I had the honour of creating the farewell flowers for my father in laws funeral yesterday. I have always loved magnolia trees and I see many at the moment in people’s gardens. They seem miraculous with their goblet flowers. Traditions. Weddings are full of traditions. Some of which you might want to honour, and some you can choose to leave behind. I LOVE the fact that weddings can be so personalised, so individual. You can invent your own traditions and make your wedding truly you. So, Buttonholes, who traditionally has them? Who doesn’t need them? Well, it’s sort of down to you - sorry - maybe you wanted a more detailed answer than that! We have pinned buttonholes or corsages onto Best Men, Best Women, Best People, Bride’s Best men, Groom’s people, Wedding attendants, Dads, Stepdads, Ushers, Uncles, Mums, Mum in Laws, Step Mums, Brothers, Sisters, Guards of Honour, Friends and we have also displayed them for Absent Friends, We’ve even pinned them on the occasional Groom 😉 But some Grooms don’t want a buttonhole and that’s their individual choice too. We’ve done no buttonholes for 1 wedding, the most we’ve had was 18 buttonholes and 6 corsages for the same wedding. But if you want to know what tradition says, then important men at the wedding wear a Buttonhole on their left lapel with the flowers pointing up towards the shoulder, and important women wear a corsage on their right with the flowers pointing down. Who is important again is down to you, but traditionally it would be the fathers of the couple, and any attendants such as Best Men or Ushers. Let us know who you think needs a lapel of loveliness, and we will happily create lovely little mini posies & pin them! K & A celebrated their September wedding at the stunning location of Tissington hall. I think they suit this elegant style, it looks just like a scene from Downton Abbey. Agrostemma or corncockle was a new discovery for me last year. I autumn sowed and was so happy that the plants survived the big chill in a small zippy green house. I grew them on outside and I was cutting from late May through to July, really useful for the June gap … my only regret was I didn’t do a 2nd spring sowing . This weekend I’ll be starting off my ranunculus 😍 These tiny, octopus like corms cost me dearly every year but I wouldn’t be without these beautiful blooms for a magnificent spring display 😊 They’re tricky to grow, prone to rotting away and seem to take forever to get going! They come in the most beautiful colours, from white and the palest of pink to a vibrant orange. They’re a cool season flower and actually stop flowering when the temperatures are high. They need protection from the rain and frost so I’ll be growing them in the poly tunnel again this year with maybe a few in pots that I can move in and out depending on the weather. I was scrolling through my photos and realised these beauties hadn’t made it to the grid. Commonly know as snap dragons, antirrhinums come in such a glorious range of colours and varieties that start flowering from as early as May right the way through to July , this year mine are still going strong in August. The only down side is they do suffer from rust , it’s unsightly and once it starts plants need to be pulled up and disposed of. Otherwise they grow along pretty much untroubled by pests. I particularly love the frilly doubles of Madame Butterfly shown here but I have Potomac and Costa varieties on my list for next season. These flowers are technically a short lived perennial so I’ll be sowing their tiny seeds in the next couple of weeks to over winter in an unheated greenhouse . Perfect for mixed bouquets or simply stunning on their own in a vase, they have fabulous vase life of 7-10 days . How could you be without them ?
