Fringed gentian (Gentianopsis crinita) Nature saving the best for last, seems like a banner year for this biennial there was a few hundred flowering plants at this prairie. I’ve tried for years to get this plant to establish in my yard with little success but it does grow well in flats and can be transplanted to the ground once the first year plant goes dormant. Fall brings purple to the prairie in my favorite family of wildflowers, the Gentians. There are five species locally, all thriving on Citizens for Conservation preserves. First is Bottle (Closed) Gentian, the flowers of which never open and are exclusively pollinated by bumblebees who muscle into the tight blooms. Second are some unusual white Bottle Gentians, a few of which were mixed in with the normal blue and purple ones. These might be a genetic aberrant pigment or perhaps a hybrid with Cream Gentians. Third are Cream Gentians, the only white-flowered Gentians locally. These bloom earlier than the others and are spent where the others are in full bloom now. Fourth are Fringed Gentains. Fifth, Prairie Gentians. As the year’s ever-changing parade of wildflowers nears its finish, the fringed gentian (Gentianopsis crinita) unfurls its elegant blue petals in sunny and damp areas of the park. These dazzling blooms provide end-of-season energy to bumblebees who prize its nectar. They wedge themselves into the flowers and climb down to reach the sweet reward. Afterwards, the flower slowly recloses as it replenishes its nectar—readying itself for another pollinator visit. Later in the afternoon, bumblebees may be spotted resting in a blossom, using it like a road-side motel for the evening. For park visitors, their regal beauty is a cherished sight before winter’s quiet rest. These flowers can be seen across the Great Lakes states, though are scattered and rare throughout their range. The very rare and exquisite Fringed Gentian (Gentianopsis crinita). This plant was grown from seed, not wild harvested. Although it is native to the High Country, it is typically only found in mountain bogs. Being a biennial wildflower, this plant will die after flowering and going to seed. Pollinator interactions reported include bumblebees, and I have seen some small solitary bees feeding on it as well. This is not one of our sale plants, I just wanted to share this for those who haven't seen one before. Gentians also have the ability to open and close their petals depending on its surrounding environment. A gentian can close its petals completely within 6-10 mins if they notice a sudden drop in temperature. In habitats like the Colorado Alpine, this behavior lets the flowers stay dry and protect their valuable pollen and nectar. It's been a while since I've posted or gotten out on the trails consistently, with my moms medical situation going on. It has been great to spend so much time with my family, though I wish it were under better circumstances. I have made stops at places near either my parents house or the hospital throughout the duration of the last couple of weeks and was able to see these gorgeous wildflowers and orchids in the process. There's even an albiflora Slender Gerardia, in there! #plantoftheday is Gentianopsis crinita or fringed gentian! G.crinita is yet again part of the gentian family, Gentianaceae. In the last #plantoftheday post we looked at Bartonia virginica and saw how its floral characteristics align with the typical flower build of genera in Gentianaceae. Bartonia virginica and Gentianopsis crinita have no similarities in size, color and growing location. Just looking at pictures of the two they can seem worlds apart but by taking a closer look at the flowers you can begin to see how closely related they really are. As previously mentioned in the last post, you can begin to characterize plants in Gentianaceae by identifying two features: 4-5 stamens that connect into the flower petal and tubular flowers/closed flowers as a result of petals and or sepals being fused. Oppositely arranged leaves and flowers developing into seed bearing capsules are also common features of plants within the gentian family. These characteristics can be found in both G.crinita and B.virginica. These are the features that are relatively easy to observe when looking closely but there are a few other features you have to take the flower apart to see! Gentianaceae have two sets of female reproductive organs or carpels in a flower and these carpels are fused together. The ovary also has a superior placement, meaning it along with the rest of the reproductive organs are positioned higher than the rest of the flower components on the plant's stem. While these are certainly more technical parts of gentian flowers, they are absolutely fundamental and can be super interesting to see up close. G.crinita typically grows in partially wet full sun locations, only opening its bloom in full sun. It will favor neutral pH soils, most often growing in calcareous sandy areas. The Fringed Gentian 𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘱𝘴𝘪𝘴 𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘢 is one of the rarest plants in Britain, found in only a single site in Buckinghamshire. This tiny jewel was thought to be extinct, having not been seen for nearly a decade, until 5 plants were found last year. It was exciting to see these beautiful little flowers, but being restricted to a few metres of chalk downland makes them so vulnerable that it's hard not to fear for their future.
