that they definitely could of expanded on more that would of been really interesting. The big reveal DID save it a bit as well as the ending was pretty, pretty wicked but it made no rational sense. Saw "Civil War" 8.5/10 Such an original movie! Beautifully shot yet devastatingly shown! So happy to see this at the top of the box office! Movie is presented through the eyes of 4 journalist, whom all 4 actors are incredible in this! Its never told what the war is fought over which is the point. Leaves that up to your own interpretation. Its an exstistential threat of how war could be fought on American land! It Shows the brutality and pointlessness of war, the innoncent lives lost, how people can become radicalized monsters fighting for their side and how war just leaves terror and devastation in its wake! Also, The power of true, on the ground journalism. The way its shot, Its presented unlike any "war" movie you'll ever see because its through the eyes of the journalist cameras. Cinematography A+! Sound design, in IMAX especially was fantastic. Score/sountrack (Silver Apples, Suicide, De La Soul, Sturgill Simpson) was a vibe setter. Nice and eclectic. Its definitely more of a meditative thinker film than a non stop action packed one, like the trailer made it out to be! Which this is directed by Alex Garland and i recommed watching all hes written ("28 Days Later", "Sunshine") and directed ("Ex Machina", "Annihilation) because he's definitely got an original cinematic language! Night Shift (2023) Gwen Taylor, played by Phoebe Tonkin, begins her first shift at this quaint motel cozily named “The All Tucked Inn,” where one might pass by on a midnight dreary seeking moments of shut eye. Soon, she realizes there is more than meets the eye in this small sized psychological horror. With rats and cockroaches scattering, bright neon lights, and a big empty, dirty pool, the film is oozing with creepy motel details. The production design, lighting effects, and cinematography are some of the best parts of the film, bolstering an otherwise poorly written screenplay. Much of the dialogue feels forced and the foreshadowing is too on the nose. Phoebe’s performance feels very one note throughout, and maybe that’s a director’s choice considering the narrative, but it would have been nice to see more variety of emotion. Her subtle, monotone deliveries help her supporting actors stand out. Lamorne Morris, playing Teddy, craftily carries the comedic relief, while Madison Hu portrays a woman with mysterious intrigue. As a whole, the film is a slow burn storyline punctuated with supernatural plot points and at other times, some humor. Though it mostly remains tonally consistent, there are moments that feel out of character. The music is nothing special, but does elicit an uneasy atmosphere and even though there are some noticeable editing inconsistencies, it’s nothing that’s detrimental to the storytelling. While the film strives to distinguish a familiar narrative, the writing and direction ultimately holds it back. All the elements boil down to a pretty average film that is honestly hit or miss. If you can sit back and simply enjoy the visuals, you might like this! Ida Lupino was often called the poor man’s Bette Davis due to Warner Brothers giving her the roles Davis was too busy to take. Yet the English born Lupino, whose family acting roots dated back hundreds of years, would grow from ingenue to star to writer to director to producer. She became pioneer who ignored industry norms by demanding jobs usually reserved for only men. In the 1940s, while at the height of her career, when she was starring in The Hard Way, High Sierra, They Drive by Night, and The Man I Love, Lupino was developing scripts. In 1950, she directed Not Wanted, and, while continuing to act, plunged into producing. One of the owners of Four Star Productions, she would be a major force in developing television programming. For the next thirty years she would direct scores of episodes of such iconic series as 77 Sunset Strip, The Untouchables, The Twilight Zone, Bewitched, and The Virginian.
