Il y a quelques années, j'avais eu la chance de rencontrer Ed Prynn, celui qui s'autoproclamait "Druide de Cornouailles" Né en 1936, ancien conducteur d’engin dans une carrière de granit, un accident de travail l’a laissé borgne et invalide alors qu’il venait seulement de dépasser la trentaine. Loin de se laisser abattre, Ed Prynn a alors poursuivi un rêve né d’une expérience mystique dans sa jeunesse, celui de recréer dans son jardin les anciens monolithes qu’il avait pu admirer plus jeune dans cette région d’Angleterre qui en regorge. Rapidement, lui et sa compagne, aidés par des amis, ont préféré créer des monolithes uniques auxquels ils donnèrent une signification symbolique. Commencé en 1982, le jardin d’Ed se compose de 19 rochers pesant entre 2 et 18 tonnes chacun. Celui-ci s'est éteint, dans sa demeure pas comme les autres, le 3 décembre 2021, à l'âge de 85 ans. Sa maison a depuis été mise en vente et je suis curieux de savoir si elle dégage toujours la même magie. Freshwater Bay in the 1860s and 1870s was quite simply the place to be. Julia Margaret Camerons' home, Dimbola Lodge (@dimbolamuseum) had became the hub for a crowd of bohemian artists, writers and poets, including her neighbours the Poet Laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson who lived a walk away at @farringfordiow and her artistic mentor, the sculptor and painter G.F. Watts. Other famous Victorians who lived nearby or made visits to Dimbola or Farringford, Tennyson’s home, include the Pre-Raphaelite painter William Holman Hunt, the actress Ellen Terry and Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland. It is rumoured that Carroll based many of his characters on people he knew, including Cameron, and the Tennysons. It is also said that Carroll wandered past Julia Margaret Cameron one day when she was painting some flowers in her garden for a photo shoot and that Hallam and Lionel, Tennysons sons were inspiration for TweedleDee and TweedleDum. Truth is, who really knows. 'Julia Margaret Cameron (1815 – 1879) was one of the most important early photographers and is now recognised the world over as a pioneer of photography as art. A woman ahead of her time, she was ambitious and freethinking when most Victorian women were passive and demure. She took on the challenges of handling large cameras and dangerous chemicals at a time when photography was known as ‘The Black Art’. Ignoring conventions, she experimented with composition and focus. Today she is credited with creating the first photographic close-up portraits and influencing the subsequent Pictorialism movement with her use of diffused focus. W A L M E R C A S T L E • 🏰 Probably the most picturesque and unique bit of history along my local stretch of coastline. This is Walmer Castle. It was built in 1539 by the order of King Henry VIII as a coastal defence artillery fort, to protect our shores from invasions by the Holy Roman Empire and the French. It’s one of 3 castles the lay adjacent to each other along our shores, the other two being Deal and Sandown Castles. As time moved on, in the 18th century it became the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. Some various prime ministers and prominent politicians were appointed as the Lord Warden including, William Pitt, The Duke of Wellington and Lord Granville. Some of the Lord Wardens since the Second World War have included Winston Churchill and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. That’s enough on history. I’ve been here 2 or 3 times over the past week and this sunrise session the other day seemed to give me the best light. So here’s the shots. I can’t help but think that this stage of spring looks a little bit like Autumn but I’ll certainly be coming back for a summer shoot here too! An oldie, but goldie ✨️ A photograph I took 2 years ago on my old beginner camera when I was just starting to tall in love with photography. I absolutely love this photo though, and it's one of my favourites, as I think (hope) it tells a story of beautiful Staithes, on a gorgeous golden evening with nothing but the seagulls to keep me company. An absolute must visit on the Yorkshire Coast 🌊 My eldest turned 16 yesterday and truthfully I've been an emotional wreck! I think I've just about come to terms with the fact that he will now have the freedom of 2 wheels to transport him to/from his little part time job and college in September. 'West Wight Alpacas was set up by husband and wife team, Neil and Michelle Payne in 2010. What started out as a hobby quickly turned into an active family business and a high quality tourist attraction as well as one of the leading Suri Alpaca and Llama stud farms in the country. We were impressed by Suri alpacas and their friendly inquisitive nature, and also the lovely part Argentine Wooly llamas we have imported from Europe. Everywhere looks better when the sea pinks are out but it's hard to argue the beauty of Kynance all year round. We have enjoyed going in the winter months to be totally alone in this amazing place, that solitude in Kynance is now gone but its still a place to revisit in the warmer months. Freshwater Bay Golf Club has one of the most spectacular courses in the UK. Located on Afton Down and Compton Down above Freshwater Bay with sensational views of the Solent and English Channel, this downland course is 5,725 yards long, par 69 and provides a challenge for golfers of all abilities. The free draining chalk downland means that the course stays in great condition all year round, and provides some of the best winter golf in the south of England. The land, owned by the National Trust, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest as well as being a European Special Area of Conservation and is home to many rare and endangered species of flora and fauna. Yarmouth Gig Rowing Club is based at @yarmouthharbour. Using traditional ‘fixed Seat’ boats such as Gigs and Galleys, coastal rowing is a community sport open to all ages and abilities. Both types of boat rowed by the club are over 30 ft long and can seat either 4 or 6 crew, plus cox and passenger. Working in partnership with the @westwight_sportscentre , members are guided towards fitness and skill levels that allow them to enjoy rowing for competition, fitness and all year round fun. 'Four Isle of Wight photographers have had their work featured in an exhibition celebrating a Finnish UNESCO Biosphere Reserve’s 30th anniversary and connections with Biosphere Reserves like the Isle of Wight all over the world. A cuttlefish from Seaview, taken by local marine photographer Theo Vickers, is now on display in the Korpoström Research Station and Archipelago Centre on the island of Korppoo in Finland, part of the Archipelago Sea Area Biosphere Reserve. It is joined by a White-tailed Sea Eagle being apparently photobombed by a Grey Seal in a lucky capture by Alan Burch, and a sunset view of St Catherine’s Down and coastal cliffs by Martha Henson.' ~ @iwnews 📸 @theovickersmarinewildlife
♡︎ Me excited about fossil hunting, a series. No trip to the Jurassic coast is complete without a spot of fossil hunting! I’d also recently read about an 150 million year old Pliosaur skull that was discovered in the cliff face near Kimmeridge bay in 2023, so I couldn’t resist an explore on the surrounding coves 🦖🐋 I may not have found any dinosaur remains but I did find plenty of ammonite imprints which made me happy! 🐚 ** Fossil hunting that involves digging up or chipping out fossils from the rocks is banned at Kimmeridge for good reason, if you visit please respect the history of this beautiful coastline and just enjoy looking for fossil remains, rather than trying to destroy the landscape by digging them up. 📍 Dorset, UK { Dorset.
